Book
Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Every Friday we
share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along
with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or
anything else the opener inspires.
My
Book Beginning:
Blood
Stained (Lucy Guardino FBI Thriller, Book 2) by C.J. Lyons
An accountant from Lawrence, Kansas has a wife who is constantly cold. Summer or winter, she wears long sleeves and wraps her neck in scarves. Secretly he wondered if she was still self-conscious about the scars left by a car accident that almost killed her right after they first met in college.
My Thoughts: Kind of a boring beginning – makes me wonder
what her scars look like if she’s obsessed with covering them up to the point
of wearing long sleeved clothing during the summer in Kansas – which is usually
pretty hot.

My
56 (Also from Blood Stained by C.J. Lyons) at about 56% of Kindle Version:
“What was his name?” Jenna asked, her voice with a hint of a quiver.“Who? Oh, Leroy Lamont. That’s the one you nailed. For the next few weeks, maybe even a month, our crime rate will be cut in half thanks to you, Agent Galloway.”
My Thoughts: Still doesn’t really tell us a lot – other than
the crime rate must be pretty low if one perpetrator cuts the crime rate in
almost half. I read and enjoyed the
first book in this series and so I naturally moved to the 2nd book. I’m about 25% through the book but it’s
moving slowly for me and I haven’t really re-connected with the returning
characters or the new characters as well as I had hoped so far. Will continue reading though.
So what do
you think? Is this a book you would pick
up based on the two teasers?

About
Blood Stained (Lucy Guardino FBI Thriller, Book 2) by C.J. Lyons
Just your average Pittsburgh soccer mom, baking
brownies and carrying a loaded forty-caliber Glock…
Until recently Supervisory Special Agent Lucy Guardino was a shining star in the FBI’s roster. But after killing a man and disobeying orders, Lucy’s been sidelined, chained to her desk. When a mysterious letter arrives hinting that, thanks to Lucy, the wrong man was blamed for a string of serial rapes, kidnappings, and killings four years ago, Lucy jumps at the chance to re-open the case–despite orders to leave well enough alone.
Her unofficial investigation takes her back to the small town that thrust her into the spotlight four years ago when she saved the killer’s last victims–before the killer took his own life and the life of one final victim, a mother who left a ten year old son and loving husband behind. What Lucy doesn’t know is that what happened four years ago was all a lie, fueled by sacrifice and betrayal, designed to shield the real killer.
With the lives of her family, a group of innocent children, and the future of one desperate boy at risk, Lucy races to stop an innocent from killing and a killer from butchering more innocents.

This isn't a book I would normally pick up, but it does look like it has the potential to be a good thriller. Thanks for mentioning it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI tend to wear light long sleeves in the summer if I will be outside a lot even if it is really warm to just help protect my skin so I can relate to that opening a little bit.
ReplyDeleteA way to get a crime rate cut in half that sounds interesting. I want to know more.
This is just my genre. It sounds good. I'll have to look for the first book in the series. My pick this week is Stalking Ground by Margaret Mizushima - newly released mystery. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI'd keep reading. And I like that cover too.
