Book Beginnings & Friday 56 - #99

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

A Is For Alibi (Kinsey Millhone, Book 1) by Sue Grafton

My name is Kinsey Millhone.  I’m a private investigator, licensed by the state of California.
My Thoughts:  I have never read a book by Ms.Grafton and as she recently passed, and I enjoy mysteries - a lot - I decided it was time to give one of her books a try.  While not much is happening as of yet, I like how she introduces the character, name, profession and location, right off the start.

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice on every Friday.

To Play along here are the Rules:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your post below.
*Don’t forget to add your post URL (not your blog url) at Freda’s Voice.
*It's that simple.

My 56: also from (A Is For Alibi by Sue Grafton) at about the 56% Kindle location:

I’m crazy about “before-and-after” shots, an avid fan of all those magazine ads showing women pumped up like tires and then magically thin, one foot arranged in front of the other, as though weight loss also involved the up-surge of charm and modeling skills.  I wondered if there was anyone left in California not obsessed with self-image.

My Thoughts:  I haven’t gotten this far into the book but I have to agree that I like this comment/observation by the character a lot - I think our whole country is obsessed with self-image.

So what do you think?  Would you keep reading? Do the teasers tempt you?  Don’t forget to leave your link below and to link up at Freda’s Voice

About A Is For Alibi (Kinsey Millhone, Book 1) by Sue Grafton

 A IS FOR AVENGER
A tough-talking former cop, private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa, California. A twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments, she's got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes.

A IS FOR ACCUSED
That's why she draws desperate clients like Nikki Fife. Eight years ago, she was convicted of killing her philandering husband. Now she's out on parole and needs Kinsey's help to find the real killer. But after all this time, clearing Nikki's bad name won't be easy.

A IS FOR ALIBI
If there's one thing that makes Kinsey Millhone feel alive, it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer--and sharper--than she imagined.

Don't forget to post your meme's and link up at both host locations.

Have a great Friday!

  4. I began this series years ago and then, somehow, drifted away. I'm not sure what letter I got to. I would like to finish the series someday. I'm spotlighting Year One by Nora Roberts. Happy reading!

  5. I read a number of these years ago and it's a series that I'd really love to go back and start over from the beginning. I was so sad to hear of Grafton's death.

  6. I loved this series, and I thought I had read them all...but after she passed, I went through the list and found some in the middle that I'd missed. I will happily grab some of them. Thanks for sharing, and enjoy. Here's mine: “PROMISE NOT TO TELL”

  10. I like the beginning and I love the teaser. I've never read SG's books because I think they are too scary for me.

Next week will be your 100th BBOF and F56 post! Wow! We should celebrate. I don't often get time to comment, but I appreciate that you have been taking part for so long.
