About the book:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author CJ Lyons. For fans of Lisa Gardner, Tami Hoag, and Jeffery Deaver: "Everything a great thriller should be--action packed, authentic, and intense." ~#1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child

After leaving the FBI, life should be easy, right?   Wrong--not if you're Lucy Guardino.

Lucy has always seen herself as a normal Pittsburgh soccer mom who happened to have a job chasing the worst of the worst. But after a violent predator targets her family and she's injured, Lucy sacrifices her career with the FBI in order to keep her family safe.

What is she now that she's no longer a FBI Special Agent? she wonders as she begins her new job with the Beacon Group, a private consulting firm that specializes in cold cases and bringing justice to forgotten victims.Lucy fears she's traded being a kick-ass law enforcement officer for being a civilian mother hen shepherding a team of amateurs.

Her fears appear justified when she's partnered with TK O'Connor, a former Marine MP struggling with her transition to life back home, and sent to rural Texas to investigate a case that's more than cold, it's already been closed with the killers behind bars for the past twenty-nine years.

But...who really killed Lily Martin, her infant daughter, and husband? Why was an entire family targeted for annihilation? What price will Lucy pay when she fights to expose a truth people will kill to keep buried?

LAST LIGHT is the seventh Lucy Guardino novel, but they can be read out of order. If you enjoy captivating suspense, intelligent storytelling, strong and vulnerable characters, and a freight-train pace, then you'll love this adrenaline rush of a heart-pounding thriller. There’s nothing I love more than an action packed, tightly written, suspenseful mystery and Last Light by C.J. Lyons is all of that plus more.  Taking a well-developed and established character, Lucy Guardino, Ms. Lyons begins a brand new private investigative series, Beacon Falls, focused on unsolved cold cases.  A gifted storyteller, Ms. Lyon’s story grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go.

Ms. Lyons does a wonderful job introducing new readers to former FBI Agent, Lucy Guardino.  Retired from the FBI due to a career ending injury, Lucy has recently accepted a position with The Beacon Group, a consulting firm helping both law enforcement agencies and groups like The Freedom Project with cold cases and cases up for judicial review.  Tasked with turning a group made up of young specialists, with no formal law enforcement training, into a crack investigative team, Lucy is determined to discover who she is without a badge and reinvent herself. I easily connected with and liked Lucy right from the start; she’s everything you would want in an investigator.

Ms. Lyons also does a good job introducing the members of Lucy’s new team; T.K. O’Connor, a former Marine M.P. and the team’s previous sole field investigator, Tom Worth, a former E.R. Doctor and now the team’s forensic specialist, and George Washington “Wash” Gamble, a former hacker and now the team’s specialist.  While each member is talented in their own field, their interaction as a team is something Lucy will have to help them develop.  In this particular installment, T.K. is more of a focus since she’s physically on site with Lucy during their investigation.  I liked all three members of the team and really enjoyed getting to know T.K., she’s definitely someone you want watching your back.

Sent to rural Texas, Lucy and her team are assigned an investigation for The Freedom Project into a case that was closed 29 years ago and put two men behind bars.  Transitioning between the past and the present, Ms. Lyons gives the reader insight into what happened to Lily Martin and her family as they were murdered in their home.  Told in first person, mostly via Lucy, we get to experience their discoveries of a case that is different than everything they’ve been told.  Ms. Lyons does a great job handling the mystery of what happened to the family and the story is filled with unexpected twists and turns.

Will Lucy and her team uncover new evidence?  Will their investigation place them in danger?  And just who did kill Lily Martin, her baby daughter and her husband?  You’ll have to read Last Light to find out.  I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next book in this exciting new series!

My Rating:  5 out of 5 Crowns and a Recommenced Read

About C.J. Lyons

Pediatric ER doctor turned New York Times bestselling thriller writer C.J. Lyons has been a storyteller all her life—something that landed her in many time-outs as a kid. She writes her Thrillers with Heart for the same reason that she became a doctor: because she believes we all have the power to change our world. In the ER she witnessed many acts of courage by her patients and their families, learning that heroes truly are born every day. When not writing, she can be found walking the beaches near her Lowcountry home, listening to the voices in her head and plotting new and devious ways to create mayhem for her characters.
