My Review:

Both a second chance romance and a coming of age tale, Francesca of Lost Nation by Lucinda Sue Crosby is sure to please  a varied crowd.  With likable characters, a criminal mystery and a town with a quirky history, Ms. Crosby captured my attention and never let go.  Taking place right after the end of World War II, the author captures the emotional and cultural temperament of a country recovering from war.

Beginning as the recollection of an adult Sarah, we learn about her life growing up at "Home Farm" in Lost Nation, Iowa.  Living in a house which houses three generations, Francesca, Sarah's maternal grandmother, her parents and herself, Sarah keeps busy during the summer by helping both her mother and her grandmother with their daily tasks.  When Sarah's father, whom she calls "Daddyboys", wins an all expense paid trip to Paris for two, Sarah and her grandmother "Francesca" find themselves spending the summer alone.

As Francesca, a woman near 60 years of age, and Sarah, a ten year old girl, spend the summer together they discover their strong bond being tested by the events which take place.  Ms. Crosby did an excellent job providing us with the widely different viewpoints of two characters with vastly different ages and experiences.  As they spend time together, Sarah receives lessons about her family and the town that she calls home.  When adventure comes calling, both Sarah and Francesca will have to decide just how far they're willing to go.

With an arsonist setting fires in nearby towns, an airshow which comes to town, and a man who comes to live on the farm and run "Daddyboys" shop while he's out of town, Francesca and Sarah spend a summer together neither will ever forget.

Will Francesca take a chance on love with a younger man?  Will Sarah realize her family and the memories of that summer will be the best she'll ever have?  You'll have to read Francesca of Lost Nation to find out.  I really enjoyed reading this story and I think you will too.  I know I'll be looking for more of Ms. Crosby's books to enjoy!

My Rating:  4.5 out of 5 Crowns
