It’s All About the Setting by Kathi Daly

I currently write five series. With four of the series the concept for the books began with a character that I wanted to write. The lone exception to this is the Tj Jensen Paradise Lake series where the concept began with a place. Lake Tahoe to be exact. I have lived in Lake Tahoe most of my life, and although I have visited every one of the fifty US states, I have never found another place where I’d rather live than my cozy small town nestled right on a lake. For me Tahoe provides the perfect lifestyle. There are hundreds of miles of forest right out my back door, an abundance of wildlife who visit my yard on a daily basis, outdoor sports such as hiking and biking in the summer, and of course skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

This mama and cub visited us a couple of summers ago. We get a lot of bears in our yard as our property is bordered on all sides by national forest but I can’t help but love this photo where both mom and baby posed so perfectly while my husband snapped the photo. When I sat down to write the Tj Jensen series I wanted to bring mountain living to my readers so I decided to have Tj live on a lakeside resort, where there were both abundant summer and winter activities. The scenery surrounding the small town of Serenity Nevada, as well as the resort perched on the shoreline of Paradise Lake, is as much an integral part of the series as the characters readers have grown to love.

I have found that readers love sharing the ever changing seasons with Tj. The books set in the summer detail the beach, lake, and near perfect weather, while the books set in the winter tend to focus on the coziness of a crackling fire as the snow covers the landscape. While I love all of the seasons, fall is by far my favorite season. I love the colorful blanket of reds, yellows, and oranges that cover the mountains. I love the cool crisp days and even cooler nights spent snuggled up with my dog and husband as I read my favorite mystery novel. And while fall is my favorite season, like Tj, I love to spend as much time on the water as I can during the warmer months of July and August.

If you are the type of reader who loves to be transported to a place, I think you will love the Tj Jensen series. I love sharing the small town where I grew up with readers who share my love of woodsy interiors, warm and cozy fires, colorful seasons, abundant wildlife, and long and solitary walks through the forest where the only sound you hear is the sound of your own breath.
