About the book:

THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN A SURPRISE FLING…

Sugar Creek, Vermont, is a world away from Los Angeles for high-powered, media-obsessed Harper Day. When she took the job doing publicity for the Cupcake Lovers, she never expected to be won over by the town’s old-fashioned charms. But that was before she moved into the Victorian vacation home of her dreams and fell in with a man whose good looks and irresistible ways are anything but small-town…

IS FINDING TRUE AND LASTING LOVE.

Sam McCloud is a widowed father of two. He and bossy, big-city Harper appear to have nothing in common… though the attraction they feel toward one another cannot be denied. But will their romance last longer than the day’s headlines? There’s more to Harper than meets the eye, and as it turns out, she needs to get married—fast. Little does Harper know that family-man Sam will do whatever it takes to keep her in Sugar Creek—even if that means taking matters into his own hands. And never letting her go…in the fourth novel in the Cupcake Lovers series, In the Mood For Love.

I admit it - I’m a foodie and to me there’s nothing better than mixing two of my favorite things; food and romance, so when I was given the opportunity to read and review Beth Ciotta’s newest entry in her Cupcake Lover’s series, In the Mood for Love, I jumped at the chance.  Featuring a couple that put the emphasis in “opposites attract”, Ms. Ciotta takes us on a romantic adventure set in the colorful small town of Sugar Creek, Vermont and encourages us to remember the best things about falling in love.  While this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read and enjoyed on its own.

A widower with two young kids, Sam McCloud hasn’t quite gotten over the heartbreak of losing his wife to cancer.  Even though he’s gone on plenty of dates, set up by friends and family who think he needs to get out more, no woman has really captured his interest.  Ms. Ciotta does a good job developing Sam’s character; he’s thoughtful, afraid of getting hurt and focused on taking care of his kids.  While a little female diversion can be fun; Sam is more interested in baking and avoiding potentially embarrassing conversations with his children than in maneuvering the female landscape of Sugar Creek, his home town.

Claiming she’s only taking a much needed “vacation”, celebrity publicist Harper Day finds herself in Sugar Creek with more on her hands than she’s willing to handle.  Avoiding her past and worried about her future, Harper isn’t opposed to a temporary “fling” and Sam McCloud is a very tempting distraction.  Ms. Ciotta does a good job developing Harper’s character too; a successful businesswoman who’s avoided dealing with the realities of her life, she’ll find herself having to ask for help  and admitting she can’t do it all on her own.

The secondary characters are well developed and many are characters who’ve been previously introduced in the series.  I especially enjoyed getting to know Sam’s kids, who were quite colorful and humorous.  I enjoyed the fact that they were real secondary characters and not just a device in the story; they gave Sam’s character more depth.  While Sam and Harper come from different backgrounds, and are polar opposites, their verbal and physical chemistry is obvious to everyone else and watching their relationship grow is quite fun.

Will Sam and Harper realize the mutual attraction they have is more than just physical? Will Sam take a second chance on love? You’ll have to read In the Mood for Love to find out.  I enjoyed it and look forward to seeing whose story Ms. Ciotta gives us next.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns
