About the book:

Libby O'Rourke has a short fuse. Her mother, Mae, carries a big match. Engulfed in the never-ending life-juggling of suburbia, Libby fails to notice Mae's emerging dementia symptoms until a kitchen fire puts the problem on the front burner.

Proficient in the art of denial, Mae brushes the shattering diagnosis aside and sets her sights on a matchmaking crusade for her eldest son. After all, if her lucid days are numbered, Mae’s going to make damned sure he makes it down the aisle while she still recognizes the groom.

It’s going to take a razor wit and an iron stomach to handle Mae's diagnosis. Thankfully, just like her mother Libby has both.

EXCERPT

Libby felt the weight of the coming conversation bear down on her shoulders like a lead blanket and struggled to find the right words.

“It’s all right, Libby,” Mae said, interrupting her thoughts. “Say what you need to. We’re here for a reason. We both know it.”

Shocked by her mother’s perception, Libby stared at Mae.

The older woman’s eyes were moist but holding back. She continued. “Spit it out, honey. I won’t have a public tantrum. It’s obvious you have something important to talk to me about, and I think you’ve delayed long enough.”

Libby’s shoulders slumped. “How’d you know?”

“Well, let’s examine the facts...” Mae grinned despite the gravity of the moment. “You took me to church, plied me with brunch, and now you’re standing there biting your bottom lip raw. Daddy used to call that your tell. We always knew something was wrong if your bottom lip looked like it had a run-in with a cheese grater.”

“Huh?” Libby ran her tongue over her bottom lip. “I never noticed.”

“In your teens, we were pretty sure you were going to bite clean through it,” Mae joked. “At least your nervous habit isn’t offensive; whenever Kevin lies, he grabs his testicles. Since the day he was born that boy treated his penis like an accessory. It’s terribly inappropriate, especially at parties.”

Dealing with everyday life and family dilemmas, Adding Lib by Kathryn Elliott, the first book in the McGinn series, is filled with colorful characters, funny dialogue and a light romance.  From the first page to the last, Ms. Elliott’s story grabbed my attention, made me laugh and even brought tears to my eyes.  Reminding us what’s best, and worst about family, everyday life and dealing with sometimes difficult and serious situations, Ms. Elliott’s debut novel is a genuine delight.  She’s definitely going to be an author to watch.

Ms. Elliott does a good job developing all of the characters in her story and I found myself easily connecting with Elizabeth “Libby” O’Rourke and her colorful family.  I especially liked her husband Bob, a public defender, and enjoyed their sweet relationship and how they dealt with their children and gastronomically challenged dog.  I also enjoyed getting to know Caroline, Libby’s best friend from childhood, and her older brother Sean, who secretly has a crush on Caroline.  One of the best characters of all though was Mae McGinn, Libby’s mom, who is a force to be reckoned with.  She actually reminded me a little bit of the title character in “Auntie Mame” with her eccentric behavior and sharp wit.

Tackling family dynamics with humor and realism, Ms. Elliott addresses peer pressure, teenage angst, getting older, and even Alzheimers.  She even reminds us that we need to get yearly checkups and that watching what we eat, exercising and just generally taking care of ourselves is important from childhood to the end.

Will Libby be able to get her mother to deal with her impending health issues?  Will Mae find her son a wife before it’s too late for her to remember?  And how will Libby’s family deal with everything that’s going on all at once?  You’ll have to read Adding Lib to find out.  I loved it and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Excerpt from "A Season in Gemini" by Victoria Danann

Garland pulled up in front of her building, grabbed the rolling suitcase with essential stuff, smiled at Max, the doorman, and gave him the car keys so that he could have the car parked in a two thousand dollars per month garage spot nearby. She might not use it again for weeks, or even months, but it was nice to know she could.

“I’m home!” She took a deep breath and called out to anyone who might be in the flat. Since it was Sunday that would probably be either her father or no one.

She walked the length of the kitchen and beyond to a small, but elegant and sunny breakfast room that overlooked Central Park and was rarely seen by anyone other than the two living St. Germaines and staff.

“I say, ‘I’m home!’”, she repeated as she flopped into a chair opposite where her dad was having coffee and reading the paper.

David St. Germaine looked over the top of the Wall Street Journal. “So I see.”

“Wow. Welcome home.”

He slid a section of the Sunday Times toward where she sat across the glass top table. “I second the ‘wow’.”

Before looking down at whatever he wanted her to see, she could tell that he was the farthest thing from happy. When she’d seen him two days before at graduation, he’d been delighted. He and his date for the day. Garland didn’t remember her name. There was no point. Her father rarely saw women more than once.

On the cusp of fifty, he was still handsome, with a little silver above his ears and a tan that never faded completely because he made a point of sailing twice a month, when weather and business permitted. He’d been referred to as ‘eligible bachelor’ in the, ahem, society pages more than once, but Garland doubted the veracity of that claim. Since her mother’s death, he hadn’t given anyone reason to think he was ‘eligible’.

Garland tore her eyes away from his scowl, not his most attractive expression, to look at the paper in front of her. The front and center color image was none other than herself wearing a short sparkly dress that had ridden far too high as she fell backwards spilling a colorful beverage when she went sprawling into the laps of laughing friends.

The headline read, “Germane Enterprises Princess Out on the Town. Daddy’s little girl lets her hair down and her skirt up.”

As she stared at the page, her father said, “Nice dress,” in a tone dripping with sarcasm.

Without looking up, she said quietly, “We were just having some fun. We just graduated…”

“How many times have I told you that what you do reflects on me? And, by extension, on Germane Enterprises?”

She met his glare. “Thousands.”

“That’s right! Thousands. You would think a girl capable of graduating Dartmouth summa cum laude would get it after mere dozens of times.”

Boosting Creativity for Writing by Jennifer Chase

Writing is tough work, but at the same time, it is a bug that I can’t seem to shake.  It gets into your bones and you seem to live, eat and breathe it.  I cannot imagine my life without it even with all of its challenges.  I budget my time for writing projects, clients, and studying crime trends.  Sometimes it is a difficult life to balance and I find that I need to have some other creative outlets to calm and balance my mind.

I haven’t experienced the infamous and sometimes taboo condition of “writer’s block”, but I have experienced difficulty writing high tension scenes (usually involving serial killers) and the feeling of burn out or exhaustion seems to accompany it.

Here is my list of creative mind boosters:

     1.   Take a walk.

It’s simple.  Easy.  Even if you’ve walked your neighborhood a million times and you think that it’s boring or uneventful.  This time, really look at every detail that surrounds you.  Every plant.  Look at the architecture of your neighbor’s houses: windows, doors, fences, porches, and garages.  Look at the sidewalk or road.  What’s changed?  How does it look at this particular time of day?  Imagine how the road was constructed and who might have worked on the construction.  Run a story through your mind.

     2.   Check out your thesaurus.

For me, I find that I like to use similar words when I describe action in my books.  Jot down 10-20 action words that you like to use and then look them up in the thesaurus and make a list of alternative words.  Apply these new versions of your favorite action words into sentences and keep as a handy reference for your projects.
Write down a recent event or dream.

Write freestyle.  Don’t’ worry about grammar or spelling, just go for it.  Write about your trip to the grocery store or friend’s house in as much detail as possible.  Or, write about a dream that seems to stay with you.  Have some fun with this writing task.  Elaborate on your story and use the full extent of your imagination in the process.

     3.  Read a book in a completely different genre.

Pick up a book that’s in a genre that you never read – now really go out on a limb here.  If you like mysteries and thrillers, pick up a historical romance, fantasy, or sci-fi book.  Or, if you only read poetry or memoirs, pick up a high-action thriller.  You can always learn something from every book you read and by reading a genre outside your comfort zone you will find some interesting details in the plot and character development.

     4.  Take time with a favorite hobby.

Do something completely different and take your mind away from your writing. It’s a great way to exercise your mind and creativity, but gives your writing a break.

What is the Appeal of Romantic Suspense? By Blair McDowell

Romance has the largest market of all books published in English in the United States.  And of all books classified as “Romance” the most popular are Historical and Suspense. This is an indisputable fact.

That being so, why is it? What makes Romantic Suspense so appealing to readers?

Generally speaking, the plot of any romance novel is about a man, a woman, (or any combination of romantic partners) and a problem or problems they must resolve before they can live happily ever after.

Romantic suspense takes that basic recipe and adds one important element to it—danger. All pervasive, life threatening danger.

The source of this danger may be unclear to the characters and thus to the reader, until late in the book. There may be ambiguity as to who the villain is, or even why the hero and heroine are in trouble or are being threatened and/or pursued. Chills and thrills are what make a good romantic suspense.

A fan of my books recently said to me after reading Romantic Road, “I kept thinking I was at the climax of the book and then something else happened!”

I was delighted. That’s what we aim for in Romantic Suspense, cliff-hanging chapter endings, unexpected plot twists, characters who are not always as they seem, and above all, pacing -- fast, spinning-out-of-control pacing.

And yet, the relationship between the two central characters must grow and develop in a credible way through-out the rollercoaster ride of Romantic Suspense. The “romance” in Romantic Suspense is just as important as the “suspense”. This is not easy from a writer’s perspective. How do we make time for love in the midst of chase scenes and abductions and car explosions and other such adventures? It isn’t enough to have the two simply fall into each other’s’ arms as the curtain falls. A love story has somehow to be woven into the fabric of the story, as the two race across continents, evade villains, and save whatever it is they’re trying to save.

Another aspect to consider when writing Romantic Suspense is research. While research is important when writing in any genre, it brings a set of highly specific problems when writing suspense. What is police procedure, in France or Italy or Germany? How do paramedics behave when they first enter an accident scene in Amsterdam? What’s the weather like in Rothenberg in October? Where is the hospital on the Greek island of Crete?

Research is vital to writing any novel, but it is of particular importance when writing romantic suspense. It all goes to the point of believability, or more accurately, to the suspension of disbelief in the reader. Thorough research makes this easier to achieve.

I’m a great believer in on-site research. Google may be great, but when I set my book in Salzburg, I’ve been to Salzburg. When I describe a hotel on the Romantische Strasse, I’ve stayed there, and when I describe the taste of apple fritters in Germany, I’ve eaten them. And, yes, I’ve been in the hospital on Crete, although I don’t necessarily recommend going to that extreme!

The point is, all my stories are set in places I know and love. I think this gives them a certain credibility they might not otherwise have.

I love writing romantic suspense. I love the mental gymnastics of plot construction and the fun of it when a new possibility suddenly occurs to me as I’m writing.

In all, romantic suspense is my favorite genre in which either to read or to write.

About the book:

When Lacy Telchev buries her husband she finds herself in treacherous waters. Igor, much older than Lacy, had secrets. Suddenly Lacy is being chased across Europe by men who believe she can lead them to those secrets. Evading her pursuers with the aid of a chance acquaintance, the handsome and mysterious Max Petersen, Lacy travels across Germany, Austria and Hungary, to a shattering discovery in Budapest.

Along the way, she meets three women from Igor's past. As Igor's story unfolds through them, Lacy is less and less certain who her husband really was. Who can Lacy trust? Will she survive to find out?

EXCERPT

They were leaving the hotel when Lacy grabbed Max’s arm. “Stop!”

“What’s wrong?”

“There’s a man waiting at the station.”

Max looked at him. “The one in the raincoat?” “He’s one of the men who threatened me back in the Berkshires that night. And then again in Wurzburg.”

“Are you sure?”

“What’s he doing here?” Lacy’s voice rose on a note of hysteria. “How did they find me? Why are they doing this to me?”

As Max studied him, the man was joined by his partner.

“You’re with me, Lacy. I won’t let anything bad happen to you. You must believe me. These people have no authority here. Now, let’s just go take the train down the mountain. We’ll lose them when we get off, I promise you.”

“Didn’t you say it was possible to hike down?” “Yes, but…”

“Please, Max. I don’t want to be anywhere near them. I don’t want them to see me.”

 AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Blair McDowell wrote her first short story when she was eleven and has never ceased writing since, although only recently has she been able to return to her first love, writing fiction.  During her early years, she taught in universities in the United States, Canada and Australia, and wrote several highly successful books in her field.

Her research has taken her to many interesting places.  She has lived in Europe, Australia, the United States and the Caribbean and Canada, and spent considerable time in still other places, Iceland, the Far East, and the Torres Strait Islands off the coast of New Guinea. Now she travels for pleasure. Portugal, Greece and Italy are favorite haunts.

Her books are set in places she knows and loves and are peopled with characters drawn from her experiences of those places.  The Memory of Roses takes readers to the Greek Island of Corfu, where a young woman finds her future while searching for her father's past.  In Delighting in Your Company, the reader is transported to a small island in the Caribbean, with a heroine who finds herself in the unenviable position of falling in love with a ghost.  The setting for Sonata is the city of Vancouver, with its vibrant multicultural population and its rich musical life, and the heroine is a musician who finds herself in unexpected danger.

In her most recent release, Romantic Road, Lacy Telchev, is pursued along Germany’s famous Romantische Strausse as she follows clues left by her late husband in order to solve a mystery that she doesn’t understand, while being chased by dangerous and cunning adversaries.

She hopes her readers will enjoy reading these books as much as she enjoyed writing them.
