Release Day Blitz & Giveaway for Assignment Danger by Rebecca York

Assignment Danger
by Rebecca York
Series: Off-World, #4
Genre: Paranormal Science Fiction
Release Date: January 26, 2015

Jack Younger agrees to risk his life when he takes on a dangerous undercover assignment. He doesn’t count on his old love, Sophia DeAngelo ending up in the middle of the action. What if he has to choose between fulfilling his mission and saving her life?

Jack flew across the floor, grabbing Sophia and dragging her back into the room. But she didn't go quietly.

As soon as she landed on the rough boards, her leg shot out, and her foot connected with his kneecap.

He struggled not to cry out in pain and clue in the men downstairs that something unplanned was going on up here. He pulled Sophia to the floor, where she wrenched herself away and pressed her back against the wall, her legs pulled up, ready to kick him again if he came near her. He feigned toward her, then leaped back, catching her with her legs straight out and throwing himself on top of her.

She scratched at his face and arms, and if he hadn't cared what happened to her, he could have beaten the tar out of her. But he was trying his damnedest to keep from hurting her while keeping her from doing him serious damage.

Even when he pressed her to the floor, she kept fighting, trying to kick and scratch him again.

“For Fate’s sake, stop it, Sophia.”

But it seemed that desperation kept her from listening.

Panting, he clamped his arms around her torso. His fingers twined around her wrists; his legs pressed hers inward.

Still she tried to heave him off as he lay on top of her, breathing hard, his arms and face bleeding and his knee throbbing.

“Stop,” he ordered, all too aware of her body under his. He’d left the room to put some distance between them. Now he felt her breasts pressing against his chest, the womanly curve of her hips. His cock nestled in the valley between her thighs. He’d vowed not to touch her up here. Too bad her gyrations sent fire burning through him.

“If you keep fighting me, I’ll have to knock you out,” he growled.

She shot him a poisonous look, but at least she stopped her efforts to disable him.

“Sophia, for Fates’ sake, I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You could have let me go when we were still in Port City.”

“You know that was impossible. They weren't going to leave a witness alive.”
“They still can’t, can they?”

“No.”

“Then what are you planning?”

“You’re not making it easy to plan anything. I need your cooperation.”

“I’d give my cooperation to Jake Bolton. How can I trust Jack Younger?”

He dragged in a breath and let it out, still trying not to jeopardize his assignment. In frustration, he bit out, “Sophia, what in Hades do you want me to do?”

Her voice was hard and her words direct. “You could stop lying to me.”

He closed his eyes, caught in a trap of his own making. He had tried to play this by the rules as he knew them, but it wasn't working. Not with Sophia.

“All right, I’m a Federation agent. On an undercover assignment.”

She laughed. “Nice try.”

“You asked for the truth. That is the truth. The men downstairs are terrorists trying to overthrow the government. And if they find out I’m a lawman, we’re both going into a sucking sandpit in the swamp. That’s why I couldn't say anything to you. You had to stay scared of me.”

He raised his head again, his eyes locking with hers.

“They said you were on Ameti,” she whispered.

“Yeah. To get a confession from another inmate. I thought I was done with playing criminal, but my boss thought my cover was too good to drop.” His harsh laugh pressed his body more painfully to hers.

“That’s quite a story.”

“It’s the truth. I hope you believe it, because I've had all I can take of holding you down.”

Making a decision that he prayed wasn't fatal, he let go of her hands and rolled to his back where he lay on the floor, staring up at the water-stained ceiling as he waited to find out what she would do now.

Long seconds ticked by before she sat up, staring down at him as though she still couldn't decide what to believe.

He lay where he was, his breath frozen in his lungs hoping she could shift a hundred and eighty degrees in her thinking—from Jack Younger scumbag to Jack Younger Federation agent.

When she sat up and lifted her hand toward his face, his body prepared for fight or flight.

Excerpt

The clack of Emily Taylor's high heels echoed hollowly in the deserted high school hallway. Normally, she loved the sound her heels made on the tile floor. Her obsession with high heels began when her height topped off at a gargantuan five foot one inch, and their authoritative tapping sound typically made her feel confident and in charge. But not this morning. The click-clack reverberating off the rows of metal lockers seemed ominous, a warning of some kind.

Letting herself into her classroom, she decided that the school seemed somewhat sinister because she was unused to being there that early. Her great love affair with her snooze button meant that getting to school before it was filled with a mass of hormone-fueled teenagers was a rarity for her, but she had needed to get in early today in order to prep for a special before-school meeting with a student's mother. Stevie Davis was new to Ellington High and was really struggling in Emily's junior-level English class.

Something about Stevie tugged at Emily. He usually hid his eyes behind his fringe of bangs, causing Emily to fight the urge to grab her scissors and hack away at his curtain of hair so that she could see what was going on behind it. The few times he had tossed his hair back with the irritated shrug that was his typical answer to any question, his eyes had seemed sad, lost, or…something. Emily wasn't sure what that something was, but she was hoping that this meeting with his mother would shed some light on his issues.

Her cantankerous old computer whined to life as Emily flipped on her desk light. Dark, swollen clouds crowded the sky, swallowing her early morning classroom in shadows. Emily felt jumpy and spooked, as if those dark clouds were pressing down on her, enshrouding her in their gloom. Must be an allergy medicine-induced hangover making her feel strange this morning. Nothing like fall to get her sinuses going. As soon as she got her notes together for her meeting, she'd grab a cold shot of caffeine from the stash of sodas she kept in the teachers' lounge fridge. That would help clear her head. Or at least it would if Tad, the conference-hour-sharing, next-door math teacher and fellow soda junkie, hadn't depleted her supply.

As she pulled out samples of Stevie's writing and wrestled her computer into spitting out a copy of his grade report, the lights flickered. Glancing out the back wall of windows, Emily watched the increasing wind whip the trees into a frenzy. Multicolored fall leaves rained down like confetti. She usually loved the electric feel in the air before a good thunderstorm, but a loss of power would ruin her day's plans. Figuring she better make her copies before the ancient, temperamental copy machine went on the fritz, she began sorting through the piles on her desk for the paper she needed. They were organized piles, of course. Oh, who was she kidding? Trying to find the one thing she needed on her messy desk was like trying to isolate a single snowflake during a blizzard. Shuffling papers and files, Emily jumped at the first boom of thunder. The accompanying flash of lightning happened to spotlight the copy of the quiz for which she was searching. Hoping to entice Stevie into becoming more involved in class discussions, she was starting a unit on mythology since he had shown some interest in legends. Today's quiz was over the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, or it would be if she got her copies made in time.

Tucking all of her information for the meeting with Stevie's mother into a stray file folder, Emily grabbed up a fresh legal pad and pen and headed out the door. Halfway there, she turned on her heel to go back for the quiz she needed to copy. Yep, she definitely needed that soda. A glance at her vintage Strawberry Shortcake watch showed she was, as usual, cutting it close on time. But first things first.

Popping the top on the last soda in the fridge, Emily silently thanked whoever was the God of caffeine for their nectar as she took her first icy sip of the sugar-laden soda. No diet drinks for her, no sir, as the extra ten pounds on her hips could attest. Tad had tried to hide the last can behind a pitcher of green tea, knowing Emily would never touch that, even if it might benefit her hips. She, however, was on to his nefarious ways. Practicing her evil victory laugh, she click-clacked her way to the copy room to get her copies started before the meeting. Another crashing boom of thunder rattled the windows as Emily threw the door wide, propping it open with those cursed hips while she flipped the light switch.
Nothing.

Scanning the hallway confirmed her suspicions. The power was out. She took a step backward, thinking she would head downstairs to consult with Principal Matthews. Rain began to lash the windows over the stairwell, making the darkness of the hall seem even more complete. She fumbled her way a few feet down the hallway until the lights flickered back on again. Not wanting to waste a second in case the power decided to blink off again, Emily dashed back to the partially open copy room door. Hitting the light switch again with one hand, she rushed toward the hulking machine on the far wall. That was when papers went flying and sticky, syrupy soda sprayed everything in its path. Emily went airborne. Throwing her hands out in front of her to break her fall, Emily winced as they skidded through sticky wetness. The picture of grace she was not, so finding herself flat on her face was actually not uncommon for Emily. She could trip on a completely flat surface.

The lights flickered again as she clambered to her feet, worrying about getting the sticky mess cleaned up before someone else slipped. Glancing down at her hands, she was busy cursing her lost lifeline, her last caffeine hit, when she realized that the sticky substance covering her hands was not soda. It was something thicker, and redder. Finally looking back to see what she had tripped over, Emily saw what appeared to be a head protruding from behind an office chair. Taking a cautious step closer, she could see that the head was surrounded by what looked like a puddle of congealing blood and was, thankfully, attached to a body. Unfortunately, it appeared to be a dead body. And that's when Emily began to scream and scream.

About the Author:
Tracy Comstock is a small-town girl from Missouri. She lives in a home where she is outnumbered 3:1 by the males in her life: her husband and their two extremely adorable, but terrifyingly ornery sons. She has no pets as all living things, besides humans, of course, come to her house to die, including the victims in her books. All her life Tracy devoured books. Her parents' most effective punishment was grounding her from reading. Although she has a B.S. in Education and a Masters in Literature, she was nudged down the path to publication by encouraging (and sometimes threatening!) family, friends, professors, and students. When not working on Emily's adventures, Tracy is an adjunct instructor for several local colleges, where she gets to teach others about her greatest passion: writing.

A teacher who usually gets to school barely ahead of her students, Emily Taylor arrives early for a parent-teacher meeting for a struggling student.  Realizing she’s got plenty of time to make copies of a quiz she’s planning to give her students, and that a thunder storm has begun, Emily walks down the hall to the copy room.  A room where the lights are out, and where she trips over something on the floor.  Something that turns out to be the dead body of the football coach.  So begins Murder Is Our Mascot by Tracy Comstock, the first book in her Schooled in Murder series.  Filled with colorful characters, snappy dialogue, a touch of humor and some light romance, Ms. Comstock’s book is a great start to a new cozy series.

I easily connected with lead character Emily Taylor; she’s smart, funny and has a unique sense of fashion.  She’s also a menace on the road (as some of the dents on her car can attest), tends to leap before she thinks things thru and has a slight crush on fellow teacher Tad Higginbotham.  A fan of mystery books, Emily is determined to uncover the identity of Coach Layton’s killer, a plan that doesn’t sit well with Tad, her parents, or with the Detective assigned to the case.  I really connected with Emily, she made me laugh and her “investigative” skills are not quite ready for the big time.

Ms. Comstock also does a good job developing the secondary characters and I really enjoyed getting to know Gabby, Emily’s best friend since grade school, Greg, Gabby’s husband, and Tad, who Emily likes.  They are all used to dealing with Emily and her leap first, think later, behavior.  Especially Gabby, who enables and encourages Emily by being her backup investigator.  Meanwhile Tad, who returns Emily’s affection, encourages her to think first and tries to keep her from getting physically hurt.

The mystery is well written and takes several interesting twists and turns.  Especially when the school counselor, and one of Emily’s friends, becomes the chief suspect when she doesn’t show up at school or at her house.  There is also an interesting twist regarding “Coach Layton”, the murder victim.  While I did discover the identity of the killer before it was revealed in the book (I figured it out about 2 or 3 pages ahead of Emily), I thought Ms. Comstock did a good job laying out the clues.

Will Emily uncover the killer’s identity and the whereabouts of her friend before there’s a second victim?  Will Tad and Emily take a risk on becoming more than friends?  You’ll have to read Murder Is Our Mascot to find out.  I loved it and can’t wait to read the next book.

A grisly murder, a church that might be a cult and the mafia all play a part in Devil in the Deadline, the fourth book in A Headlines in Heels Mystery series by LynDee Walker.  Continuing to develop this series, Ms. Walker takes us on a journey through Richmond as the characters try solving a murder involving homeless youth.  While a part of a series, this book can be enjoyed on its own.

An experienced reporter, Nichelle Clarke is not surprised to be called to a crime scene while dressed for a party.  A gruesome scene filled with lots of blood and the body of a young homeless woman.  Offered an exclusive by Richmond Police Department Spokesman Aaron White, Nichelle agrees to interview some homeless witnesses for the police.  He thinks she’ll have a better chance of getting them to talk because the homeless don’t always trust the police.    What begins as an investigation into the death of one woman soon becomes more complicated when Nichelle’s personal life and her work end up in a tangle and discovering the truth could cost Nichelle her life.

Ms. Walker does a good job continuing to develop Nichelle’s character; smart, ambitious and determined to get the scoop first, she’s also got good ethics when it comes to her job and sincerely cares for others.  While her professional life is fairly under control, Nichelle’s love life is a lot more complicated.  Involved with two very different men, she’s having a hard time making a choice.  Especially since one is an ATF agent and the other is involved with the mob.  While she’s got plenty of angst on the romantic front, Nichelle also has family issues she’s been ignoring for some time, which she’ll have to deal with because of a possible connection to the case she’s investigating.

The secondary characters are well developed and I enjoyed getting to see Nichelle interact with her co-workers.  Especially since her ongoing “battle” with Shelby takes an interesting turn because of this case.  I especially enjoyed that Nichelle’s mom made a real appearance in this book, and that she is forced to tell Nichelle the truth about her birth.

The mystery is well developed and takes several interesting twists and turns.  The police don’t know if they are dealing with a serial killer or if it’s just a one-time kill for personal reasons.  There are also ritualistic patterns they can’t ignore which could induce a panic by the public if they don't handle things right.  Nichelle does a good job investigating for her daily story and she’s the one who really seems to make all of the important discoveries – it’s like she’s got an extra sense about these things, you know like a "crime whisperer".

Will Nichelle discover the identity of the killer before she becomes his next victim?  And just how are a televangelist and the members of his church connected to the mob?  You’ll have to read Devil in the Deadline to find out.  I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read Nichelle’s next adventure.

A Jules Landau Mystery, Book 2

Release Date: January 6, 2015
Genre: Crime Thriller/Private Eye

About the book:

In the vein of Robert Crais’s fast-paced novels, Marc Krulewitch’s new Jules Landau mystery tells the action-packed tale of the private eye trying to keep his hands clean as he digs through Chicago’s dirtiest secrets.

Jules Landau feels right at home in the ethnic stew of the Windy City, where he’s indebted to the hopes and schemes of his criminal ancestors. Street-smart and college-educated, Jules wants nothing more than to go straight and atone for his family’s past. But when he investigates a horrific killing, Jules uncovers a hidden world of lucrative corruption.

Jack Gelashvili had his head bashed in and no one knows why. The most obvious answer is that he was a parking cop, a universally loathed job—especially in Chicago. Turns out there’s a lot of money to be made on expired meters, and when Jules starts making noise, he starts making enemies—from the head of a media empire to the mastermind of a prostitution ring.

When rumors of bloodthirsty Mob connections arise, Jack’s gorgeous cousin Tamar objects, and Jules is increasingly swayed by the logic and charms of the sexy baker. Following this beautiful woman into the cloistered world of Georgian immigrants, Jules brings his hunches, his family connections, and his gun. But he’s just one man against a pack of criminals with a million reasons to shoot first…

About Marc Krulewitch

Marc Krulewitch’s Jules Landau mysteries take place in Chicago, where he was born and where his family has lived for generations. He now resides in Colorado.

Chicago.  The Windy City.  A city on a lake known for the White Sox, The Cubs, and other sporting clubs.  Also known for its ties to organized crime, corrupt police, high crime rates and lots of immigrants.  Such is the setting for Marc Krulewitch’s newest Jules Landau Mystery, Windy City Blues.  Filled with colorful characters, adult dialogue and plenty of action, this story grabbed my attention from the very first page and never let go.  Fans of crime thrillers and mysteries alike will enjoy sinking their teeth into this series.

When the grisly murder of a parking cop received little attention from the press or the police, private investigator Jules Landau is hired by a concerned citizen to uncover the truth.  While no one likes the meter cops, why would someone bash Jack (Bagrat) Gelashvili’s skull in and leave his body to be discovered by a toddler?  Determined to uncover the truth, Jules finds himself with the toughest case of his career.  Realizing money is the root of all evil, or the main reason behind almost all crime in Chicago, Jules uncovers a web of corruption, prostitution and organized crime.  Strapping on his .40 caliber, Jules faces off against a group of criminals who would rather shoot first and ask questions later.

Mr. Krulewitch does an excellent job developing Jules character; a member of a family with ties to political corruption, Jules is determined to atone for his family’s previous behavior.  Smart and well educated, he’s still somewhat green when it comes to running an investigation and makes some “rookie” mistakes.  Mistakes with deadly consequences. Mr. Krulewitch also does a good job developing the secondary characters and I really enjoyed getting to know Sid “Frownie” Frownstein, Jules 90 year old mentor dying from cancer, and Tamar, “Jack’s” cousin, who Jules finds very attractive.

The mystery is well written and takes several twists and turns.  When Jules begins to realize how much money is at the root of the crime, and begins asking the right questions, he starts making enemies.  Enemies with money, power and ties to organized crime.  A world Jules is trying to avoid.

Will Jules discover who killed Jack and why?  Will his trust and attraction to Tamar get in the way of his investigation and endanger his life?  You’ll have to read Windy City Blues to find out.  I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next book in this series.

About the book:

**Now in development for a TV movie!**

For Franki Amato, life in New Orleans is anything but “The Big Easy.” When she met handsome bank executive Bradley Hartmann, she knew she’d finally found a man she could trust. But she can’t say the same for his sexy new secretary, who is about as trustworthy as Mata Hari and every bit as seductive. Meanwhile, Franki’s best friend and employer, Veronica Maggio, has named her the lead investigator in the murder of a gorgeous cosmetics CEO who was found lying dead in the master bedroom of a historic plantation home.

Now the pressure is on Franki to figure out what a bottle of pink lip gloss and the legend of a pink diamond have to do with the bizarre killing. The problem is that the plantation is notorious for being haunted, and Franki is less than enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting a ghost. Adding to her stress, her Sicilian grandma is up to her usual meddling antics—this time planning Franki’s engagement to Bradley before he’s even considered popping the question. As Bradley grows distant and plantation employees begin dropping like Southern belles during a sweltering summer, Franki turns to a psychic with a phobia of ghosts to solve the mysterious murders and her own relationship fears.

About Traci Andrighetti
Traci Andrighetti is the author of the Franki Amato Mysteries. In her previous life, she was an award-winning literary translator and a Lecturer of Italian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics. But then she got wise and ditched that academic stuff for a life of crime–writing, that is.

If she’s not hard at work on her next novel, Traci is probably watching her favorite Italian soap opera, eating Tex Mex or sampling fruity cocktails, and maybe all at the same time. She lives in Austin with her husband, young son (who desperately wants to be in one of her books) and three treat-addicted dogs.

Colorful characters, antebellum mansions and life in the Big Easy take center stage in Prosecco Pink, Traci Andrighetti’s newest addition to the Franki Amato Mystery series.  Picking up shortly where the first book, Limoncello Yellow, left off, we find Franki knee deep in mud and fending off alligators while keeping an eye on Bradley Hartmann, new boyfriend and bank executive.  When Franki’s boss, and best friend, Veronica Maggio puts her in charge of solving the murder of a cosmetics CEO, Franki finds herself on a haunted plantation fending off ghosts and trying to solve a crime involving pink lip gloss and employees dropping like flies.

Ms. Andrighetti does a good job continuing to develop characters in this series; while Franki is a little bit odd, she’s a fun character who always gets herself in outrageous situations and you can’t help but like her.  She also has an obsession with eating and food, something I can relate to.  I also enjoyed how Ms. Andrighetti continues to develop the secondary characters in this series; especially Nonna, Franki’s matchmaking grandma and Glenda, Frank’s sixty something landlady, who has some of the best dialogue in the entire book.

While Franki’s love life with Bradley should be stable and secure; we see Franki’s insecurity kicked into high gear because of his new sexy secretary.  While she swears she trusts Brad, she admits she just can’t trust a secretary who’s too perfect to be true.  While dealing with her emotional issues, Franki refuses to deal with a haunted mansion and hires Chandra, a medium, to deal with the ghost.  Only this being Franki, she’s hired a medium who’s afraid of ghosts.  Fortunately they do find a way to work together and I really enjoyed meeting Chandra.

Will Franki discover who killed the CEO and what the pink lip gloss and legend of the pink diamond have to do with her case?  Will Franki’s Nonna and her romantic meddling send Bradley running for cover?  You’ll have to read Prosecco Pink to find out.  I enjoyed it and look forward to reading Franki’s next case.

Here she shares some of the inspiration behind her central character, Chief of Police Nico Sirsky.

When an author chooses a hero in a novel, it is hard to distinguish what in that character comes from the author’s own life and what comes from other sources. What I can say is that I wanted the main character in the Paris Homicide series to head up the Paris Criminal Investigation Division. That became clear to me the day I met the actual man in that position, who necessarily inspired the character.

As a woman, writing a male character allows me to come across a little bit more incognito in the novels: nobody ever asks what I as a woman have in common with my male character. He could possibly be a woman’s ideal man, a man who understands woman as they are. I would add that he is also a little bit of a superhero, as I’ve always loved comic-book superheros.

I will also admit that when I wrote The 7th Woman, the first in the series, I had no idea I was starting a series. But when the book was a runaway bestseller in France, my readers asked for more about the characters, as if Nico Sirsky and his team were real, flesh and blood cops. It was incredible for me as a writer, and I set out to write the second in the series, Crossing the Line, and then the third, The City of Blood.

Today, Nico is part of my life and I’m happy about that. I hope that the adventure will continue for a long time, as long as readers are happy to read about Nico’s life and his investigations.

About the book:

When a major Parisian modern art event gets unexpected attention on live TV, Chief of Police Nico Sirsky and his team of elite crime fighters rush to La Villette park and museum complex. There, renowned artist Samuel Cassian is inaugurating the first archeological dig of modern art, twenty-seven years after burying the leftovers of a banquet.

In front of reporters from around the world, excavators uncover a skeleton. Could it be the artist’s own son? And does that death have anything to do with the current string of nightclub murders by the “Paris Butcher”?

On the site of the French capital’s former slaughterhouses, the investigation takes Nico and France’s top criminal investigation division from artists’ studios to autopsy theaters and nightclubs in hopes of tracking down the murderer who has turned this Paris park into a city of blood.

Secrets; we all have them.  Some are harmless, some might hurt others and some can get you killed.   The City of Blood, the third instalment in the Paris Homicide series, begins with the alarming discovery of a body buried within a famous artist’s time capsule.  A discovery that places Chief of Police, Nico Sirsky, and his Le Crim investigative team in front of the media once again.  Further developing the characters in her series, author Frederique Molay gives us another thrilling adventure as Nico tracks down a killer who has already killed once and begins killing again.

At the height of his career, performance artist Samuel Cassian hosted a dinner party at La Villette, a park in Paris.  His plan was to bury the remains of the party as a sort of time capsule to see how consumerism, and his art, would be viewed in the future.  Thirty years later as he and other important members of the French art world dig up the “artistic event”, a body is discovered among the remains.  As Nico and his team begin uncovering clues, a new set of murders begin occurring at the park and it becomes apparent the crimes are somehow connected.  Will Nico and his team be able to discover the identity of the “Paris Butcher”, as he or she has come to be called, before the body count gets out of control?

Ms. Molay does a fantastic job continuing to develop her characters; Nico is quite simply divine! He’s smart, sexy as all get out (just read the scene in the night club), a great dad and an incredible cop.  He’s also human and does have some flaws; he can become over emotional, he has a somewhat complicated personal life and he’s used to being in charge.  I really love this character and if he was real, I’d be headed to France so I could handcuff him to my side.  Ms. Molay also does a good job developing his team and I enjoyed getting to know what they experienced as they worked on this new case.

Ms. Molay always adds an additional element to her stories, which I personally enjoy, by giving Nico a personal issue on the side.  In this instalment we get to watch Nico, his sister Tanya, and Caroline, the woman in Nico’s life, as they deal with Anya’s, Nico’s mom, health.  We also get to spend a little bit of time with Dimitri, Nico’s teenaged son and learn a little bit about what it’s like in Paris hospital.

Will Nico and his team be able to solve a “cold” case that’s thirty years old?  Are the new murders really tied to the past or is the killer just advantage of a unique situation?  You’ll have to read The City of Blood to find out.  I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read what Ms. Molay writes for us next.
