About the book:

Sydney journalist Charli Cooper is making major changes in her life. She has no idea what destiny has in store for her as she moves half way around the world for a fresh start.

Jack Manning is everything Charli shouldn't want. He is arrogant, cocky and use to getting what he wants. He has no time to deal with an inexperienced journalist who has no idea of the New York social hierarchy.

As she unlocks the truth about Manning and his empire, she realises all is not as it seems and if she digs deep enough, she might just find the story she has been looking for. She has to make a decision between her ambition and her heart.

Will the secrets they both hold cause their delicately poised relationship to crumble?

Can one mistake unravel their lives?

After a self-prescribed drought of contemporary romance, I was excited about getting to read and review Unravelled in New York by Suzanne Nicole for a couple of reasons.  First, I fell in love with the book cover; something about the images and color combination just works for me.  Second, I’d heard good word of mouth about Ms. Nicole’s writing and wanted to check it out.  Third and finally, I felt in the mood for a light romance and Ms. Nicole’s book satisfied all of my cravings.

After being in a relationship that dragged her self-esteem into the gutter, Australian journalist Charlotte “Charli” Cooper decides it’s time to pack her bags and put her career first.  Accepted into an apprenticeship program with her paper’s New York affiliate, Charli heads to the “Big Apple” with dreams of making it big.  She’s also determined to stay away romance of any kind.  Ms. Nicole does a really good job developing Charli’s character; I easily connected with the young, smart, attractive girl who mistakenly let a man talk her into doubting her abilities as a journalist and her worth as a woman.  I loved watching her get her “groove” as a journalist back and enjoyed seeing her self-esteem redevelop.  I also enjoyed “watching” her fall in love with New York and fall in love with Jack Manning, a man she considers a real jerk when they first meet.

Ms. Nicole also did a good job developing Jack Manning.  The “heir” apparent to a hugely successful development company, Jack has had a lot of obstacles to overcome.  Including some he’s created for himself.  Tall, built and devastatingly handsome, Jack is more than just eye-candy; he’s smart, determined and keeping secrets.  While he starts out as an alpha male with an attitude problem and pretty much a classic jerk, he quickly develops into much more and it’s pretty clear he’s smitten with Charli, though he’s got a lot of things to take care of.

The secondary characters are also well developed and I especially liked Mia, Charli’s best friend and roommate in New York.  She really believed in Charli and encouraged her as she rebuilt her self-esteem.  I also enjoyed getting to know some of Charli’s co-workers at the newspaper and getting to watch them work.  The story’s pace was good and Ms. Nicole’s writing style is easy to follow.  Her voice as an author is enjoyable and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Will Charli and Jack’s fledgling relationship survive all of Jack’s secrets?  Will Charli make the right decisions when it comes to her career and her heart?  You’ll have to read Unravelled in New York to find out, I certainly enjoyed it.
