As a vampire hunter and skinwalker, Jane Yellowrock is public enemy number one in the vampire community- even though she's also the key to their survival.  Now she's about to learn that working for the enemy can be just as dangerous as hunting them.

The Vampire Council of New Orleans has hired Jane to hunt and kill one of their own who has broken sacred ancient rules.  But she quickly realizes that in a community that is thousands of years old, loyalties run deep.

With the help of her witch best friend and local vigilantes, Jane finds herself caught between bitter rivalries- and closer than ever to the secret origin of the entire vampire race.  But in a city of old grudges and dark magic, Jane will have to fight to protect both sides, even if no one will protect her.

My Review:

This is the second book in the Jane Yellowrock series.  I really loved this book.  The heroine is an alpha female who is also deeply caring and loyal.  This book takes place within a week or so of when book one ended.  Her best friend Molly ( a witch) and Molly's children have come to New Orleans for a visit because Molly's husband Evan (a sorcerer) had to go out of the country on business.  Jane is under contract to the Vampire Council to capture/kill a rogue master vampire who is making other vampires outside of the law.  Jane is also still trying to deal with the little bit of insight that she got into her past history in the first book and is also still being pushed by "beast", her shifter nature, to take a mate.

There are 3 strong alpha type men in this story that are all interested in Jane for a romantic liason.  Rick, the undercover cop from the first book, who is no longer undercover and is seriously attracted to Jane and lets her know it.  Then there is George (aka Bruiser) who is the blood servant of the Leo, the Master Vampire of New Orleans.  George is a serious hottie according to the description and "Beast" is seriously attracted to him.  Finally there is the Master Vampire, Leo, himself who is attracted to Jane but in this book is dealing with the loss of his son.  He is in a bad way and can't decide if he is attracted to Jane or wants to kill her.

There is the rougue vampire that Jane has to locate and I certainly didn't see who it was coming, that was a real surprise.  So were some of Jane's weaknesses.  It was nice to see that Jane has as many human issues as the rest of us.  It was also nice to see the scenes where Jane was dealing with the men and how they affected her.

Overall this is an excellent follow up to a great first story and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.  I will say that I was surprised by the choice of boyfriend that Jane made at the end of the book and don't know if the relationship will last but it will be interesting to see what happens in her love life and to see how she uses the additional knowledge about the creation of the first vampire and vampire history.

I highly recommend this book.

My Rating:  5 out of 5 Crowns
