On
Facebook, I have a wonderful group of Vangie’s friends who all congregate with
me to talk about the books and our lives. We occasionally talk about Vangie,
and as I was preparing for this book tour, I asked them if they had any topics
for me to talk about in my guest posts. I borrowed some of their questions to
write about. Here are some of the ones they posted.
* Why
does she have her particular brand of relationship struggles? I mean, there’s
some reason why she fell for the slimy married guy back in NC, and why she’s
dating the guy she’s dating now instead of the guy we’d all rather see her be
with.
Okay,
this question made me laugh. I expected someone to ask this question. J Vangie
is a very complex character, and she hides a lot. Even from me. Let alone from
her friends and family. I’m not sure she’s aware of what her relationship
issues are, and I hesitate to speak for her. But I do think that this was an
honest question, so I want to answer it. You’ll see a lot more about Edward in
the next book, The Larcenous Lava Cake, but I can tell you that Vangie didn’t
know he was married, and they never slept together. However, he was obviously
unavailable, emotionally, and there’s a reason that she tends to be more comfortable
with emotionally unavailable men. Derek (the guy she’s with right now) is the
opposite of Edward in every way, and I think that’s a big part of the reason
why she’s with him.
And,
honestly, Derek asked her. J Malcolm
did not.
But
he has his own issues… J
* What
are Vangie’s favorite sports teams, and why does she cheer for them?
Vangie
is a big sports fan, and she did her Seminary training at Duke, which has long
been her favorite college basketball team. It was nice to spend a few years
being able to go to Cameron Indoor Stadium every weekend in the winter and see
the team play. Other than that, she’s a North Carolina sports fan all the way
down. Hornets, Hurricanes, Panthers… it’s all North Carolina, all the time.
Except when it comes to basketball. She would never cheer for UNC. It’s the one
line she would never cross. There’s a saying in North Carolina, among Duke and
NC State fans. It’s “ABC, Baby. ABC.” It means, “Anybody But Carolina.”
Of
course, her sister went to UNC. It’s what they call a divided household. Dad
went to Duke, Mom went to UNC. Vangie went to Duke, Cilla went to UNC. It’s the
biggest eight miles in college basketball, and she loves it.
In
a related question, someone asked who Vangie would cheer for in the Olympics,
and the answer is, everyone. She loves to cheer for different countries in
different events, depending on what the good story is, for that event.
She
will be religiously watching ALL the curling. J

About the book:
You could
call it the straw that broke the camel’s back but it was more like a Montana
forest timber. Just when Vangie Vale’s life was getting back to normal after a
murder that rocked her little Rocky Mountain tourist town, she found herself in
the middle of another murder... as the chief suspect.
Vangie stood
shocked on the side of the curb as the sheriff stretched yellow crime scene
tape around the front of her new bakery. Wouldn’t this make a lovely headline
in next week’s paper: Local Baker Kills Parishioner With Pudding. Vangie’s road
back to good graces as a part-time pastor was bumpy enough already. This would
be a roadblock. Can't have that.
