Guest Post -Writing Quirks and Must-Haves by Hadena James

First, I must have background noise - If I’m locked inside my studio, I tend to load up my laptop with either old British Sitcoms (Waiting for God, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and/or Fawlty Towers) or German rock music (Rammstein, Oomph!, and Eisbrecher). The side effect of this is that occasionally I find myself inserting words and phrases that are very British or I start typing in German. Luckily, my editor is good at catching these changes… If I’m at home, I hand the remote to my SO and tell him to turn it on whatever he wants to watch. If he ends up turning on a documentary regarding something historical, writing usually has to wait until it ends. The saving point is that he isn’t as interested in history as me or at least, not the same areas.

Second, I must have soda – I drink twice as much soda when I’m writing. If my brain isn’t wired on caffeine, it seems to block the creativity.

Third, I must be using my own laptop – For some reason, I can’t seem to get inspired when I am sitting at another computer… Even my home computer. At one point, my laptop bit the dust and I used a replacement for a month while I picked out a new one. I wrote absolutely nothing during that time, not even on my home computer. The moment I had my new laptop (and it had been officially made mine by loading it up with British TV and German rock music), the writing flowed again.

As for quirks, there are many. I can only write around certain people and their moods can influence my writing. My SO is very serious and when I write around him, my writing is more serious. My best friend however brings out my sense of humor and I use her to “beta-read/content edit” my stuff because she can suggest things that I can turn into hilarious situations. However, I’ve never been able to write with a group of people around nor in a public place such as a coffee shop. Setting seems to have a huge impact on my creativity and people as well as places can alter my writing significantly.

Book Description:

Nadine Daniels’ life is a disaster. The security company that she owns is being sued, her mother is coming to visit for a week, and some unpleasant realities about her “charity” work are about to surface. She thought this was as bad as it could get, but she was wrong—dead wrong.

Someone believes she knows a secret – a secret worth killing for. With assassins tracking her every move, Nadine wishes the only thing she had to worry about was her mother pestering her to settle down with her suspected live-in boyfriend, Zeke, but she can’t think about the future when the present might end with her death.

Excerpt:

His frustration was evident. While my situation still sucked, at least it was looking better. If I could just stay alive long enough, I would be saved.

“That would probably be the most interesting thing you’ve said all day.” He sat back down, facing me. I would have preferred him up, pacing the room, clawing at the walls, but I’d take what I could get.

“Actually, it’s not that interesting. I was attacked by a tiger. He got a good chunk of meat from my leg, I had physical therapy for two years and a couple of really nasty scars, but otherwise, it was just like any other day.” Even the attack hadn’t been that extraordinary. He was hungry, I looked like lunch. No harm, no foul. I never hold anything against large predators, they’re just doing what instinct tells them.

“Fine, what would make you loosen your tongue?”

“I don’t know, maybe if you knew one of my phobias and used that against me. Unfortunately, I’m not afraid of pain or death, so those are not effective. If you had asked me this earlier, we wouldn’t have had to ruin my favorite shirt.”

“And I guess you’re just going to tell me what you’re afraid of?” He rubbed a hand down his face. It was a gesture I was used to, people did it all the time to me.

“No, but if you had done a little research before you kidnapped me, it would have helped. For example, my fears are pretty easy to discover. Just ask someone. Hell, even the press knows what I’m afraid of, I’m sure it’s been printed someplace. And you would have known that I hire mercs, S.E.A.L.S and Rangers.”

My Review

The first books I remember borrowing from the library as a child were mystery books, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys were long time favorites before I moved on to books by Mary Stewart and others.  I especially love mystery books that include romance and comedic subplots.  Hadena James The Life & Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels is one such book.  With a likable heroine, fun secondary characters, a mystery, a good touch of humor and a subtle romance, Ms. James' book has everything I need.

Suffering from post- vacation blues, Nadine Daniels, the owner of a private security company, has a lot on her plate.  Her business is thriving, they've recently relocated some mob family members and they've received a lot of publicity - unfortunately not all of it is good.  As if life isn't busy enough, Nadine finds herself with a new roommate, an employee who becomes more than she bargained for, and an unexpected visit from her mother.  When threats are made against her life, Nadine begins to wonder if she'll make it to the end of the week.

Ms. James did a good job developing Nadine's character and introducing us to all of the people in her life.  With just the right amount of witty and occasionally snarky dialogue, Nadine is just like any modern woman who's got a little too much on her plate.  With a large cast of supporting characters, who all make significant contributions to the story's plot, you could get a little overwhelmed but I enjoyed the challenge.

Will Nadine discover who's trying to cut her life short before it's too late?  And will her new romance be all she's been hoping for?  You'll have to read The Life & Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels to find out.  I enjoyed it and have already purchased  The Dysfunctional Valentine: A Nadine Daniels’ Novella. I can't wait to see what happens next in Nadine's life.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns

Book Description:

Japheth the Tainted is on the hunt for a mysterious demon vampire. But meeting her face-to-face might disarm his warrior spirit—and spark an unquenchable passion with apocalyptic consequences.

As a fallen angel, Japheth is determined to make his way back to heaven by staying pure and slaying hellspawn. With a new scourge of vampires unleashed by a blood-drinking demon, the Prince of Thirst, there’s plenty to be done. But Japheth is after one vampire in particular—the one they call the Angel Slayer.

Rose Harley never wanted to be a vampire, but the Prince of Thirst can turn even the kindest soul into a soldier of hell. Feeling abandoned by God, she stalks the West Village taking revenge on his angels—until she meets her match.

When Japheth and Rose encounter each other, the battle is fierce and charged with desire. But when they discover a common enemy—the Prince of Thirst himself—they form a dangerous alliance that could either cost them their eternal lives, or spark a love more powerful than heaven or hell.

Excerpt  :

“Looking for someone, angel?”

That honey-blood voice quivered Japheth’s feathers taut.

She grinned, mocking. Leaning against the redbrick wall beneath a rusted fire escape, steeped in magical shadow and hot vampire stink.

He stared, dumb. Tall for a girl, only a head shorter than he. Long legs, encased in blue jeans and black army boots. Her short black t-shirt stretched over full breasts, flashing that tempting skin above a silver belt buckle. Her bare arms shone, muscular but womanly. Sexy dimples in her cheeks, perfectly shaped for cupping in his palms.

The bloody feathers of slain angels, gold and white and red, stuck through the thick dark braid she tossed over her shoulder. A few wisps escaped to play around her face in the summer-night breeze. He wanted to trace their path with his fingertips, cheekbone to chin to cherry-ripe lips . . .

“Matter of fact, I am,” he said tightly. “Your sniveling master. Fluvium, is it? Prince of Thirst? Tell me where he is and I might kill you quickly.”

She laughed, fangs glinting. Sharp, lethal like a tigress’s. “You’ve come to kill Fluvium? Good luck with that.” She lolled on one foot, eyeing him speculatively, sizing up her prey. “Japheth, right? Of the Tainted Host? Cute name, for a hamster.”

Sweet lord, his name in her mouth sounded . . . dirty. He swallowed, rough. “How’d you know that?”

“I know my enemy.” She licked ripe lips.

“Yeah?” he said coldly. “Well, I don’t want to know you, whore. I don’t care what your name is—”

“Rose Harley,” she cut in swiftly, with a wicked grin. “Whoops. Too late. Sorry about that. You like it anonymous, don’t you? So you can pretend they’re not people when you damn them to eternal torment?”

His grip spasmed around his sword. Sweet heaven, he wanted to stab her. Fill her with burning steel. Twist it, thrust it deeper, make her moan . . . “You don’t need me to damn you. You made your choice. Tell me where Fluvium’s hiding, and I’ll put you out of your misery.”

She laughed again, and strolled towards him, hands in pockets. “You sure could learn a thing or two from demons about making deals. Like, I dunno. Offering me something I actually want?”

Her knife still lay sheathed, in her thigh holster. Unafraid, was she? Grudging admiration tingled under his skin, and he crackled it off. Nothing admirable about a demon minion’s attitude. “So you do know where he’s hiding, then.”

“And what if I do?” She draped her sultry gaze over his silver-clad chest, his bare arms, his glowing blue sword . . . Her scrutiny flushed treacherous heat right to the top of his head. He could smell her, blood and corruption, yes, but underneath, the hot salty musk of female flesh . . .

Surely, she was his nemesis. Sent to tempt him into falling. Well, he wouldn’t give in. Not when he was so close to redemption.

My Review

Redemption, the second book in The Seven Signs series by Erica Hayes, picks up the tale of the "Tainted" host shortly after the events that took place in Revelation.  Continuing her extensive world building, Ms. Hayes gives us two somewhat doomed would be lovers, whose path to peace is fraught with guilt, blood and violence.  While I'm not sure I'd call them likable characters, they do none the less grab your attention and garner your sympathy,.

Once a warrior angel, Japheth, is now one of the "Tainted".  Unsure about exactly what he did to earn Archangel Michael's wrath, Japheth has spent the last 14 centuries killing demons and denying himself any kind of glory or joy in an effort to earn redemption.  Regardless of how many demons he kills, it never seems to be enough to get Michael off his back; at least until now.

Given the order to kill the demon vampire known as the "Angel Slayer" and her master, a demon prince known as Fluvium, Japheth has been promised re-entry into heaven upon the successful completion of his task by Michael.  Japheth never thought he'd fall in love with the enemy.

An up and coming star on Broadway, Rose Harley becomes a demon vampire after a night with Fluvium, a demon prince. Tricked into surrendering her soul  and hurting the only person she loves, Rose is angry at both heaven and hell for her situation.  Taking her anger out on angels keeps her out of hell where the soul of the person she betrayed angrily waits for her.

Trying to stay one step ahead of her master, Rose roams the night and streets of Babylon alone and in despair.  At least until she runs across one of the tainted angels, Japheth.  Promised more time on earth if she can turn one of the "Tainted" to the dark side, Rose plans to use seduction as a way of taking down the "Tainted" she couldn't kill

As Rose and Japheth meet and circle around each other, the third and fourth vials of the Apocalypse take center stage.  Ms. Hayes continues her world building by giving us glimpses into an Earth full of despair, destruction and little to no hope.  We get to know Rose and Japheth as the people they were, through flashes of  their past, and the people they've become.

While both are desperate to stay out of hell, they can't deny their attraction and are reluctant to carry out their assignments to destroy each other.  Both are sympathetic characters and easy to understand.  While desperate to gain re-entry into heaven, Japheth is still disdainful of humans (who he refers to as monkeys), though he can't deny his desire for Rose.  Meanwhile Rose finds herself falling deeper and deeper in love with a man she's supposed to corrupt.

The secondary characters continue to play an important part in this series, especially Archangel Michael, whose hatred of pretty much everyone and everything seems to know no bounds.  We do meet the Archangel Gabriel, who's not as clueless as Michael thinks.  Gabriel has his own doubts about what's going to happen at the end, and also seems to suffer from a spirit of despair.

The demons also play an important role, especially Fluvium, a theatrically inclined demon who is annoying as all get out, and his boss Azeroth.  Azeroth is running things in Hell until Satan is freed from his prison.  All four of these powerful beings have one thing in common, their disdain for humans and their growing thirst for power.  In fact one wonders what will happen to mankind as no one seems to care for the humans.

Will Rose be successful in her attempts to seduce Japheth to the dark side?  Will Japheth choose to stay on Earth with Rose when he's given a chance to get back into the heavenly host?  You'll have to read Redemption to find out.  I want to warn the reader that this is a series you'll want to read in order as each book builds on the previous installment.

Book Description:

When Maeve McKenna renounces her witch powers and accepts a low-key nurse practitioner position at a Virginia retirement community, the last thing she expects is a suicide her first day on the job.

As the town's sexy sheriff, Paul Sutton, starts looking into the tragic death of his father's friend, Maeve can't help but get involved--with both the case and him. Their informal investigation unveils an old journal that connects the ruins of a nearby asylum and long-forgotten cemetery with the shiny new retirement community's memory unit--and Maeve's Alzheimer's patients.

Maeve senses a sinister presence in the old asylum, calling to the patients, but in order to stop it from killing again, she must first conquer some demons of her own and reclaim the magic she's denied herself.

Excerpt:

She imagined the thoughts that must be running through his head. She had to tell him everything now. If she didn’t, he would be dead in the next few days. He needed protection.

She stood up. “Want a glass of wine? This is going to be a long conversation.”

“Since I was just nearly killed, how about some whisky?” He fell back against the sofa. Liadan put her paws on his chest and licked his face.

Maeve went into the kitchen, trying to figure out how she’d gotten her powers back. It dawned on her that the morning after the Gems had arrived, her tea was not in its regular spot on the counter. She’d assumed her mother had only been cleaning, but apparently she’d also switched the contents of the jar to non-spelled tea.

She reached into the cabinet for the tea container and looked at it, shaking her head, then laughed. Never had she been so glad for the Gems meddling in her life. She threw it in the trash and returned to the living room with glasses, red wine, and a small bottle of George Dickel missing a few sips. “Here you go.”

He took the whiskey and tossed back a shot, then poured another glass, which he held between his hands. “So, what is it that tried to kill me and my father today?”

“You’re not going to believe me at first, but if you’ll hear me out, I think I have a pretty good case.”

He gestured with one hand for her to begin.

“Everything I’ve seen and heard, all the information in the journal, points to the presence of an evil spirit. I believe it’s the spirit of Dr. Colton Carterage.”

Paul stared at her for several moments. “You’re serious.”

“Completely.” She poured herself a glass of red wine from the freshly opened bottle, and sat in the chair across from him. A tingle of energy floated in the air. She recognized a witch cat at work. She tried desperately not to laugh at Liadan working her little cat magic on him, licking his face, nuzzling his chest, pushing her paws against his arm. He didn’t know what was happening, but darling LiLi was removing the mists of doubt from Paul’s eyes.

Maeve explained about patients in the dementia unit seeing ghosts of people described in the book. She told him about the white deer and why the limb had fallen. When she came to the part she dreaded most, she looked at LiLi and the cat complied. She curled up in his lap, purring, increasing the intensity of her witchy magic to ease his believing.

“There’s one more thing you need to know. My mother, my aunts…and me…we’re witches.”

Book Description:

Bodies have a canny way of finding Samantha Jean Haggert—the first, the dead body of her mama; the second, a naked man in the middle of the Arizona desert. For Sam, dealing with one dead body in her lifetime is more than unfair. Two is downright cruel.

Seven years after running from West Virginia, Sam's now a young woman of nineteen, trying to put the pieces of her life together with the help of her family—Jacob, Boone, and Laura. But the naked man in the desert spirals her world out of control, resurrecting past hurts and revealing old secrets. It also pits against one another the two men who vie for her heart: Carson, her friend, her first kiss, and the one man who knows everything about her past and loves her despite it; and Turner, the stranger who knows nothing, but who excites and frustrates her all at once.

When bad choices made as a child lead to more bad choices as a young adult, Sam finds herself at a crossroads, forced to face her demons head-on if she plans to have any future at all—with Carson, with Turner, or with anyone. But fixing the wrongs of the past takes time, and learning to forgive one's self is damn near impossible.

Visit old friends in this harrowing sequel to Desert Rice, in which award-winning author Angela Scott brings back the characters so many readers have loved.

Excerpt:

I catapulted myself at Carson the moment he walked in the door—a wild, crazy woman. My fists pummeled his chest. He just stood there and accepted my onslaught of violence.

"You shouldn't have left me alone with her! You said you'd only be gone an hour!"

"Sam, I tried to hurry—"

I pushed him and then pushed him again. "You should have taken her with you!"

He dropped his armload of groceries on the floor and the broken eggs seeped through the brown paper bag. He took hold of me and shook me violently by the shoulders, as if that would snap me out of my insanity, but it only infuriated me further.

"Let go of me!"

"Not until you calm down!"

I struggled to free myself from his grasp, but Carson pinned me to the wall and held me there.

"Get your hands off me!" But he wouldn't release me.

"Knock it off, Sam! Settle down."

"Settle down! You left me here with her! You said she would sleep, but she didn't. She wouldn't stop crying. I didn't know what to do!"

"Maybe if you held her more and faked some interest in your own baby, then maybe you would!"

He released his hands from me as though I were poisonous, shook his head, and knelt to pick up the spilled groceries. Distaste and disappointment coated his face. He didn't like me any better than I liked myself.

"Hannah deserves better than this," he mumbled, something we both agreed on.

I lowered myself to the floor in a heap and wrapped my arms around my legs. "I'm sorry." Tears fell down my face. "I didn't know what to do. She just wouldn't stop crying. I'm sorry!"

His hands froze midway in their pursuit to clean up the mess at his feet, and he looked at me, really looked at me. "Where's the baby, Sam?"

Author Bio:

I hear voices. Tiny fictional people sit on my shoulders and whisper their stories in my ear. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. I’m not crazy. I’m an author. For the most part, I write contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, I found myself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West—and loving it. My zombies don’t sparkle, and they definitely don’t cuddle. At least, I wouldn’t suggest it.

I live on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. I graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of my love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn’t require math. I can’t spell, and grammar is my arch nemesis. But they gave me the degree, and there are no take backs.

As a child, I never sucked on a pacifier; I chewed on a pencil. I’ve been writing that long. It has only been the past few years that I’ve pursued it professionally, forged relationships with other like-minded individuals, and determined to make a career out of it.

You can subscribe and follow me on my website, where I blog obsessively about my writing process and post updates on my current works. I’m also on Twitter and Facebook, but be forewarned, I tweet and post more than a normal person.
