 About the Author

Michelle Beber has certifications as an Angel Intuitive and Angel Oracle Card Reader from renowned "angel lady," Doreen Virtue, as well as certifications as a Spiritual Teacher and Archangel Life Coach from Doreen's son, Charles Virtue.

Always grateful for the spiritual guidance she has received, Michelle looks forward to sharing the knowledge she has gained to inspire others, especially children. Michelle is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

I don’t normally review too many children’s books so I’ll just try to go over my general thoughts of the book, the graphics/art work and the appropriate age group.

First I have to say that I really like the art work/graphics used in this book.  The colors are bold, bright and the images are well drawn.  The children represent multiple races/ethnicity, which I found refreshing as our world is not made up of one race but multiple races.  I think in print form this would probably be an excellent book – I don’t think the graphics will come through on a regular Kindle or Nook but they should look good on a tablet, Kindle Fire or Nook Color.

I think the age group is probably mid to late grade school, probably about a 3rd to 5th or 6th grader at the eldest because of the simplicity of the prose and the complexity of the message.  While I have no problem with Ms. Beber’s message overall, I do think that Angels are God’s creations and used to assist us, there are some Christians who might object to the idea of praying directly to an angel instead of praying to God to have the angels/guardian’s assist us, or who limit what types of tasks angels are allowed to intervene.  This of course is a theological issue that a parent will have to decide for themselves and discuss with their child.

Overall I think this would be an entertaining book for a young child and the graphics are superb.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns

A mysterious stranger helps a teenage boy called Ethan rescue his mentor, an elderly father-figure, from drowning when their canoe capsizes in a flooding river.

A star athlete, Ethan later gets involved in unsafe sex, which leads to drugs, and gets him blackballed by jealous and gossiping team-mates. The boy is going down, and at times hates himself for it and for hurting his mom who is a caring, loving, and beautiful woman.

After another disastrous episode, where Ethan might have died, the river-stranger turns up again to confront him about his life choices.

However, even after rehab, the boy’s condition is marked by a yo-yo attitude which causes massive emotional heartache for his mom.

The river-stranger, after sharing his own amazing history, suggests taking the fight to another level which draws on the resources of God.

This begins a new and fascinating sequence of events, including a tornado, which get Ethan’s attention.

The book is a captivating story, packed with adventure in the desert Southwest and in the rivers and lakes of the Midwest USA. But it is also a goldmine of spiritual wisdom for teenagers. The mystery that permeates the story is compelling, and the thrilling ending may call for a tissue or two.

Booth’s Sister
Jane Singer
Pub: July 15, 2008

Her brothers were the matinee idols of the 1850's theater world; her father was a famous Shakespearean; she wanted to be an actress but the social rules of the era prevented it; Asia Booth, sister of John Wilkes Booth, endured a peculiar and often sad childhood with her flamboyant father, flighty mother and restricted ambitions. Her devotion to brother Johnnie led her to aid his anti-Union sentiments during the Civil War, and she was suspected of conspiracy in the Lincoln assassination. Historian Jane Singer imagines the dreamlike misery and mistakes of a little-known player in the Lincoln tragedy.

I received this as a freebie back in March of 2010.  As someone who loves to read historical fiction based on true people and events, I was intrigued by the book. Unfortunately it got buried on the Kindle and I still haven't managed to read it but I recently watched a movie on the Wilkes-Booth family and I am excited to find that I have this on my Kindle and look forward to trying to squeeze it into my reading.

Crimson City
Liz Maverick
Pub:  December 26, 2011

Once, this was the City of Angels. The angels are no longer in charge. From the extravagant appetites of the vampire world above, to the gritty defiance of the werewolves below, the specter of darkness lives around every corner, the hope of paradise in every heart. All walk freely with humans in a tentative peace, but to live in Los Angeles is to balance on the edge of a knife. One woman knows better than most that death lurks here in nights of bliss or hails of UV bullets. She’s about to be tested, to taste true thirst. She’s about to regain the power she’s long been denied. And Fleur Dumont is about to meet the one man who may understand her: a tormented protector who’s lost his way and all he loved.
I bought this in January of 2012 because I was on a paranormal reading binge and the 2nd book in the series is written by Marjorie M. Liu - an author whose books I was just getting into and I had heard good things about this book.
Sadly I never got around to reading this but I do still want to read it.

Have you read either of these books?  If so, what did you think?

Don't forget to list your Kindle Kandy and link up!

Virtual Tour for The Obsidian Temple by Kelly Grant

Grandmothers by Kelly Grant

People usually want to know if my characters are based on real life people. I don’t do so intentionally – but characters are often influenced by my role models. In the Obsidian Temple, we finally meet the most influential person in Sulis and Kadar’s life – their desert priestess grandmother.

No one knew exactly how old Grandmother Hasifel was. Sulis wasn’t even certain of her first name—everyone just called her Grandmother Hasifel (or “your grandmother” if they were talking to the twins). Her spare, tall frame was still upright as a stick, but Sulis had seen Grandmother twist herself into impossible shapes while in moving meditation. Her skin was a burnished copper, her high cheekbones speckled with age spots and wrinkles. She radiated a restless energy, as though there was a raging river just barely contained under a thin layer of humanity. Her salt-and-pepper hair was oiled and pulled back in a tight bun now, but Sulis had seen it wild in an aura when Grandmother danced with the moon.

Grandmother Hasifel combines the strengths of both of my own Grandmothers. My paternal Grandmother was a slight, delicate-looking lady. She baked cookies, made us sweets and had a spine of steel. She was born in West Virginia and learned to care for herself and her father after her mother died. She held her own family together through poverty and strife. When she was in her late 80s she was still delivering meals and sermon tapes to the “poor shut-ins” who were usually about a decade younger than her. Like Sulis’s grandmother she was devout in her faith and did not waiver fromthe path of truth. She taught me the strength of loyalty, the enduring bonds of family and the value of hard work.

“How you find your path forward from pain and disappointment is a choice, not an inevitability. Living life without hesitation after failure is a choice. Loving after betrayal is a choice. Forgiving, even forgiving yourself, is a choice. It’s not an easy choice; no life changes are. A choice, nonetheless. Choose or be what you fear.”

Those words, spoken to Sulis by Grandmother Hasifel, could be words my maternal grandmother used. She was outspoken in her beliefs, and she did not hesitate to let her family know if they had veered off course. She loved her family and friends fiercely, but with clear eyes. I learned from her the value of speaking up and allowing my voice to be heard. I inherited her stubbornness and ability to stand up for what is right, even if it isn’t popular.

Writing the relationship between Sulis and her grandmother in The Obsidian Temple was a joy to me.  Creating thetension of a wise, but stubborn grandmother having to accept her headstrong granddaughter as an individual and an adult was a tribute to my own grandmothers. Both of my grandmothers are gone now, but they live on in the wisdom they shared and the love the spread to everyone in their lives.
