A teenage runaway, a second chance romance and an escape to Paris all take center stage in author Paulita Kincer’s newest novel, Paris RunAway.  Colorful characters, the beauty of Paris, even with their current political (terrorism) troubles, and good first person narration make this an enjoyable story.  If you’ve ever thought of running away, but don’t quite have the freedom to do so, you’ll want to pick up a copy of this book – you can escape for a couple of hours. 

Ms. Kincer does a good job introducing her primary character, Sadie Ford, right from the start.  A fifty year old single mother to two daughters, Sadie has been living life one day at a time since her divorce two years ago.  Putting her own life on hold, Sadie just wants to get her daughters off to college and started on their own life journeys.  With her oldest daughter Evangeline finishing her first year of college, she’s down to one daughter at home, Scarlett, a junior in high school.  Telling herself she’s only got 2 more years to go, Sadie, a teacher, looks forward to their summer vacation and just plans to relax.

When Scarlett announces she’s going to spend a couple of weeks at her dad’s house, Sadie takes it in stride and thinks that perhaps her daughter wants to spend time with her somewhat estranged father to heal their fractured relationship. She never imagined her daughter would run off to Paris, after an exchange student she met in school, with her father’s credit card.  Frantic about her daughter’s safety, and desperate to get her back home, Sadie leaps without thinking and takes off to Paris after her daughter.  I liked Sadie’s character a lot; she’s a loving mom, a decent person and responsible.  She’s also in denial about what she herself needs desperately in her own life – sacrificing all for her daughters.  I won’t say she’s perfect, there were a few times I wanted to smack her upside the head, grab her by the shoulders and tell her to “snap out of it”.

The secondary characters are mostly well developed; though I would have liked to have gotten to know Scarlett a little better, to maybe understand why she thought it was okay to leave the country all alone and use her parent’s credit cards to finance her illicit trip.  I would also have liked to have gotten to know “Luc”, the young man Scarlett chased after, to figure out why he was so appealing to a teenage girl.  I did like Auguste Rollande, Luc’s father, quite a bit.  He becomes Sadie’s friend and a fellow parent searching for a child who is not where he is supposed to be.  He also helps Sadie realize she’s still an attractive woman and that she doesn’t have to put her own life on hold as she finishes raising her daughters.  Ms. Kincer’s voice as an author is well established and enjoyable and the story’s pace is fairly even, though the beginning is a bit slow. 

Will Sadie and Auguste be able to locate Scarlett and Luc before they end up in trouble?  How will Sadie deal with her ex-husband as she tracks down her daughter?  And will she go back to Florida or decide to stay in Paris, the City of Light and Love, as she tries to figure out the second half of her life?  You’ll have to read Paris RunAway to find out.  I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Ms. Kincer’s work.
