Who is the big monster in Haven 6? Guest Post by Aubrie Dionne

If you read any of the New Dawn series, you know every book had a “big monster” that gets in the way of the main protagonists:

The zombies in A Hero Rising
The sandworms and the desert cows in Paradise 21
The alien mammoths in Tundra 37

So the big question is: what’s the big monster in Haven 6!!!

Each monster is a product of their environments, so I wanted a hairy jungle monster able to live in the swampy environment on Haven 6- kind of like the same planet Yoda lived on in Star Wars. This monster had to humongous, dangerous, and hairy, while at the same time make sense with the planet so it wasn’t ridiculous. The monster I came up with is big and hairy all right! But, you’ll have to read Haven 6 to find out what it is!

Number of pages: 326

Book Description:

A product of an illegal pairing, Eridani is the only woman without a lifemate aboard the colonization ship, the Heritage, and she is determined her less than perfect DNA will not get in the way of finding love. As the ship nears it's final destination of Haven 6 after five hundred years of travel, images of the surface show evidence of intelligent life on a planet that's supposed to be uninhabited. Commander Grier assigns Eri to the exploratory team to spy on the alien society and return with information on how to defeat them.

When Eri's team lands, tribes of humans attack and Eri is saved by Striver, the descendant of a colonist and a pirate from Old Earth's colonization efforts in other parts of the galaxy. Striver helps Eri rescue her team and they are drawn to each other despite their different allegiances. While Striver battles with trusting Eri, Eri must decide whether to warn him and his people about the commander's intentions, or follow orders and complete her mission.

Excerpt:

Chapter 7
Savior

Leaves swayed in the wind above the thin beam of bluish light, the only thing separating Eri from the wilderness. She stared into the darkness over the perimeter fence. The jungle stretched around her forever, more sinister than the vast vacuum of deep space. The dim lights of their transport ship only penetrated so far. Rustling raised the hairs on the back of her neck. A stray leaf wafted toward the beam. The electricity zapped it and it sizzled, a burning smell tainting the air. Eri hugged her arms around her chest. Would the beam work?
“Don’t worry, strawberry curls; we’ve got it covered.”

Startled, Eri whipped around. Mars smirked, and then returned to the fluorescent miniscreen in her lap. She ran her finger along the keypad and passed it to Tank. “Ha! Beat that, starship destroyer.”  Anger simmered in Eri’s throat. They weren’t reviewing base camp conditions like Litus had instructed. They weren’t even paying attention. Who knew when the aliens would find them?

Tank’s fingers grazed the screen as he hurtled comets the size of raisins at virtual spaceships. The faint triumphant, techno music of Galaxy Battlefield played in the background.  Stupid thugs. Grier had handpicked these people to meet a new intelligent species and represent humankind?

Eri walked around the back of the scout ship and found a container wide enough to sit down.  At least they wouldn’t bother her there.  Her legs kicked in rhythm against the plastic. Thump, thump…thump, thump. Litus had instructed the team to rest tonight so they could get an early start when the sun came up. She didn’t think she’d sleep a wink. In fact, all she really wanted to do was get back on the ship and seal the hatch.

Branches snapped. Eri checked over her shoulder, expecting some gray humanoid to dart from the forest. Instead, Litus rounded the corner. He brought an extra packet of soybean wafers and a bottle of mineral water.

“Feeling okay?”

“As okay as I can in a strange jungle with unknown beasts surrounding us on all sides.” Eri took the bottle and the wafer.

“Thanks.”

“No problem.” Litus ignored her sarcasm and settled beside her.  He unwrapped his soybean wafer and held it in his hand without taking a bite. She tore open her wafer and the wrapper crinkled in the wind. A stray piece of foil flew into the darkness, making Eri shiver.  Would the jungle swallow the team just as easily?

About the Author:

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation-favorite character was Data by far-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "A concert flutist" when she grew up. When she made that happen, she decided one career was not enough and embarked as a fantasy, sci fi author. Two careers seem to keep her busy. For now.

Her writings have appeared in Mindflights, Niteblade, Silver Blade, Emerald Tales, Hazard Cat, Moon Drenched Fables, A Fly in Amber, and Aurora Wolf. Her books are published by Entangled Publishing, Lyrical Press, and Gypsy Shadow Publishing. She recently signed her YA sci fi novel with Inkspell Publishing titled: Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed, which will release in October 2012.

My Review:

Two warring tribes, birdmen and a spaceship which has reached it's destination after a 500 year journey, are just part of the action taking place in Haven 6, the fourth and final book in Aubrie Dionne's New Dawn series.  With a likable heroine and hero, good dialogue and a well developed setting, Ms. Dionne's sci-fi romance captured my attention from the first page.  While it's been a while since we last visited the planet called "Refuge", last seen at the end of Paradise 21, it was nice to discover what's happened in the 300 plus years since we left it.

Linguist Eridani "Eri" Smith is the product of an illegal pairing and the only adult female aboard the spaceship Heritage, who's been denied a lifemate.  Feeling sorry for herself, and secretly contemplating hacking the computer system which chooses lifemates, she's pleased to be selected as part of the advance landing team on the planet they know as Haven 6 (which we know as Refuge).  Hoping a successful mission would force the captain to give her a lifemate, Eri is surprised to discover her new brother in law has been placed in charge of the mission.  With a warning from her sister, Eri is not exactly sure just what their mission is, are they to establish friendly communications or spy on the planets alien lifeforms in order to seize the planet for themselves?

Young, strong and virile, Striver is the leader of his tribe.  Determined to keep his people safe from the "lawless" pirates who inhabit another part of their planet, he's also tasked with helping "The Guardians" keep what technology they have away from what's left of humanity.  He's also trying to keep his distance from one of his tribeswomen who wants to become his mate.  When a space shuttle arrives on his planet, he knows it's important to discover their plans and make sure their technology doesn't fall into the hands of the lawless.

The scenes between Eri and Striver are well written and their relationship develops at a very nice pace.  With so much at stake, it's important they get to know each other and discover who's worthy of trust.  Ms. Dionne did an excellent job developing their characters and introducing Eri to the descendants of a previously lost ship.  As they learn to trust each other, Eri will have to make a choice between doing what her captain wants or doing what is best for everyone involved.  At the same time, Striver will have to decide if he's made a mistake by giving Eri his trust.

The secondary characters are well developed and their actions help to move the story along, I especially liked Litus, Eri's brother in law, Eri's sister Aquaria and Phoenix, the lead "Guardian" (you'll have to read the book to find out just who they are).  The villains of the story are also well developed from Commander Greer, the human who's brain operates the space ship Heritage, to Jolt, the leader of the lawless.  We also get introduced to Weaver, Striver's younger brother, who leaves his brother and his tribe to join the lawless.

Will all of Eri's dreams come true and will Striver agree to be her lifemate?  Will the old and the new inhabitants of Haven learn to get along and learn from man's previous mistakes?  You'll have to read Haven 6 to find out.  I really enjoyed it and I think you will too.

Historical Romance

Logan McCutcheon returns to colonial Virginia after seven years in the hands of Shawnee Indians. But was he really a captive, as everybody thinks? He looks and fights like a warrior, and seems eager to return to those he calls friends and family.

Kira McClure has waited for Logan all those years, passing herself off as odd to keep suitors at bay––and anyone else from getting too close.  Now that he's back, he seems to be the only person capable of protecting her from the advances of Josiah Campbell and accusations of witchcraft.  And to defend the settlers against a well-organized band of murderous thieves.

Excerpt:

He threw back his head and laughed.

Disconcerting. Most people simply stared at her or shook their heads when she acted peculiar, not this undisguised mirth. “I can’t imagine why you’re taking on like this.”

“No?” He succumbed to another paroxysm of laughter. “I must admit you’re good.”

A lift of her chin. “At what, pray tell?”

“Play acting.”

Stiffening her reply, she said, “I haven’t the faintest notion what you mean.”

He wiped his eyes on the wide sleeve of his loosely belted shirt. “Haven’t you, now?”

Her eyes strayed to his browned chest where the earth-colored cloth gapped open at his neck. “Not at all.”

“If you truly wish me to think you tetched, dim the brightness in your gaze. Try for a more vacant expression.”

“I can manage quite well without direction from you. “ She hesitated. “I mean––”

"I know what you mean. I see you’re quite the actress.”

Shifting her gaze from the intensity in his expression to the swaying branches, she asked, “How so?”

“I could always see right through you.”

An odd flop in her stomach and she slid her gaze back to his penetrating eyes. “Always? “

“Don’t you know me, Cricket?”

“Good heavens,” she breathed out, and leaned weakly against the tree. She could have toppled to the forest floor. Only two people had ever called her by that name and this definitely wasn’t her brother. The teasing youth she’d adored had returned a man in warrior’s clothing, hardened now, tested by wind and fire. “Logan? “

Review - Sanctuary by Samaire Provost

Sanctuary
Mad World, Book 2
Samaire Provost
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Release Date: August 30, 2012
Length: 212 Pages
Dystopian: YA

Blurb:

The year is 2017, and the Black Plague infection has swept across most of the United States, leaving death and chaos in its wake. Martial law is the rule rather than the exception, with outbreaks cropping up when they're least expected.

Alyssa and her friends must not only battle outbreaks of the disease, but also find themselves pursued by government agents – men and women determined to track them down at any cost. Fleeing north to the fabled Sanctuary, Alyssa, Jacob, DeAndre, Caitlyn, Risa and Luke face disturbing ordeals and terrible tragedy as they encounter unbelievable situations in their struggle to reach safety. Using their skills and wits in their fight to survive against ever worsening odds, they weather hardship, betrayal, and the ever-present specter of death as they flee north, all the while vowing to protect one another – and most of all their precious 5-year-old Luke, from a world gone mad.

Sanctuary, the second installment in the Mad World series, is a heart-rending adventure of astonishing revelations, tragic discoveries, agonizing separations and devastating losses that test these friends to their limits. With heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat suspense at every turn, this is a story you will not be able to put down. Find out what happens next.

My Review:

The second book in the Mad World series, Sanctuary takes place five years after the events of Epidemic.  As Samaire Provost takes us back into the Dystopian world she's created with a resurgence of the Black Plague, we find the characters struggling to survive in a world full of zombies.  At the end of Epidemic the characters who survived were 4 teenagers, 1 young child and a newborn, who wasn't fully human.  Now these same characters are 4 young adults in their early twenties, a young teenage girl of 13 - who's going on twenty five, and a five year old boy, who's special and possibly crucial to the outlook for the human race.

Alyssa, Ryan, DeAndre, Caitlyn, Rissa and Luke have managed to survive the last five years by moving further and further east trying to outrun the plague.  Fighting zombies to survive and laying low has become their way of life.  Staying under the radar so the CDC doesn't track them has also become important as Luke, the human/zombie hybrid baby has become a part of the family and considers Alyssa and Ryan his parents and Rissa as his older sister.  When they receive a warning that the CDC is close to where they are hiding, they all agree to go north to Canada in search of a place known only as "Sanctuary".

As the group tries to make their way north, they'll be faced with familiar hardships; the zombies always seem to pop up everywhere and when you least expect them, and they find themselves giving shelter to a man who may or may not turn out to be a spy for the CDC.  I really liked how Ms. Provost kept the pace moving in this installment of the trilogy, the young people have really matured and become a family unit.  Their devotion to each other is evident in how they care for each other and how they defend the group.  It was really nice to see how they've come to accept Luke and want to protect him, even though he's not fully human.  He's really a nice little kid and well behaved throughout the whole book too.

Will Alyssa and her new family be able to find the place known as Sanctuary?  What will the future for them bring?  You'll have to read Sanctuary to find out.  I really enjoyed this installment and the twists and turns Ms. Provost brings to the story.  I have to give you a warning though - this story does have a cliffhanger type ending and now I'm chomping at the bit to get my hands on Desperation, the next book in this series.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns

Review - Demos City Blues by Jonathan Lister

Demos City Blues
The Demos City Reporters #2
Jonathan Lister
Amazon Digital Services, Inc.
Release Date: July 9, 2012
Length: 139 Pages
Urban Fantasy

Blurb:

War is coming to Demos City -- in more ways than one. Leon Gray struggles to balance a new job with helping his daughter Shauna navigate the landmine life of a full werewolf. Further complicating matters, a new Alpha has arrived in Demos, laying claim to the territory as her own -- including Leon.

Meanwhile, the information David Hastings unearthed may reveal a much darker truth than anyone expected. Demos City's corruption has deep roots, older than the bones of the town itself. Can Gray and Hastings keep the city from tearing itself apart long enough to discover the source? Can it wait until Leon sees Shauna's high school play?

My Review:

Demos City Blues the second book in the Demos City Reports series by Jonathan Lister picks up right where Welcome to Demos ends.  I was somewhat at a disadvantage reading this book due to not knowing that.  At first the multiple plots were a little confusing to me and the pace was somewhat uneven due to this, however, the characters were well developed and likable.  Mr. Lister created a world where werewolves are out and about and reside in a somewhat uncomfortable alliance with humans.

Leon Gray, a non-pack wolf, has been busy trying to help his daughter Shauna get used to the changes being a werewolf brings to being a teenager.  He's also acting as a bodyguard for newspaper reporter David Hastings, a man who took literally took a shot for him when someone tried to gun him down in the previous book.  On top of all of that Leon is also trying to stay out of trouble with the law, he's had some previous run ins with them, and stay out of the werewolf politics trying to take over Demos City - namely three werewolf packs all trying to claim the city as their own.  Mr. Lister did a good job developing Leon's character; we get to see him as a father, a werewolf protecting his client and his daughter, and a man who's trying to manage his own wolf.  Something that's not always easy when he gets agitated.  We also get to see Leon as just a man who's lost his wife and finds himself attracted to a woman he knows he should avoid at all costs.

Newspaper reporter David Hastings knows the political situation in Demos City is rife with corruption.  The son of a power broker in town, he's willing to turn his back on his privileged upbringing to expose the corruption he sees in both the political structure and the police department.  Taking a private assignment from Alameda Ramirez, a local cop in town, he finds himself suddenly needing a bodyguard and in need of a solid clue in locating what Mr. Ramirez is trying to expose.  Clearly he knows about the existence of werewolves - he just didn't plan on discovering there are more things that go bump in the night hanging out in town.

As both Leon and David try to unravel the mysteries of what is taking place in Demos City, they find themselves in the midst of both a werewolf war and a battle between wizards and some interesting immortal beings.  With help from the secondary characters, mostly Leon's daughter Shauna, Shauna's grandmother and Alameda Ramirez, they might make it through the week alive.  Only if they can stay ahead of all of the double crosses taking place.

Will Leon remain a pack less werewolf or will he be forced to choose sides?  Will he be the one who chooses, or will his actions decide his fate for him?  Will David be able to uncover the secrets Alameda Ramirez needs him to uncover?  You'll have to read Demos City Blues to find out.  I enjoyed it and I think you will too, though I really encourage you to read Welcome To Demos first.

Lilly Cain

Genre: Contemporary Erotic Romance
Publisher: Carina Press

Number of pages: 44
Word Count: 15,000

Book Description:

Travis Morgan is thrilled to encounter the one woman who's never failed to get his blood pumping. Seeing Alicia Davis again brings it all back: their fierce academic rivalry, and the fact that he never followed through on his erotic fantasies about her.

Alicia can't resist Travis's smoldering sensuality--or the opportunity to finally bed the man who starred in so many of her lustful daydreams in college. Unable to avoid the temptation to best Travis one more time, Alicia plans to submit to one night of pure pleasure and then leave Travis empty-handed and craving more.

When Travis wakes up and realizes Alicia's played him, the gloves are off, and the game heats up as they each try to emerge on top--by whatever means necessary...

Excerpt:

Relax—everything went exactly as you planned, didn’t it?” Alicia’s best friend, Selene, spoke around pouted lips as she painted her mouth a violent shade of red in the gallery’s powder room.

“Yeah.” Alicia stared into the mirror. There should have been a big grin on her face. Hell, she should feel happy, confident. Smug, even. She’d gotten what she wanted: a night with Travis to settle all the old regrets from years ago. And she’d enjoyed it, enjoyed him, and gotten the tickets to the exhibit. She’d triumphed and even rubbed it in a little—he’d missed his flight and was stuck with the hotel bill. It should feel good, finally getting back at him for embarrassing her in college. She should be laughing. Instead, she felt like she’d swallowed something hard and cold.

“Well, buck up, chickie. We’re here, rubbing shoulders and making contacts. Travis never knew what hit him, and he’s probably still trying to decide if he’ll ever recover.” Selene glanced over at her and grinned.

“Right.” Alicia flicked her hair over her shoulder and bared her teeth at the mirror. The problem was she wasn’t sure she’d recover. The sex had been incredible. She licked her lips, her mouth suddenly dry as she thought yet again about Travis’s hard body and the way he’d taken control in bed. That hadn’t been part of the plan, but it had been her favorite part of the night.

She shivered. It was a damn good thing she’d woken first, taken the Wyeth tickets and run. Otherwise she might have stayed, and that was not something she was about to consider. Travis was in sales, for God’s sake. She’d already gotten rid of one cutthroat asshole. She didn’t need to get involved with another.

What she’d found attractive in Travis at State was the same thing that had drawn her to her ex-husband Richard: an aggressive competitiveness that at first seemed so sexy. It had been a disaster in a marriage. Sleeping and screwing with Travis’s plans was a sort of payback to all the guy players out there, every one of them just like her sleazy ex. She’d gone for it, and she’d won.

“C’mon. You look awesome, and I—” Selene blew a kiss at the mirror, “—am ravishing, of course. Let’s go.” She led the way out of the powder room and Alicia followed. The hallway quickly branched into the first gallery room, where people mingled and took in the beauty of a varied collection Andrew Wyeth’s best, and last, works.

Alicia wandered toward the watercolor collection along the back wall. Despite weeks of coveting the contacts the exhibit, and events like it, might bring her private charter business, the idea of making polite conversation left her repressing a sigh. Selene walked with her for a moment but then peeled off to chat with a small group of men hovering near an appetizer station. She had a wicked look in her eye. Alicia shook her head and grinned as she silently wished the single men in the group luck.

Against the brick red of the backdrop wall, the first watercolor landscape’s pale colors caught Alicia’s attention but didn’t hold her interest for long. She walked on to study the next and then the next until she found the first portrait on display. Wyeth, the “Painter of the People,” had always been one of her favorite artists and the reason the exhibit had snagged her interest. Planning a way to turn her love of art into a way to bolster her business was a bonus. She would have come to the exhibit anyway if the place hadn’t been sold out. How had Travis managed to get her a set of tickets? She shook her head. Why are you thinking of him again?

Alicia studied the clean lines of the painting before her. The face of the woman stared back at her. Barely smiling, she still had a lush sensuality that seemed to express contentment, satisfaction, and perhaps sexual completion. “Like I haven’t thought about sex enough,” she muttered to herself.

“And here I’d begun to believe you didn’t think about it enough.”

Alicia froze at the deep tones of the voice coming from behind her. Oh, no. It couldn’t be. She glanced over her shoulder and then back at the painting, grimacing at the realization that Travis had followed her to the exhibit. Of course he’d known she’d be here—he’d given her the damn tickets.

“Travis. Come to see the exhibit for yourself?”

“Not exactly.” He laid a hand on her shoulder, gently, possessively.

Her heart pounded in at his touch.

“I came to see you. The way I see it is, you still owe me a flight. You skipped out on me last night and now here I am, stuck in Chicago and no trip to Boston on the roster.”

She glanced up at him, checked to see if there was any anger in his eyes. His voice sounded like deep velvet plush, and beyond being wickedly sexy, it held the slightest hint of danger. Her nipples peaked inside her silk dress. “Hardly my fault you slept through the flight.”

“No? I think it might be. Keeping you under control wore me out.” He glanced at the painting. “And it gave you the same look she has, right there.”
