She’s the “new girl”, and she hasn’t regretted it for one day. This town is her sanctuary. Her home. Cunningham Falls, Montana is his town, and being a cop and protecting what’s his is his passion. Meet Kristen:

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.

Read an excerpt from CITY UNDER SIEGE

I was practically kneeling in front of the screen as I tried to understand what I was seeing. Men were shouting at one another, though their words were indecipherable.

The person filming darted out from behind a shipping container to take more shots. Everything was happening so fast, the camera moving wildly with the person it was attached to. Finally, I realised it was a body cam by the way it was flailing and jerking all over the place. I had no idea what shipyard they were in, but it made sense that the assault would be there rather than a boat. They would have wanted to take the terrorists after the handover happened, just to be sure.

A soldier came into shot across the way, crouched behind another container, and I guessed he was one of ours. Covered from head to toe, it was impossible to know who it was, but I held my breath anyway. The camera at least became steady as the gunfire slowly ebbed, though focused now on the last of the targets. In the periphery of the screen, the kneeling soldier leant further forward to take a shot when he was yanked sharply backwards in a move that literally saved his life. As the last shot rang out, sounding a death knell to the terrorists who’d been responsible for taking so many innocent civilian lives, the rest of the team seemed to realise what I already knew. The rescuer, the guardian angel who’d ripped his teammate away from the path of certain death, had exposed himself to make the ultimate sacrifice, saving his friend’s life at the expense of his own. Soldiers darted in front of the camera again, and a few more indistinguishable voices called out before the silence. The excruciating, insufferable, tormenting silence, broken only by the clear voice that cut through the darkness like a scythe, ripping a hole through my heart as it did.

“Man down.”

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?

The answer is complicated because I write in two different genres. The first is sci-fi and for that I would want to take a rocket-shuttle to the International Space Station and experience outer space for myself, including the weightlessness and being able to look down at planet Earth.

Of course, that's not going to happen. But I can dream. I can fantasize.

And as long as I am fantasizing about taking a mega-billion dollar trip into space, I would love to hitch a ride on the probes to comets and the other planets of our solar system. If available, I would want to book a passage to Mars. I would like to be part of a new moon landing if NASA ever schedules one. Then there are the wonders of the entire solar system to tempt me.

I'll even admit I'm a closet Star Trek fan. One of my favorite Star Trek episodes (the original series) was V'ger, when the Enterprise encountered the Voyager returning to Earth to find its creator.

My second genre is medieval and so I would like to time travel not only to England but do a world tour. I'd like to be the romance Marco Polo of my genre. Okay, so H. G. Well's time machine is probably locked away in Area 51 with all the other alien and scientific relics but wouldn't it be grand to see the Old World, the Old Countries?

If you had your choice of going back in history, where would you go and what would be the era?

About the book:

A first draft holds the possibility of what will be a great story. Revision turns that rough diamond into a spectacular gem worth a reader's money and time.

Writers are individuals but to be a producing writer means creating a system to revise and polish a work so the reader thoroughly enjoys the story. REVISION IS A PROCESS is a guidebook for writers and authors that shows how a simple 12-step process can be tailored to eliminate the most common and chronic maladies of writing genre fiction. This valuable guidebook contains secrets, tips, practical advice, how-to's, and why-to's for taking the frustration out of self-editing.

EXCERPT

From Section 9 - Said is not Dead

One of the most controversial aspects of writing dialogue is the use of said as a speech tag. Some think using said is pedestrian and boring, others pepper every line of dialogue with said for fear the reader won't know who is speaking. The fact is that said is nearly invisible to a reader. However, overuse is a common problem, so delete as many as possible without jeopardizing clarity or use beats. (Revisit the Oubliette example on the previous page. Said was not used. Beats were.)

In your review to minimize using said, watch for LY or ING ending speech tags like: "Drop dead," she said dramatically. That tells (and does so poorly). Instead show with a beat: "Drop dead." The anger in her voice was unmistakable. You should avoid such tags as "Of course," he said knowingly (which has an ING and an LY). You may catch the LY and ING tags in the passivity check, which is discussed in Section 11. However, don't mistake the ING words when they're necessary, such as "Oh, that dialogue speech tag has a participle added to it," Marsha said, squinting at the underlined word on the page.

Yes, that's right, squinting is part of a participle phrase, which can be useful in speech tags.

Samuel Morrow, the kind man who has run Morrow's Jewelers for over twenty years, is found murdered in an apparent break-in, and there's no shortage of suspects who may have had a reason to kill him. Oddly enough, something very valuable to Poppy and Alex is missing from his store too. Is the theft connected to the murder?

As they hunt for Samuel's killer, carefully eliminating suspect after suspect, they must juggle cake tastings and reception planning, as all the while someone's watching their favorite amateur sleuth. Will Poppy and Alex solve the case and reach the altar, or will the killer make their ever after far less than happy?

When the demon appeared, Randall Webber nearly jumped out of his skin. He was an experienced magickian, but the appearance of an infernal dignitary is never a commonplace event, and it shook him every time. He knew that if he stepped even momentarily outside the circle he had painstakingly burned onto his hardwood floor the demon would be at his throat, and in an instant would separate his soul from his body and devour it—or worse.

Webber mustered his courage and put on his best poker face. He was in control here, he told himself. He was the magickian. He called the shots. He commanded the hosts of Hell. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and upper lip and then put his hand in his back pocket to stop it from shaking.

The demon did not speak but appeared in the form of a dragon. It hovered as an image cast upon a small paper triangle about the size of Webber’s fist, set safely outside the circle on an end table. The dragon uncoiled its tail in slow motion, gold-flecked pupils staring straight into Webber’s own. Webber gulped and willed his voice not to waver as he spoke.

“Greetings, noble Articiphus, commander of many mighty hosts, Duke of Hell. I acknowledge thee and bid thee welcome. I command thee by the holy Tetragrammaton to assume thy human form and speak with me!”

So far, so good, Webber thought. He was still in one piece; the demon was still constrained within the folded paper triangle, and he thought he had just given a flawless performance of a man in command of himself. He fought the urge to run through his mental checklist to make sure he had not forgotten anything. One missing link and the whole house of cards would come tumbling down and he would be demon chow. He fought the urge. He had been careful, and if he had missed anything it was too late now to do anything about it. Right now, he needed to focus.

The triangle shimmered, and a regal-looking gentleman hovered in it dressed in ermine and satin. One half of his face was serene, the other horribly scarred. A diadem sat upon his head, and his face bore a resentful scowl. Nobody likes to be told what to do, Randall thought, least of all a man of power—or a being of power.

“Hail, Articiphus, Duke of—”

The demon interrupted him impatiently. “Cut the shit, Magickian. What do you want?”

Randall’s eyes widened. He pushed a lock of long brown hair out of his eyes and consciously straightened his perpetually stooped shoulders. He was expecting the typical exchange of ritual pleasantries, a ping-pong volley of testy manners conducted in Elizabethan English, but he had never summoned this particular spirit before. This one, apparently, had no time—or patience—for small talk. Very well, Randall thought, let’s just cut to the chase. “Is it true, noble Duke, that you have the power to remove souls and put them in other bodies?”

Whether the demon’s voice was audible or whether it merely resonated in his mind, Randall couldn’t tell. It had an odd quality about it as if Randall were wearing headphones. There was no resonance in the room, so it was hard to tell. He dismissed the thought as irrelevant and willed himself once more to focus. The words were clear, regardless of their source. The big question had just been asked. And for a demon in a hurry to be rid of this pest of a human, Articiphus was certainly taking his time replying.

The demon’s eyes narrowed, and he looked like he was trying to stare past the magickian. Randall stole a glance behind him, but there was nothing. Out the window he could see drizzle swirling around a streetlamp, forming wispy ghosts that, he prayed, were neither conscious nor malevolent. In this business, however, one could never be sure.
Randall shifted nervously, noting that the meat of his thigh seemed to have gone numb. He slapped it with the flat of his hand. “What say you, noble Duke?” he called, with a note of impatience.

“I. Can.” The demon let the two words drop like ice. He squinted at the magickian. “You want to share a body with another soul.” He spoke it as a statement, but a raised eyebrow indicated that it was more of a question of clarification.

“No. I want to trade bodies.”

Randall saw the demon nodding, understanding. “Man or woman?” he asked.

“Neither one,” Randall said. He forced all the air he could into his lungs, expanding them as far as they would go given the acrid sting of the incense that hung as thick in the air of the apartment as the fog outside. “The being I want to swap bodies with is…not human.”

The demon opened his mouth to speak but then closed it again, furrowing his brows instead.

“Oh yeah,” Randall added. “When I go, I need to take this with me.” And he held forth a purplish-green fruit.

“What are you going to do with an avocado?” asked the demon, now truly curious.

Suddenly, Webber was not nervous at all. He knew what he had to do, and he knew he had the means at hand to do it. He didn’t answer the demon but only smiled.

J.R. Mabry roams the earth like the ghost of Jacob Marley, searching for the perfect omelet pan. He writes thoughtful urban fantasy and science fiction. When not haunting high-end cooking stores, he lives with his wife and three dogs in Oakland, CA. He is allergic to coffee, tea, and alcohol, and for this reason the hills resound with his lamentation. He is also generally a cheery guy.

Check out the relaunch of The Kingdom, out now from Apocryphile Press. The relaunched The Power will be out next month, followed by the all-new The Glory—also known as the Berkeley Blackfriars series. The Berkeley Blackfriars aren’t your ordinary priests—they curse like longshoremen and aren’t above the occasional spliff or one-night-stand. But if you’ve got a nasty demon on your ass, they’re exactly the guys you want in your corner.

Excerpt

“I wish you could see yourself through my eyes. Then you’d know I’m so glad you’re mine. That I love you just the way you are.”

“How can you still want to be with me? I lied to you.”

“I know, but I understand why you did.”

“And you’re not mad?”

“I wish you would have trusted me enough to tell me the truth, but I’m not mad,” Natalie assured him. “I can’t really blame you for being afraid to tell me when your own parents rejected you.”

Nate frowned. “How do you know that?”

“Until tonight, the only thing you’ve ever said about them is you don’t really talk to them.”

“Yeah, they didn’t understand. When I left, they told me not to come back until I could be the daughter they deserved.”

“If they can’t see how great you are, they don’t deserve you. Lucky for me, I can see it.”

“Are you sure about this, Natalie? Sure about being with me?”

“Nate, you are the sweetest man I know. You’re smart and funny and easy to talk to and we have so much fun together. You treat me like a person and not an accessory. Why would I give all of that up just because you weren’t born in the right body?”

“You can’t be real,” Nate whispered.

“Does this feel real?” Leaning forward, she pressed her lips to his.

Nate’s mind may have been conflicted, but his body was quick to respond. There wasn’t any hesitation or doubt in his kiss.
