Interview with Jenny Schwartz

Me:  What inspired you to write Sky Garden?

Jenny:  I wanted to write a novel about belonging, but one with a unique premise and setting. I chose the rooftops of London and a heroine haunted by her contact with a serial killer. That Lanie is an ex-medium intrigued me. How do stage psychics structure their performance? How much is real? And once the idea for the Horry Museum occurred to me, that was it! I had to write Sky Garden. I only wish an Edwardian house where visitors are welcome to touch the exhibits, even sit on them, was real.

Me:  When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Jenny:  I’ve always written. Seriously. Mum says I was scribbling, insisting that I was writing, before I could read or write. Apparently, I was very quiet and committed to it – not much’s changed!

Me:  What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Jenny:  My first year of school. I remember the Dick and Dora books. I would have been five, and there I was, reading about amazing adventures. “See Dick run. See Dora run. See Dick and Dora run.” Good grief! I actually remember the text.

Me:  What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Jenny:  I read widely within romance, but paranormal romance would have to be a favourite. I also enjoy science fiction and fantasy, mysteries and historical non-fiction.

Me:  What is your favorite book?

Jenny:  Barbara Hambly’s Bride of the Rat God. If you haven’t read this early Hollywood paranormal romance, go find it now! If you have read it, isn’t it fabulous?

Me:   You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Jenny:  I can’t pick!!! Okay. I’m going with James H Schmitz because he wrote The Witches of Karres. But really, ONE author? What about Ilona Andrews? Terry Pratchett? Georgette Heyer? Anne McCaffrey? Michelle Diener?

Me:  If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Jenny:  Oh gosh. Anywhere pre-power tools! My next door neighbour has been busy the last few days – busy driving me insane!

More specifically, I’d love to have seen the Oracle of Delphi, so Ancient Greece. Plus, what a beautiful landscape.

Me:  When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Jenny:  I love writing. The first draft is joyous, raw storytelling. Of course there are down days, but I know I’m VERY lucky to be doing something I love.

Me:  Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Jenny:  My old golden retriever died last year. Toby is irreplaceable, so the house is currently dog-lacking. Except that we dog-sit my sister’s dog frequently! It’s so hard losing a loved pet.

Me:  What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Jenny:  Chocolate. Also, it being summer here, ice blended mochas. Mmmhmmm. There really is a reason I’m trying to take up exercise!

Me:  Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Jenny:  Do it! Honestly, follow your heart and celebrate your own creativity. We’re creative when we cook and garden, buy clothes (truly, they express your personality), and in so many other ways, but telling a story, writing an entire novel, is deeply satisfying. You can do it! You don’t need advice, not for the first draft. Just get that story out.

And she’d used those tricks brutally, as the one weapon left to her. Survival had cost her the joy of performing.

But that was the past. She forced the memories away. Here was safe harbor, the library that was a sea captain’s final berth. A fantasy, but a comforting one.

She was searching for a spy glass to add to the photos she’d take when the electronic beep from the front door signaled the entrance of a visitor.
