About the book:

1871 - Born to privilege and duty in Virginia, Olivia Gentry comes of age as women begin to find their social and political independence. She has been raised and educated to carry on the Gentry family’s successful horse breeding stables with her brothers at Paradise, their family home. Having been deceived in love as a young woman and unsure of her instincts, she is wary to commit to a marriage, but she cannot deny her long-buried feelings for a family friend.

Jim Somerset has been in love with Olivia Gentry from the moment she gazed up at him as a young girl. A farrier by trade like his father before him, he and his business’s future are inexorably entwined with the Gentry family. He has watched her be courted by statesmen, and considers her and her goals out of the reach of a common workman, like himself. But he is fearful that he will never rid Olivia from his mind and from his heart. Has the moment come for him to reveal his passions for her? Find out in the third instalment of the Gentrys of Paradise.

Excerpt

Olivia understood herself enough to know that she had lost her confidence, and even though others might see her as wealthy and educated and fortunate, which she was, she was still fragile and unsure of how her future would unfold. Any man she married or fixed on would be a central part of that future. Would define in society’s eyes whether her hopes and dreams were fulfilled, whether her personal happiness and the draw of competency and ambition she had for herself would cross paths.

She supposed that she should end her self-imposed exile. What good did it do her to hide in her room? She’d answered some of her own questions in the last four months. She did wish to marry. She wanted children of her own. She wanted a companion, a man, all for herself, not meant to be shared with others. She wanted to experience intimacy, and although she could do that outside the bounds of marriage, she couldn’t imagine it. How could one achieve the intimacy necessary to complete the act with a person that one had no relationship with, either from personal choice or law?

The final question, of course, was whether she would achieve any of those goals if love wasn’t evident. Her mother and father hadn’t been in love when they married. Yet they had grown to love each other and built a successful life together. Olivia believed that she could do as many other women had done before. Marry with purpose. Marry to achieve goals. Marry, not for love, but for compatibility and future hopes.

One of my uncles had already tried to use violence to get me out of the picture in order to hurry the sale of the property. So the thought that one of Mabel’s greedy children had tossed the rock through the window in an attempt to scare me into packing my bags and going home shouldn’t have surprised me.

The joke was on them, though. I didn’t have a home to go back to. My father’s side of the family made sure I’d never feel at home in any of the Penn mansions. My half sister Tina was the only member of my family who treated me with kindness.

If not for her, Bixby Lewis wouldn’t be standing in my shop right now.

“If this rock was aimed at you, we need to report it,” I said to him. “Even if it’s just a threat from an overzealous fan, we have to keep you safe.”

“Penn’s right. I hate to say it, but we need to tell Hank Byrd,” Bertie agreed.

“Not him.” Just the thought of talking with Camellia Beach’s police chief made me groan. According to Byrd, crime hadn’t existed in his quaint beach town until I’d moved in.

While he didn’t suspect me of breaking any laws, he blamed me for bringing criminals into town with me. The arrival of Bixby Lewis and his crazy stalker fan would only add fuel to that ridiculous theory of his.

Even so, Bertie was right. I needed to make that call.

“No!” Bixby grabbed my wrist and pulled the cell phone out of my hand before I had the chance to punch in the numbers. “Don’t tell anyone. The publicity will only cause more crazies to crawl out of their hidey holes to make trouble. Trust me on this one. I deal with this almost every day.”

“Son, someone tosses rocks through your window on a daily basis? That would burn my biscuits,” Bertie drawled in her lovely, deep Southern voice.

I introduced Bixby to Bertie and explained how he was a singing star of mega proportions.

“I know who he is,” Bertie fussed. “I might be old, but there’s nothing wrong with my hearing. I listen to the radio. I love your ‘Honey Got a Hold on Me’ tune. Listen to it while folding my laundry.” She tossed back her head and belted out the refrain, which included a description of the singer going back to his girlfriend’s house and making the walls tremble. It sounded quite naughty coming from someone well over seventy years old.

Bixby’s cheeks turned beet red as he politely thanked her for enjoying his work.

I giggled. I often giggled inappropriately when I got nervous.

He smiled kindly in my direction before saying, “Don’t worry about the window. I’ll replace it. In the meantime, I’d rather focus on celebrating great beach music than wasting time talking with the police.”

“But—” I started to protest.

“I’m fine, Penn.” He put his hand on my shoulder in the same way Bertie had earlier to

Mystery author Dorothy St. James was born in New York but raised in South Carolina. She makes her home on an artsy island community in South Carolina with her husband, a neurotic dog, and fluffy cat. Though writing has always been a passion for her, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology and a graduate degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning. She put her educational experience to use, having worked in all branches and all levels of government including local, regional, state, and federal. She even spent time during college working for a non-profit environmental watchdog organization.

Switching from government service and community planning to fiction writing wasn’t as big of a change as some might think. Her government work was all about the stories of the people and the places where they live. As an urban planner, Dorothy loved telling the stories of the people she met. And from that, her desire to tell the tales that were so alive in her heart grew until she could not ignore it any longer. In 2001, she took a leap of faith and pursued her dream of writing fiction full-time.

Known for the White House Gardener Mystery series, Dorothy is going back to her roots and setting a mystery series in a Southern beach town much like the one she’s called home for the past 20 years. The Southern Chocolate Shop Mysteries combine her love of fine chocolates, quirky Southern charm, with a dash of danger.

Excerpt

They headed for the road, away from the castle tumbling toward them, hoping the mountain itself would hold until they could get to the bottom. But what awaited them at the bottom was a sheet of ice, and it too could crack and send them down into the frigid deep.

She had never driven a sleigh nor a team of dogs before. The pure instinct of survival now taught her. As they rounded the rough road, more slippery now as they gathered speed, their path looked grim. Giant chunks of the castle came descending down, hitting the mountain’s jagged sides and causing avalanches of huge falling debris. The children screamed, and Nadia wanted to do the same and take refuge closer in toward the mountain, but there was nothing that would shelter them. She kept focused on the dogs in front of her, thinking only of getting to the bottom. Cascading from above came another rock, and the children held onto the sleighs, terrified. Nadia tried to turn the sleigh toward the mountain to avoid it. They swerved dangerously around the edge of the road.

Something also descended from the sky. It was a black figure, but Nadia could not even think about another potential threat as the second sleigh bore down upon them, rushing behind her. They swerved back to a straight course, barely missing the rolling boulder which crashed onto the road.

Virtual Tour & #Giveaway for Six Feet Under by Tonya Kappes

Good Luck!

From ideas to the page. . . by Tonya Kappes

I write by the seat of my pants. Not literally, but really—I don’t plot before I sit down, but I do think a lot.

Writing is definitely a job that is solitary. It’s just me and my made up world all day long. And just like in a regular job, whether it be a desk job, teacher, or stay at home mom, I have to make the commitment every single day to show up at my job—bring my fictitious world out of my head and on the page.

Since I write murder, it’s a little different than a novel in a different genre. I have to know the ending and the whodunit and the why before I even type a word on the page. This is when I scour crime scene interviews, reasons people are murdered, motives, news stories and zany ways to kill people.

SIX FEET UNDER is the fourth novel in my latest cozy paranormal mystery, Kenni Lowry Mystery Series, and I knew there had to be a hook besides the grandfather is a ghost. We’d already visited that in the past books and I have to keep it fresh.

I tape a big sheet of white paper on the wall in my office and I make bullet points of the what if’s with the answers. I’m leaving the answers out here because I don’t want to give away any of the fun details of the novel. You are going to have to buy and read the book for all the fun!

*What if the town sheriff’s family member got in trouble? Oh…what if it’s her crazy mama?
*What is unique about my heroine? What if she had to remove herself as sheriff just on this case because it’s her mama that’s the number one suspect? What if she acts like she steps down, but really investigates on her own?
*What is something funny that the mama does to put her in a position to publically threaten someone?
*What if she won some contest and it’s national…oh…on TV?

This game goes on and on. I talk to myself and put the quirkiest answers next to the question. It may or may not make it into the book, but my ideas start to flow and the plot begins to take place.

This is when I sit down and begin to write the first draft or the “bones” of the novel. It takes me about one month, sitting butt in chair, and eight hour days to get it finished. After this draft is complete, I go back through the draft and add in all the little quirky or funny parts since I inject humor into the story. This is how I put the “meat on the bones.” The story deepens. My characters deepen and come to life. The dialogue tags take shape and the story begins to form into a solid novel.

This process takes me two – three weeks. After that, I will print out the novel and read it out loud, taking me another week. Here I begin to change around scenes or add more storyline or details.

This is the last before I send it off to my editor for the first round of edits. This is a back and forth process until it’s ready for my beta readers. With the feedback, I complete the novel for one last round of edits before it’s sent out into the world for readers.

Jane didn’t know whether to sob or throw up. The man was making an understatement when he’d said that today had been a bad day for her. Mistakes happened. She knew that, and she was far from perfect, no matter how much she tried to be. But today? She couldn’t remember ever having a meltdown on the monumental scale this day had become. The urge to cry made her blink as she pushed back the tears. She had zero intention of making herself look even more unprofessional than she already had today. Jane swallowed the ball of tears lodged in her throat.

“I’m not sure what to say except I’m sorry, which is sounding far too repetitive,” she whispered.

“Accidents happen. It can be fixed.”

The matter-of-fact response created a large crack in the fragile shell of control she’d encased herself in. The man was being kind, and that wasn’t helping her keep it together. She’d come into Chandler Enterprises this morning expecting Lincoln Chandler to be an ass. Instead, he was turning out to be a nice guy. Never in her life had she been so eager to see a day disappear into oblivion.

Unwilling to speak for fear of becoming a blubbering idiot, Jane concentrated on getting him to his appointment. As if understanding her need to drive in silence, he didn’t speak until she took the exit off of the interstate. Quietly, he directed her to their destination off of route sixty. A large navigator was parked on the side of the gravel road Jane turned onto several moments later. She parked in front of the realtor’s car, and shut off the engine. Hands still on the steering wheel, Jane shot a quick look at the man beside her.

“Do you need me to go with you?”

“It’s not necessary, but the fresh air will wake you up. You look like you’re about to fall asleep at the wheel.” His words sent images of a horrific car wreck flooding through her head, and Jane nodded.

“Fresh air is definitely a good idea.”

Without waiting for a response, Jane opened her car door and stepped into a sizeable patch of thick mud. Staring down at her shoe embedded in the mud, Jane sat there dumbstruck. The absurdity of it all had her wavering between laughter and tears. Lincoln had already left the car, and she heard him utter an oath beneath his breath as he squatted next to her foot.

“Hold on, Cinderella.”

A warm hand cupped the back of her calf as he eased her foot out of her shoe. There was something intimate about the action, and the air left her lungs as electricity streaked up her leg. It spiraled through her with a strength of an out-of-control wildfire until her thundering heartbeat was ringing loudly in her ears. His hand still on the back of her leg, Lincoln cradled her foot in his hand and gently urged her to swing her leg back into the car. With a small tug Lincoln pulled the ruined shoe from the mud. What had been a sensible, serviceable pump would have to be tossed. She’d never be able to get the mud out of the black suede material.

“You haven’t pissed off a gypsy recently, have you?” Lincoln said wryly as he lifted up the shoe to examine it. “I’m beginning to think you’re cursed.”

“I have a pair of tennis shoes in the back. I’ll just—”

“Nope, you’re staying here. Turn on the stereo, roll down the windows, lean back and close your eyes. I shouldn’t be too long.”

Lincoln’s expression dared her to argue with him, but she was more than happy to follow his instructions. He shut her car door then opened the rear door to place the mud-soaked shoe in the floor board of the back seat. Hands braced on the roof of the car, he stared down at her for a moment.

“Your eyes aren’t closed.” Despite the lazy, seductive note in his voice, it was still a command.

He arched an arrogant eyebrow at her, and Jane obediently closed her eyes and leaned her head back against the headrest. The scent of honeysuckle brushed across her senses, and something like the kiss of a butterfly caressed her cheek.

Virtual Tour & #Giveaway for The Dream Waters Series by Erin A.Jensen

Jensen.  I will be spotlighting Dream World, the second book in the series at this stop.  Please leave a comment or question for Erin to let her know you stopped by.  You may enter her tour wide giveaway, where one randomly chosen commenter will be awarded a $50 Amazon/BN GC, by filling out the Rafflecopter form below.  You may follow all of the stops on the tour by clicking on the banner above.  The more stops you visit, the better your odds of winning.  Good Luck!

INTERVIEW WITH ERIN A. JENSEN

What would we find under your bed?

Honestly?  A big plastic tote full of gift bags, tissue paper and wrapping paper, a scale and a large family of dust bunnies.  Something has to give in order to fit writing time in between being a mom and a pharmacist.  Unfortunately, it’s usually the housework.

What was the scariest moment of your life?

When my younger son was in preschool he got so sick with a virus that he stopped eating and drinking and had to be hospitalized.  He ran a high fever, had trouble breathing and kept vomiting.  They did all sorts of tests and couldn’t figure out exactly what he had.  I didn’t leave his hospital room for three days, and I couldn’t sleep until he finally turned the corner and started getting better.

Do you listen to music while writing?  If so, what?

I didn’t when I first started writing.  Back then, I had to have absolute quiet to get in the zone.  Now, I always listen to music while writing.  I have different songs for different characters and different moods to set the tone of the chapter.  I’ll usually listen to one song on repeat that fits the chapter I’m writing at the moment.

What is something you’d like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

I’d love to finish the Dream Waters Series.  I’m twenty-one chapters into writing Book four of the series, but it’s a little too soon to tell if the series will end with the fourth book.  I’ll have to play that by ear.  There are loose ends that need wrapping up, and there are certain things that I plan to have happen.  If it takes five books to do that, I’m alright with that.  I don’t want anything to feel rushed.

How long did it take you to write Dream Waters?

The first book in the series took about three years to finish.  It was my debut novel, and I spent a lot of time rewriting.  There’s definitely a learning curve to writing novels.  Dream World (Book Two of The Dream Waters Series) and Dream Sight (Book Three) both took about a year to write.

EXCERPT

It was exactly the sort of evening that I relished slipping into. No moon, no stars, just the pitch black of the eternal night sky and the air that sweltered thick and hot enough to rob the breath from your lungs. I sat down on a boulder beside the seemingly bottomless pool of Water and watched the Water cascade into it from the rock high above. Dark and powerful, the Water fell without a sound. In fact, not a single sound emanated from the forest. Nothing dared make a sound in my presence. I sank into the darkness, merged with it, became it. Then I looked to the top of the canyon a short distance from the Waterfall and knowing black eyes blinked in the darkness, vowing to take my place as soon as I stepped away.

I turned as a creature noiselessly emerged from the forest. Dressed in a heavy black cloak, beads and potion flasks and the teeth of various beasts strung around his neck and waist, he walked upright like a man. But beneath his cloak, the creature sauntered toward me with the bestial grace of a predator. His skull and facial bones were the bones of a man, but no flesh covered them, just pure white bone gleaming in the darkness. A wiry tuft of black hair grew from the top of his skull and eyes darker than the starless sky searched for me through fleshless sockets.

Though he couldn’t see me, he stopped just inches from my feet. “How are you, my old friend?”

I stood and let the darkness slip away from me. “That depends on whether you can help us.”

The corners of his mouth lifted into a disconcerting smile. “Still the same ray of sunshine, I see. I’m well, too. And my journey was uneventful. Thank you for asking.”

I took a step toward him, and he instinctually took two steps back. “I’d lose that smile if I were you. And save the cleverness for your potions. No one here is in the mood for jokes.”

He shook his bony head. “I’ve missed you too, Darkness. You always were the life of the party.”

“That’s right. In fact, I have my own suspect list.” Shoot. Why did I say that out loud?

“You do, do you? Are you a private detective, Ms. Freemont?” He stepped closer.

“No. But…” She inched back, stopping when her heel twisted.

“That is the correct answer. No, you are not. You don’t know what you are doing, and you need to stick to doing”—he appraised her—“whatever it is that you do. Leave the detective work to the professionals.”

Was he judging her by the heels she wore? She should never have let Kandi convince her the dress needed heels instead of ballet flats. She bristled at his appraisal. Well, she’d show him what she could do.

“Fine! I’ll just figure out the suspect list on my own.”

“Ms. Freemont, do you know that you can be arrested for interfering in a murder investigation?”

“I’m not interfering.”

“Good. Let’s keep it that way.” He tipped his hat, “Ms. Freemont, Sam.” He strode toward the pub.

Anne sighed in frustration. That man is incorrigible.
