Interview with Chelsea Walker Flagg

Where do you get your best ideas?

Chelsea:  From real life, for sure. I’ve always been an observer of life, so I’ve spent years noticing all the funny, random things that happen around me every day. Back before smart phones (I know, ancient, right?) I started using my flip phone to capture blurry pictures of these random things I was seeing. They became great starting points to telling stories about the funny things all around us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been sitting at a restaurant over dinner, and I just start laughing because the baby sitting at the table ahead of me is shoving crayons up her nose, or something like that. Real life really makes for some awesome stories.

If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?

Chelsea:  I’ve been vegetarian for the last 15 years (before it was cool to be vegetarian, mind you. Oh wait...I was just informed that it’s still not that cool to be vegetarian.) So, you’ll most likely get a good old veggie dish. Maybe a Tofurkey if you’re lucky. Just kidding. Even vegetarians have limits. I can tell you with certainty that I keep a great stash of chocolate for dessert after dinner.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

Chelsea:  I think it’s really easy in comedic writing to get raunchy, and I never want to go there. It’s never been a comfortable place for me. I hope to always be known as the Shirley Temple of comedy. Or something like that.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Chelsea: They’re definitely events in my own life, for better and for better-er. The key players in my book or me (of course), my husband, and my sister. So, you get a few snippets from their lives too, but I was the one who put all the blood, sweat, and tears into writing this book, so it should be mostly about me, dang it!

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?

Chelsea:  In the second grade, me and my best friend got in a really big fight about what color my hair was. I know, right? I said it was blond, but she had bleach-blond hair, so she was certain that compared to hers, my hair was yucky old brown. Traumatizing. We both started crying about it and neither one of us would back down. The fight lasted all recess. If I could go back in time, I would have been the the bigger person and would have just walked away, knowing secretly that fifteen years from then, I would start dying my hair anyway.

About the book:

Everybody has the awesome opportunity to find their own strength and path through life. Some come about their self-discoveries through studying and working hard. Others (Chelsea) spend their time nearly burning down kitchens and driving around the country with a car full of hangers.

Chelsea grew up wanting to be “strong.” She thought arguing her way through childhood and becoming a world-class attorney would get her there. But, through a series of humorous, and only slightly embarrassing events, Chelsea comes to realize that maybe her strength is meant to shine in different ways.

EXCERPT

“I tried to contain my excitement when my second grade teacher announced that our school’s Professional Day was coming up and we were all encouraged to dress up as what we wanted to be when we grew up. Now, just try to picture what your local veterinarian looks like and what they might wear on a daily basis to stand out from other occupations. You can’t, right?

Some parents had it easy; I mean how hard is it to make your child look like a firefighter or a member of middle management? My poor mom had a bigger task at hand. That’s why my costume ended up including a white bathrobe which I think was supposed to be a labcoat and an old pair of tortoise-shell sunglasses (lenses removed). In one hand I carried one of my million stuffed animals and in the other, a clipboard. I’m not entirely sure how a clipboard was going to prove that I was a veterinarian, but I was confident that if the clipboard didn’t give it away, the broken sunglasses definitely would. In a low childhood moment for me, not a single person - student or teacher - could guess what I was.

Even with the setback, I still knew I’d be the world’s best vet. My favorite animals by far were cats. To give you an idea of how in love with cats I was, imagine the person or thing that you love more than life itself, and then times that love by 100. I think it’s fair to use the word obsessed.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Chelsea was once obsessed with cats, longed to live in a big city, didn't think she would ever have children, and aspired to be an attorney. She now lives in Boulder, Colorado as a stay-at-home mom and comedic writer with her husband and three daughters. She has no current plans to own a cat.

  2. I can certainly relate to the sentiment in the title. Now I've reached the point where I can wear pajamas for most of the day, till it's time to go to the Post Office or take the dog for a walk. Sweet success!!

  5. I must read this book if only in an effort to learn the story behind the car full of hangers (please tell me that they were not of the wire variety). Pajamas should be acceptable attire for virtually all workplaces. Why do we continue we submit ourselves to the agonies of high heels, skirt suits, torturous undergarments, and (for gents) neckties? I'd be more productive if I weren't constantly hiking up fallen straps and sliding stockings. Why did you abandon the childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian? You could have rocked a cool work wardrobe of PJ's underneath a crisp white labcoat topper. (I had the same dream until the point of having to dissect an animal as part of an advanced bio class in high school.)

    1. Thanks, Katherine! I can tell we'll be great friends :)
The hangers, luckily, were plastic. Whew! I totally agree about wearing what we're comfortable in (I guess that's obvious given the fact that I've titled a book about it)
My veterinarian dreams - as you'll learn in my book - came crashing down much earlier on in childhood after watching a kitten have a seizure... I just couldn't quite look at the job of a vet the same way after that!
Can't wait to hear how you like my book :)

    1. Ooh...good question, Mai. I think a very relatable character for me is Hermoine Granger in Harry Potter. I was always that smart alecky kid in class whose hand always shot up first with the right answer, but had a soft side despite my classmates being annoyed by me ;)
