Now in MOON RIVER, private investigator, Samantha Moon, is asked to look into a string of bizarre murders, murders that are looking more and more like the handiwork of a bloodthirsty vampire. My Review

Admitting I have a thing for paranormal/fantasy romance, especially those featuring strong female characters, I happily signed up to review J.R. Rain’s Moon River.  Well developed characters, good dialogue and an interesting mystery kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next.  Good world building and a well paced plot, make this a good addition to the paranormal/fantasy genre.

Since turning into a vampire seven years ago, Samantha Moon has steadily been getting adjusted to her new life.  Working as a private investigator, she is able to choose the clients she works with and has an established relationship with the local police.  Called in on to help with a new case, which appears to be the work of an out of control vampire, Samantha becomes immersed in a case which could lead to the end of her immortal life.

Mr. Rain does a really good job developing Samantha’s character.  While I was at a disadvantage by not having read the previous books, I was able to connect with Samantha; though not as deeply as I would have liked to.  Samantha is the kind of heroine I like, even though she has come to terms with no longer being human, she remembers enough about her previous life to appear as human as she can.  Her ties to her previous humanity, because of her children, keep her grounded and stable.  She’s tough, but funny, smart and sassy and someone I would want watching my back.

The secondary characters in the book were also well developed and I especially liked Allison, her best friend, who’s suddenly realized she’s a witch, and I also found Kingsley to be an interesting character.  While Samantha’s children don’t play a huge part in this book – we do get to know a little bit about them and they seem like very interesting characters and they are definitely not your average kids.  I also found the "villains" well written.  They definitely had to be taken down.

Will Samantha survive the new case she’s become involved in? And will she be able to do what she has to do in order to keep her loved ones safe?  You’ll have to read Moon River to find out.  I enjoyed it and plan to read the rest of this series so I can get to know Samantha from the very start.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns
