RABBIT HOLES AND RESEARCH BY CATHY ACE

I often think of the research I do for my books as a bit of an indulgence. I’ve given Cait Morgan a lot of situations to deal with that have their genesis in my own interests. This is possibly more than ever the case for this book, the seventh in the Cait Morgan Mysteries series. THE CORPSE WITH THE GARNET FACE isn’t just set in one of my favorite cities in the world, Amsterdam, but it also has one of my favorite artists at its center – Vincent van Gogh.

The first Van Gogh I was truly aware of was one of his very late (if not the very last) paintings of corn fields he made in France. It was a print on the wall of the school I attended from the age of thirteen onwards. Prior to that I knew he’d painted sunflowers and irises, but I really wasn’t aware of the range of subjects he’d tackled. Once I’d “found” him, I didn’t look back.

To this day I have several large, beautifully printed books containing collected printings of his works, and I’ve visited the Van Gogh Gallery in Amsterdam many times over the years. I’ve stood, in awe, in front of his works whenever I have encountered them in galleries around the world. In my current home I have two prints I bought on my last visit to the Netherlands framed, and displayed in pride of place. I like his early, grungy pen and ink drawings, as well as his much more famous and colorful later works. The starry night-skies he created are what I see when I squint up at the points of light in the velvety sky above my home, and I can almost hear the wind rustling through the fields of wheat on his canvases when I look at them.

All of which means I spent rather more time “researching” this last book than I might have otherwise done. Without spoiling any plot points here, suffice to say I wanted to select certain of Van Gogh’s works and refer to them in this book. As such, I had to scroll through endless on-screen photographs of his works to be able to pick just the right pieces. At least, that’s what I told myself as I stared transfixed, at another self-portrait, or the detail of a piece of wallpaper in the background of an interior scene, for example. I find his work mesmerizing, and enjoyed having the chance to write about it. I hope that, maybe, people will look up the works I’ve referenced on the Internet as they read, and be able to share some of my enjoyment.

About the book:

The seventh book in the Cait Morgan series, the eccentric Welsh criminologist–sleuth travels to Amsterdam to track down the murderer of her husband’s long-lost uncle.

Cait’s husband, Bud, is just as surprised to find out he has an uncle as he is to find out that Uncle Jonas is now dead. Bud’s mother insists that Uncle Jonas was a bad child—a disposition made apparent, she believes, by the large purple birthmark covering most of his face. But in a letter he left for Bud, Uncle Jonas insists that he was driven away by hatred, and entreats his nephew to clear his name.

With an old iron key as their only clue, Cait and Bud travel to Amsterdam to solve the cryptic message left by Jonas, and honour the dying wish of a long-lost relative.
