Book Beginnings & Friday 56 - #4

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader. Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

Wonderment in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death, #41.5)

The dead were his business.
Over the years, he’d built a tidy fortune- though it was never enough, never quite enough- exploiting the dead and those who loved them.

My Thoughts:  Clearly we are “hearing” the thoughts of an unscrupulous person, perhaps even a criminal.

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

*It's that simple.

My 56 (Also from Wonderment in Death):

They interviewed three psychics – waking up one who claimed to commune with spirits between the hours of midnight and five a.m.
“Nothing there.” Eve got back in the car, aimed it toward Cop Central.
“The second one we talked to? Mikhal Lombrowski? He was the real deal.  The others, maybe they had something, but they were mostly looking to score.  He was genuine.”

  1. Hi Maria,

I am guessing that your first excerpt is also talking about a psychic, who exploits the dead by claiming to their relatives, that he can contact their loved ones --- unscrupulous indeed!

I have read a couple of J.D. Robb books, but many years ago. I have also read the author, writing under her own name of Nora Roberts.

I find her books to be great as short infill reads, as the crime is never anything too demanding to follow, or psychologically challenging to unravel.

Thanks for sharing. I hope that the other stories in the book also shape up to be good :)

  3. Interesting. I've been seeing a lot of Re-imaginings and re-tellings of Alice in Wonderland lately. Some better than others. I hope this is one of the better ones. :)

  4. Wow, stories with a Wonderland theme? That is very, very tempting to try.

  5. I wouldn't have expected the theme from these authors, but I might have to check it out!

Check out my Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings).

  6. Have never been a fan of Wonderland. As a child it really creeped me out. And yes, this seems like a very not nice kinda guy! Please check out mine... http://tinyurl.com/LisaKsBookReviewsblog

  7. I just got this book but haven't had a chance to read it yet. This week I am spotlighting Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett. Happy reading!

  8. I enjoy reading novellas -- short enough to avoid a big time commitment but long enough to provide a meaty story. This sounds like a collection of stories I'd enjoy.
My Friday post features The Beach Walkers.

  11. Very cool! I do like JD Robb. Agree with you that the opening is from the villain, but I thought it was an undertaker, like Anne, lol.

  13. Great beginning :D makes me wonder who he (feels like a he) is. It reminds me a little of Grave Witch, she could bring back a person's shade for trials... sort of like a detective for the unread. Then the family would pay for the service.
    Have a great week,
    Amy x
