Flashback Sunday- To The Edge By Cindy Gerard

So in continuing with my theme of Flashback Sunday, here is another book that I missed the first time around and just finished this week.

Author:            Cindy Gerard

Genre:              Romantic Suspense

Purchase:       To the Edge (The Bodyguards, Book 1)

Excerpt

From the Author:

Nolan Garrett’s on a roll. For three months he’s managed to sustain a string of booze-soaked days and mercifully dreamless nights, searching for a comfort zone at the bottom of the barrel. Just when he thinks he’s getting close, life takes a turn for the worse and dumps him back into the thick of things.

He’s found a job. Or rather a job has found him.

Job title: Bodyguard.

Objective: Keep Jillian Kincaid, the only child of one of the richest men in Palm Beach, Florida, alive.

Prospects: Not good for this ex-army Ranger who’s more interested in working on his own not-quite-subconscious death wish.

Jillian Kincaid doesn’t have a death wish. She’s got a life wish – to carry on with the one she’s built on her own, disconnected from her father’s power and wealth. She’s used brains, savvy and in-your-face determination to carve out a career in the highly competitive television news industry. And she’ll be damned if she’ll let a couple of death threats take it all away from her when she’s on a fast track to a cable network anchor. Duck and run? Not in this lifetime.

Only this lifetime is growing shorter and shorter for Jillian as a sick, sinister predator stalks her with only one purpose in mind. To see her dead.

My Review:

Nolan Garrett is an Ex-Special Forces soldier who has come home after his service in Afghanistan/Iraq and is carrying a ton of guilt on his shoulders.  He feels guilt for the soldiers that never made it home that were under his command and also for some of the ones that made it home and are damaged.  So instead of trying to make up for it....he's feeling sorry for himself and is on a self destructive alcohol binge.  Lucky for him his family steps in and bascially hounds him until he agrees to go to work for the family business, E.D.E.N. Securities, Inc.  He agrees to take on a case of being a bodyguard for Jillian Kincaid.   Suddenly being responsible for someone else's safety makes Nolan take a good look at what has been going on in his life and he is finally able to start taking control again.  Basically this saves him from himself.

Jillian Kincaid is the daughter of one of the world's richest and most successful men.  She has spent her whole like not understanding her own family, her father is driven to success and has controlled a good portion of her life.   Her mother is somewhat cold and distant.  Jillian is finally out on her own and is resentful of anyone or anything trying to control her life, to say she didn't want a bodyguard is telling it lightly.  However, circumstances force her to have to face the facts that someone is trying to kill her and she has no choice but to give in to her father's demand that she have protection.  She too has issues from her past that need to be dealt with, a recently ended affair with a man who turned out to be married and a news story she is working on for a victim of a mugging that is taking a toll on both the victim and her.

Neither of these 2 people look at each other as friends much less in a romantic way at the beginning of the book.  Having to depend on each other though changes the way that they look at life and also the way that they look at each other.  This does have a very good mystery that is being solved, who wants Jillian dead and why.  The resolution of the mystery caught me completely by surprise.   I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes romantic suspense books.  This book is the first in the series of the Bodyguard series, there are 6 books total in the series.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns
