About the book:
When the Richmond police offer an exclusive in exchange for
help with a case, nothing—not even a costume party—stops crime reporter
Nichelle Clarke from making Manolo tracks to the crime scene. The hunt leads
her to a televangelist’s compound in the Virginia countryside where the
Reverend may be more interested in fat stacks of cash than he is saving wayward
souls.
With two sexy guys tangled up in Nichelle’s story—and in
her heart—work and love are on a crash course for disaster. Pressure pours in
from every corner, including a faceless new competitor that means the deadline
is always five minutes ago. As secrets threaten and the truth becomes her
lifeline, Nichelle must unmask the killer and nail down the story before she’s
snared in the carefully-constructed web.

A grisly murder, a church that might be a cult and the mafia all play a part in Devil in the Deadline, the fourth book in A Headlines in Heels Mystery series by LynDee Walker. Continuing to develop this series, Ms. Walker takes us on a journey through Richmond as the characters try solving a murder involving homeless youth. While a part of a series, this book can be enjoyed on its own.An experienced reporter, Nichelle Clarke is not surprised to be called to a crime scene while dressed for a party. A gruesome scene filled with lots of blood and the body of a young homeless woman. Offered an exclusive by Richmond Police Department Spokesman Aaron White, Nichelle agrees to interview some homeless witnesses for the police. He thinks she’ll have a better chance of getting them to talk because the homeless don’t always trust the police. What begins as an investigation into the death of one woman soon becomes more complicated when Nichelle’s personal life and her work end up in a tangle and discovering the truth could cost Nichelle her life.Ms. Walker does a good job continuing to develop Nichelle’s character; smart, ambitious and determined to get the scoop first, she’s also got good ethics when it comes to her job and sincerely cares for others. While her professional life is fairly under control, Nichelle’s love life is a lot more complicated. Involved with two very different men, she’s having a hard time making a choice. Especially since one is an ATF agent and the other is involved with the mob. While she’s got plenty of angst on the romantic front, Nichelle also has family issues she’s been ignoring for some time, which she’ll have to deal with because of a possible connection to the case she’s investigating. The secondary characters are well developed and I enjoyed getting to see Nichelle interact with her co-workers. Especially since her ongoing “battle” with Shelby takes an interesting turn because of this case. I especially enjoyed that Nichelle’s mom made a real appearance in this book, and that she is forced to tell Nichelle the truth about her birth. The mystery is well developed and takes several interesting twists and turns. The police don’t know if they are dealing with a serial killer or if it’s just a one-time kill for personal reasons. There are also ritualistic patterns they can’t ignore which could induce a panic by the public if they don't handle things right. Nichelle does a good job investigating for her daily story and she’s the one who really seems to make all of the important discoveries – it’s like she’s got an extra sense about these things, you know like a "crime whisperer".
Will Nichelle discover the identity of the killer before she becomes his next victim? And just how are a televangelist and the members of his church connected to the mob? You’ll have to read Devil in the Deadline to find out. I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read Nichelle’s next adventure. My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Crowns
These books are just great. Can't wait to read this one.
