Book Beginnings & Friday 56 - #23

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader . Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

Mutilated Dreams (Dreams & Reality, Book 10) by Hadena James

The wine was warm with a musky taste.  Valerie McGregor finished the glass and poured another, much smaller amount in it.  From her balcony she could see the French Quarter.

My Thoughts:  Not an uncommon even in the Big Easy – someone drinking some wine as they look out their balcony viewJ

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda’s Voice on every Friday.

To Play along here are the Rules:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your post below.
*Don’t forget to add your post URL (not your blog url) at Freda’s Voice.
*It's that simple.

My 56 (Also from Mutilated Dreams by Hadena James) :

I think mostly I was tired of dealing with weird cases.  Why mutilate a person but not kill them? Where’s the fun in that? And what’s the trophy for, if the victim is still alive? I understood serial killers a lot better than most serial killers.

My Thoughts:  Aislinn always makes me laugh, the way she looks at things is always interesting and different.  Her issues make this series so much better than a run of the mill book that uses gritty, gruesome crimes for the “horror” or “squeamish” factor.

So what do you think? I’ve already finished this because I just couldn’t put it down, I’ll be posting my review over the weekend if I can get some other reviews I need to write up done.

About Mutilated Dreams by Hadena James

Tourists and natives trolling bars and the scenic places that make up the French Quarter are being hunted. A mutilator intent on gathering trophies made up of swatches of skin laden with tattoos and scars is the hunter. The victims, left drugged but alive, are unable to help the police with a description of the perpetrator. With no clues and a serial criminal at large, the local police have no choice but to turn to the Serial Crimes Tracking Unit.

The Serial Crimes Tracking Unit, better known as SCTU, is used to dealing with dead bodies, so they are unsure their hunting skills will be useful. While the perpetrator might fit a profile, the living are of little help. After all, they don’t even remember being attacked. Dealing with the living, especially those who have been victimized has never been a strong point of Aislinn Cain’s. As Aislinn and her team go to work at solving this case, they find themselves in a race against the clock. It is only a matter of time before their serial mutilator escalates into a serial killer.

Don't forget to post your meme's and link up at both host locations.

Have a great Friday!

  2. I would love nothing more than to finish this Friday on a balcony with a glass of wine. That's the perfect evening right there. I've always been fascinated by serial killers as well, but I don't think I could do this kind of job! Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great next week!

  4. Thanks for using my newest release for this! I've never opened one of my books to a random spot and just examined that section. I love the 56 thing. That was a fun passage to write and showed that Aislinn understood killing more than leaving people alive.

  5. I can't get past the cover--too graphic and disturbing for me.

  12. Wow...Hadena does great with the horror. I read 'Elysium Dreams' which was set in Alaska and the murderer there skinned his/her victims alive. It /still/ kind of gives me the willies!
