MADDIE DAY (aka: Edith
Maxwell) is a former farmer of a certified organic farm, holds a Ph.D. in
Linguistics, and is a member of Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of
America. Her short stories have appeared in the anthologies Stone Cold, Fish
Nets, Burning Bridges, Thin Ice, Riptide, and The Larcom Review. She lives with
her beau and three cats in Massachusetts, where she’s currently working on her
next Maddie Day mystery when she isn’t out gardening.

A huge fan of cozies with food, I jumped at the chance to read Flipped for Murder, the first book in a new series by Maddie Day and I was not disappointed. Colorful quirky characters, a solid mystery with a subplot and a good pace kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next. If you like cozy mysteries set in small towns, a charming mystery solver and new recipes to try out, then this is the book for you.Ms. Day does a great job introducing us to her primary character Robbie Jordan; a divorced woman who leaves the West Coast and moves to a small town in Indiana to get a fresh start. I easily connected with her and was rooting for her as she opened a combination restaurant and cookware store. Robbie’s future looks bright when her grand opening is filled with customers and well-wishers. Only things turn sour when the mayor’s cranky assistant, Stella Rogers, is found dead in her home with one of Robbie’s cheesy biscuits in her mouth. Realizing her business and possibly her freedom are at stake, Robbie decides she has to solve the mystery behind Stella’s death and track down the killer before he or she strikes again.The secondary characters are well developed and contributed a lot to the story. Colorful and sometimes behaving in crazy ways, they were a fun bunch to get to know. I also liked how Robbie gave herself a second and very personal mystery to solve when she decided this was the time and place to discover her real father’s identity. Something her mother never revealed before her death, and that she’s been wanting to find out for a long time. Both mysteries are filled with twists and turns and are well paced.Will Robbie discover who killed Stella and why they used one of her cheesy biscuits to kill her? Will she be able to solve the crime before she becomes the killer’s next target? And will she discover who her father really is or run into a dead end? You’ll have to read Flipped for Murder to find out. I loved it and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Crowns
