Book Beginning & Friday 56 - #28

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

Journey to Munich ( A Maisie Dobbs Novel, Book 12) by Jacqueline Winspear

Holland Park, London, February 1938

The day was bright, the air crisp, with sunshine giving an impression of imminent spring, though as soon as a person ventured out from a warm, cocooned indoors, a nip in the chill outdoors soon found its way to fingertip and toes.

My thoughts:  We’ve recently had several very chilly mornings with bright sunshine so I totally get the type of day the author is describing.  We also know that we (the reader and characters) are back in London, which is quite different from where Maisie last was (Spain).  I also like the cover for this book more than the last one and think it's just perfect for what will be taking place.

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice on every Friday.

To Play along here are the Rules:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your post below.
*Don’t forget to add your post URL (not your blog url) at Freda’s Voice.
*It's that simple.

My 56 (Also from Journey to Munich at 56% of Kindle version ):

“There’s something else you should know, Miss Donat, and this is in extreme confidence – not that you have anyone to blab to, thank goodness, and the papers are already on fire with speculation.  We absolutely cannot have another delay in ganing your father’s freedom.  We have received intelligence that within the next forty-eight hours Herr Hitler will effect an invasion of Austria, though as far as he is concerned it is a reunification.”

My thoughts:  The reader knows that “Miss Donat” is in actuality Maisie Dobbs playing a part.  However, the part about Hitler planning to invade Austria and thus begin World War II was not play acting and apparently the British Embassy in Munich had received advance notification of the pending invasion.  This just makes me wonder what else might have been known before it happened during the war.

So what do you think?  Keep Reading? Don’t forget to link up at Freda’s Voice

About Journey to Munich by Jacqueline Winspear

Working with the British Secret Service on an undercover mission, Maisie Dobbs is sent to Hitler’s Germany in this thrilling tale of danger and intrigue—the twelfth novel in Jacqueline Winspear’s New York Times bestselling “series that seems to get better with each entry” (Wall Street Journal).

It’s early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England. On a fine yet chilly morning, as she walks towards Fitzroy Square—a place of many memories—she is intercepted by Brian Huntley and Robert MacFarlane of the Secret Service. The German government has agreed to release a British subject from prison, but only if he is handed over to a family member. Because the man’s wife is bedridden and his daughter has been killed in an accident, the Secret Service wants Maisie—who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter—to retrieve the man from Dachau, on the outskirts of Munich.

The British government is not alone in its interest in Maisie’s travel plans. Her nemesis—the man she holds responsible for her husband’s death—has learned of her journey, and is also desperate for her help.

Traveling into the heart of Nazi Germany, Maisie encounters unexpected dangers—and finds herself questioning whether it’s time to return to the work she loved. But the Secret Service may have other ideas. . . .
