Book Description:

What do women want?

Jonathan Templar and his poker buddies can't figure it out. Take Jonathan, for instance. He's been in love with Lissa Castle since they were kids but, geek that he is, she's never seen him as her Mr. Perfect. He has one last shot—their high school reunion. Kyle Long is equally discouraged. The pretty receptionist at his office keeps passing him over for other guys who may be taller but are definitely not superior. And Adam Edwards might be the most successful of Jonathan's friends, but he isn't having any success on the home front. His wife's kicked him out.

When Jonathan stumbles on a romance novel at the Icicle Falls library sale, he knows he's found the love expert he's been seeking—Vanessa Valentine, top-selling romance author. At first his buddies laugh at him for reading romance novels, but soon they, too, realize that these stories are the world's best textbooks on love. Poker night becomes book club night…and when all is read and done, they're going to be the kind of men women want!

My Review

The road to true love is never smooth, regardless of whether your a man or a woman.  Sometimes you fall for the girl next door, who never seems to notice you as anything other than a friend, sometimes you fall for the beautiful receptionist at work, even though she only seems to notice your boss, and sometimes you don't cherish what you have until it throws you out the door.  At least that's what some of the men in Icicle Falls have problems with.  Giving us the viewpoint of love from the male side of the fence, Sheila Roberts gives us the tale of men in need of a guide to love in What She Wants. Blending a small town romance, some light comedy and some sage relationship advice, Ms. Roberts' book grabbed my attention from the first page.

Jonathan Templar, computer geek extraordinaire, is unlucky at love.  In love with Lissa Castle, the "girl who grew up next door",  Jonathan hasn't gone on a date in years.  He's never figured out how to ask Lissa out or even get up the courage to try.  When notices go out about their fifteen year high school reunion - Jonathan decides it's now or never.  Looking for the perfect "method" to romance, he stumbles across the idea of the man he needs to become when he's at the library with his sister.  A romance novel hero.  After all, every woman he seems to know loves to read romance novels and who better to instruct him than Vanessa Valentine, a top selling romance author.  Will Vanessa's books give Jonathan the information he needs to win the woman he's been in love with all of his life?

While Jonathan is the main focus of this particular story, Ms. Roberts also gives us the stories of his "poker" friends, Kyle and Adam.  Kyle has been in love from afar with the receptionist at work, who only seems to have eyes for his direct boss.  A man who's taller, more handsome and a lot better paid.  Meanwhile, Adam, who's married, can't figure out what he's done wrong that's gotten him kicked out of his house.  His wife, who claims she loves him, has thrown him out.  As all three men turn to romance novels for advice, Ms. Roberts puts them through some rather hilarious situations.  While not all of the advice from the books works out, they do learn some interesting things.  Especially the lesson they finally learn from the only happily married guy in their group.

Will Jonathan get a chance to let Lissa know how he really feels?  Will Kyle realize the woman he really loves is not the one sitting at the front desk?  And will Adam learn what it takes to get his wife to let him come home again?  You'll have to read What She Wants to find out.  I enjoyed it and I think you will too.  While this is the third book in a series, it can be read on its own.
