Everyone needs love and it's important we let others know we love them. This is especially true during Valentine's Day when we get an opportunity to share our love with our loved ones. Emlyn Chand shares this concept in a unique and sweet way with children in Vicky Finds a Valentine. Without sounding like a broken record, I can't recommend Ms. Chand's Bird Brain Books highly enough for parents. They are well written, very well illustrated and lots of fun for beginning readers between the ages of 6-8 years old.
Vicky, a love bird, is happily living with a family when her favorite human, Marie, begins making Valentines Day Cards and shares how important it is to have a special friend on Valentines Day. Determined to find her own "special" friend, Vicky manages to get out of her cage and goes on her own "excursion" to find a special friend. I really enjoyed how Ms. Chand illustrates that to have a friend, you have to be willing to be a friend and Vicky is very willing. As Vicky soon learns though, not everyone is suited to be a "friend" and sometimes someone who acts like they want to be your friend, has their own secret agenda.
Will Vicky discover who her special friend is on Valentines Day? You'll have to read Vicky Finds A Valentine to find out. I think this is a really cute story and look forward to reading more of the Bird Brain Books.
