About the translator

Anne Trager loves France so much she has lived there for 27 years and just can’t seem to leave. What keeps her there is a uniquely French mix of pleasure seeking and creativity. Well, that and the wine. In 2011, she woke up one morning and said, “I just can’t stand it anymore. There are way too many good books being written in France not reaching a broader audience.” That’s when she founded Le French Book to translate some of those books into English. The company’s motto is “If we love it, we translate it,” and Anne loves crime fiction, mysteries and detective novels.

Mini Interview with Andy Marx

Me:  Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

Andy:  Mark Zuckerberg. I feel as though technology has become the new art form in our society, so right now, it feels like he’s some great artist. Plus, I wish I had gotten a computer science degree.

Me:  What did you do on your last birthday?

Andy:  Went surfing in Hawaii. I’ve finally gotten to the point where the less said about my birthday, the better. Riding big waves in Hawaii seemed like the right thing to do.

Me:  Do you have any tattoos?  Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?

Andy:  I don’t have any tattoos and don’t quite get the whole tattoo thing, although, I must admit, I like women with tattoos. I think it shows a certain level of bad judgment and impulsiveness, two qualities I find attractive in women.

Me:  What are you working on right now?

Andy:  Re-writing another novel I recently finished. As someone once said, “Novels aren’t written, they’re re-written.”

About the book:

America has never seen anything to match the innovation, energy, romance, and excitement of the 20th Century. And the embodiment of all this is Eve Solomon, a young woman who embraces the vitality of the times with a fervor. Determined to make a name for herself in the fledgling music business of 1908, she ultimately becomes wildly successful. But the same steely determination that takes her to the heights of the entertainment world cannot bring her the one thing she wants more than anything: the love of her life, Alex Getz, a struggling Vaudeville comic who becomes one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. As their careers and lives intersect across the years, there is a price to pay—a royalty for true love that can never be measured.

EXCERPT

The ring was dazzling.

Square cut, about two carats, Eve guessed, as she looked down at the diamond. Set in ornate Victorian silver and resting perfectly on a black velvet cushion, she could picture it on her finger…even imagine the looks of envy on her friends’ faces as she waved it in front of them. There was no doubt she loved the ring, but not the man who had given it to her.

When Ben had called her earlier in the day and announced he had a surprise, Eve never suspected he planned to propose. Smiling at him, while a myriad of conflicting thoughts ran through her mind, she could only conjure one clear idea. What am I going to tell him?

“Say something,” Ben said, breaking her reverie. “I’ve never known you to be at a loss for words before.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“Try it on. I want to see if it fits.”

Slipping the ring on her finger, Eve thought about how many times she had imagined this moment. But up until two months ago, before she finally decided to stop waiting for Alex, she had always imagined him, not Ben, doing the proposing.

“I guess I’m a little surprised,” Eve said.

“I’m doing pretty well,” he said. “I moved Ma and my sisters into a bigger apartment. I’ve got a nice place. I figured it was time to start thinking about a family. And I couldn’t think of anybody I’d rather start a family with than you.”

Release Day Blitz & Giveaway for An Almost Perfect Christmas by Donna Fasano

An Almost Perfect Christmas
by Donna Fasano
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 1, 2014

Aaron Chase is desperate to give his young daughter a perfect holiday, and Pediatric Nurse Christy Cooper agrees to help him. Then the impish eight-year-old talks the adults into a make-believe wedding. Can the magic of Christmas transform the pretend vows into true love?

A fan of holiday stories regardless of the time of year, I really looked forward to reading An Almost Perfect Christmas by Donna Fasano.  A beautiful, yet somewhat bittersweet tale of compassion, love and grief, Ms. Fasano’s story made me laugh, cry and remember to be thankful for my healthy family.  Good character development, plenty of emotional angst, and the perfect pace kept me turning the pages.   If you want a holiday romance with just a touch of spicy heat, then An Almost Perfect Christmas is one you’ve got to try.

Ms. Fasano does a wonderful job developing all of the characters in this story from Christy, a pediatric nurse who understands pain and loss on a personal level, to Aaron Chase and his precious little girl Izzy, who’s wish is for a Christmas celebration at their beach house.  The secondary characters, from Bridget, one of Christy’s co-workers, to the shop owners at the beach add just enough color and compassion to help the story move along.  While Christy and Aaron are at different stages in the grief cycle, they are perfect for each other because of what they have and are going to experience.

Will Christy’s act of kindness to a sick little girl help her deal with her own issues?  Will Christy and Aaron realize what Izzy really wants for Christmas?  You’ll have to read An Almost Perfect Christmas to find out, it brought me to tears and that’s really saying something since I try not to cry over books!

My Rating:  5 out of 5 Crowns

Virtual Book Tour & Giveaway for The Face Transplant by R. Arundel

Character Creation by R. Arundel

This is the art and essence of writing.  At it's most basic writing novels is storytelling. In fact grammar and literary skill may not be as important as we like to believe.  There are many novels that have become blockbuster successes and have received universal condemnation from critics prove this. Similarly there are novels with great critical acclaim and no book sales. If you tell a good story that people relate to your book will be successful, end of story.

The characters chosen and how they illustrate the story will ensure the success or failure of a story.  Each storyteller will create characters in very different ways.  I spend a lot of time thinking about each character and making detailed notes on what they wear, level of education, relationships, and inner motivations. Only when I thoroughly understand a character do I put the character in the story.

If you can create characters that engage the reader you are a long way towards writing a very successful story.  Whether it is a screenplay or novel, characters are essential.  Focus a great deal of time making sure you understand your characters.  I like to meticulously note what my characters would wear, their education, foods they eat and other physical characteristics.  Then I like to note in detail what significant events drive them in life.  Quite often these events are never mentioned in the story but they shape the character.

I like to list the relationships that the character has in the story in diagrammatic form with lines and arrows.  All these relationships are detailed and a map drawn with the characters.  Then some time is spent seeing if I have enough characters to do all the things I want to do in the story.  Do I have the right characters?  Should some be eliminated because they are serving no real purpose or some other character can do this better?

Think of your characters in either one of two groups. Some characters are created to be true to life these can more easily be created by looking at documentaries or meeting people who are similar to your character.  The second type of character is a character that is from some other world. An imaginary character or a character that is human but you have made the decision to make the character behave in a way that may not be typical for someone like that.  The second type of character requires a great deal of creative energy since they are springing from only your mind and you have no guidelines.  The benefit of this type of character is that the reader will give you more leeway and suspend belief since this is a purely 'created' character.

Excerpt

(Matthew visiting a patient in hospital)

Adam, “Is it true you murdered those people?”

“What do you think?”

“I know you didn’t do it, I’m sorry I asked you that. I don’t know if it’s worth it anymore. I’m gonna get a piece of plastic for my face.”

Matthew, “I’m really sorry they suspended the transplant program.”

Adam, “Dr. Elliot Stone took your place. He recommended the face prosthesis.”

Matthew, "He's a fine surgeon, you're in good hands." Adam, “They just made him University President.”

Matthew, “Really.”

Adam, "I guess it doesn't matter anyway. I'm finished. It's over."

Matthew, “Far from it man.”

Adam, “Family. Country. Honor. That was everything. They just seem like words now. Empty. Hollow. What was it all for. What?”

Matthew, “Family. Country. Honor. It’s what this country was founded on Adam. It’s what makes this country great. It’s everything. All our laws. All our freedoms. Every person who lives in this country owes you. You have paid a big price. We. Owe. You. We know it. If we don’t show our gratitude, it’s because we sometimes forget. Not because we don’t remember. So know this Adam Landt. You are valued. You are valued my friend. You are everything that is good, everything that is right.”

“There’s nothing left for me. Aly’s gone. Kids are gone. I’m all alone. There’s nothing.”

“Let me tell you something very few know.”

I open the door slowly, not sure what my reaction should be at seeing him here. It probably shouldn’t be the tsunami that forms in the pit of my stomach. It whirls and churns and then explodes, taking over everything as a wave of nausea flows through my body. The tidal wave subsides, leaving only the back-and-forth of small, choppy waves that my stomach must somehow navigate. I know that I shouldn’t be experiencing any fluttering, but yet it’s there.

Maybe it is just a nervous reaction to the fact that a policeman is here to see me. That would be understandable, warranted even. When the flutters travel lower, I have to admit to myself that they’re for reasons other than his occupation.

He’s dressed in charcoal slacks and a bright white dress shirt. No tie today. He didn’t shave this morning. The dark stubble on his cheeks looks somehow sexier than a clean shave. That definitely is not the case for us girls. The only giveaway that he isn’t about to pose on some hot-guy calendar are the dark shadows under his eyes. He looks fresh-from-the-shower delicious, and I’m still dressed in the same sweatpants and t-shirt that he saw me in last night, only now they’re wrinkled from sleep.

Well, they’re wrinkled from tossing and turning. It’s not like I actually slept. I realize that he’s still standing on the porch studying me, and neither of us has said a word.

“I thought that we weren’t supposed to talk without a lawyer present.” Did those words just come out of my mouth? I grimace internally, maybe externally too. Way to go Phoebe. Give him a reason to leave.

“That’s true. We aren’t allowed to talk about the case without a lawyer present.” Detective Matthews pauses and looks down at his clasped hands. “But I’m not here to talk about the case.” His beautiful brown eyes meet mine again. “I really just wanted to make sure that you are okay. You went through so much last night, and well…I’ve been worried about you.”

I feel the corners of my mouth break into a smile. He’s been worried about me. Is it normal for cops to check up on people? Maybe. Probably. I hope not. He smiles back. I place a hand on my stomach to calm the trembling tsunami that is now wreaking havoc on my insides.

About Tamra Lassiter

I live outside Washington, D.C. with my wonderfully supportive husband and two daughters, one of which is approaching her teenage years. Help us all! If that isn’t enough, we have a Great Dane and an English Bulldog to keep us on our toes. It’s crazy around here and I love every minute of it!

Writing is my third career. I didn't set out to be a writer, it was just meant to be. My Mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech prepared me well for my first career as an Engineer/Program Manager.

My second career was in Human Resources. Long story, but I figured it out. I believe the best start for a writing career is to be a reader first and I’ve been an avid reader my whole life. I've loved to read ever since I picked up my first Nancy Drew mystery in the fourth grade. Now I love reading just about everything, but I don’t read sad books and I don’t watch sad movies either for that matter, no matter how many awards they’ve won. Life’s too short and who needs all that strife to bring us down?

Many of my words have been penned late into the evening, which explains why I’ve never viewed whatever television show you recommend to me. I would, however, love to hear your recommendations for a great read!
