#Book Beginnings & #Friday 56 - #47

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

The Dark Horse (Walt Longmire, Book 5) by Craig Johnson

October 27, 11:00a.m.

It was the third week of a high plains October, and an unseasonably extended summer had baked the color from the landscape and had turned the rusted girders of the old bridge a thinned-out, tired brown.
My Thoughts:  I started listening to the audio books because I’m a fan of the series that was on TV.  I still have to watch Season 4 on Netflix and get ready for Season 5.  I wanted to see how different the books were from the show and the books are about 100 times better.  In fact they are so much better I want to pack up my stuff and move to where these stories take place to see if I can find my own “Walt”.  As for the beginning, it pretty much tells the story of what summers and early fall can be like in the Midwest – baked – and completely toasted…..lol

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice on every Friday.

To Play along here are the Rules:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your post below.
*Don’t forget to add your post URL (not your blog url) at Freda’s Voice.
*It's that simple.

My 56 (Also from The Dark Horse – About 56% into Audio version of book):

The treatment table had fallen over and Mary Barsad, still attached to an ECG monitor, was lying on the floor beside a series of small glass doored cabinets.  Vic was holding both her hands against the woman’s throat as the pulse of the blood from her carotid artery pushed with Mary’s pulse through my deputy’s fingers in a one and a half foot arc.

My Thoughts:  Things always seem to happen when Walt gets involved in a case and either he, his deputies or the prisoner being held, and in some cases all of the above, end up in the local hospital.  There is always something going on – even when there’s no physical activity taking place on the page – something is going on either emotionally or mentally….lol.

So what do you think?  Does this sound like a book/series you would enjoy reading? Don't forget to link up at Freda's Voice

About The Dark Horse by Craig Johnson

Walt Longmire goes undercover to save a woman in an unfriendly place

Interweaving classic noir sensibilities and humor with contemporary themes of social justice, Craig Johnson's popular Walt Longmire mysteries transport readers to the sparse and rugged landscape of Wyoming. In The Dark Horse, the sheriff investigates when his instincts tell him something isn't right about a prisoner accused of killing her husband.

Wade Barsad, a man with a dubious past, locked his wife's horses in their barn and burned the animals alive. In return, Mary shot Wade in the head six times-or so the story goes. Walt doesn't believe Mary's confession, and he's determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt soon discovers other people who might have wanted Wade dead, including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not for honesty.

The Dark Horse is sure to build on the success of Another Man's Moccasins as Sheriff Longmire unpins his star and ventures into a town without pity to save a woman without hope.

Don't forget to post your meme's and link up at both host locations.

Have a great Friday!

  1. I keep meaning to start this series -- both the books AND the show -- but haven't been able to decide which to do first!

  2. I LOVE audiobooks, and this one sounds great. I'm always put off sharing them on these links though, because it takes me ages to find quotes and then to remember them and jot them down correctly. Then I wonder if my spelling (especially of names) is accurate. So I don't. But I should. Thank you.

Here's You will know me by Megan Abbott, which I'll be reading this weekend.

  6. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons but then I stopped watching for some reason. Maybe I should read some of the books and pick up the show again.
