About the book:

Annie Campbell has made a good life for her and her young son in the mountain town of Tidal Falls. She’s dating the sheriff, owns a successful business, and has the support of the community. So why isn’t it quite enough?

Jared Martin left Tidal Falls a hotheaded youth, and now, after eight years in the military, he returns a bitter, disillusioned man.

Then he finds out he’s a father.

When an old enemy follows and causes mayhem in the small town, can Jared overcome the odds to protect the woman he’s always loved and the child he never knew, or will it be too late?

A romantic suspense with a second chance romance, The Rebel’s Redemption by Jacquie Biggar, takes place in Tidal Falls, a fictional small town.  Filled with colorful characters, an interesting mystery and a decently paced plot The Rebel’s Redemption is the second book in the Tidal Falls series but is also a standalone story.  If you like military heroes, small town romance and secret baby stories, you will no doubt enjoy this book.

Ms. Biggar does a pretty good job developing the characters in her story and it was easy to connect with both Annie Campbell and Jared Martin, though they both have issues.  A single mother as a result of one night with best friend Jared, where they finally gave into their mutual attraction, Annie has struggled to become a successful businesswoman and move on after Jared left town to join the Navy.  Keeping the identity of her son’s father secret (though Jared’s mother has always suspected the boy is her grandson), Annie has started dating the local sheriff when Jared returns to town and stirs up a host of feelings; pain at having been “abandoned”, fear of losing her son, a resurgence of attraction towards Jared, and the realization that the life she’s grown accustomed to will be changing.

While Jared has returned to town to do a Navy buddy a favor (Nick Kelly from the first book in the series, Tidal Falls), he also wants to mend broken fences with the people he left behind.  Realizing his mother isn’t getting any younger, and that there might be something going on with her health, Jared figures Tidal Falls is as a good a place as any to live, especially since he’s still upset over an incident in his recent past involving a Vegas casino and the Russian mobster he tangled with.  When he runs into Annie, and her son, Jared realizes he’s still in love with his best friend and that he’s a father – something he never imagined in his wildest dreams.  A man prone to reacting quickly, Jared will have to develop patience to deal with the fallout from his past actions.

The secondary characters are also well developed and I really enjoyed getting to know Jared’s mom, a hard working woman who raised her son while her husband was in the service, I liked getting to know the local sheriff, who I felt sorry for because he found himself in a situation where he couldn’t win.  The villains of the story, and there are more than one, were horrible people who broke the law in so many ways that I really couldn’t wait for justice to be meted out.  Ms. Biggar also has a secondary mystery/dilemma that appears to be running throughout the entire series having to do with Jared’s old Seal team and a human trafficking ring tied to a Mexican drug cartel.  Plenty of action takes place as Jared, Annie and members of the “team”, work at solving all of the dramatic issues taking place.

Will Jared and Annie’s mutual attraction lead to a romantic reunion with a happy ending for all?  How will Jared and his son handle getting to know each other and building a relationship?  Will Jared’s team be able to put an end to the human trafficking that is taking place behind the scenes?  You’ll have to read The Rebel’s Redemption to find out.  I enjoyed it and want to read the next book so that I can find out how these issues will be resolved.
