When Tess Tremaine starts a new life in the colorful town of Goose Pimple Junction, curiosity leads her to look into a seventy-five-year-old murder. Suddenly she’s learning the foreign language of southern speak, resisting her attraction to local celebrity Jackson Wright, and dealing with more mayhem than she can handle.

A bank robbery, murder, and family tragedy from the 1930s are pieces of the mystery that Tess attempts to solve. As she gets close to the truth, she encounters danger, mystery, a lot of southern charm, and a new temptation for which she’s not sure she’s ready.

Fans of quirky cozy mysteries rejoice, there’s a new series in town!  Like solving cold cases? Like solving decades old mysteries? Look no further than Amy Mertz’s new book, Murder & Mayhem at Goose Pimple Junction, where you’ll enjoy getting to know colorful characters, “Southern Speak” and a transplanted “Northerner” who gets sucked into solving an unsolved crime from the 1930’s.  Well-paced and filled with plenty of humor, Ms. Metz’s story is sure to please any mystery reader.

Recently divorced and transplanted Northerner, Tess Tremaine loves the small Southern town she’s moved to in Tennessee.  Far from her cheating ex, Tess plans to write a romance novel, restore her classic home and stay away from men.  Only she can’t seem to stop running into Jackson Wright, a mystery writer who lives in town, and uncovering clues to a decade’s old murder that hasn’t been solved.   Only time, and quiet sleuthing, will tell if Tess manages to remain free of romantic entanglement and manages to solve the case before she becomes a victim herself.

Ms. Metz does a wonderful job creating and developing the characters in her book.  I really enjoyed getting to know Tess and easily connected with her character.  An almost middle aged woman, with a grown son, Tess is at a point where she’s literally starting over and the world is her oyster.  Free from almost everything in her past, Tess has a clear cut plan and idea of how she wants to spend her days and life.  I appreciated how she semi-reluctantly admitted her attraction, at least to herself, to Jackson Wright and how she was determined not to jump into any relationship, other than friendship, without really getting to know the person.  Embracing her freedom, Tess is a modern woman who’s learning what she wants in life and trying out new things.  Something that takes courage when you have been burned in the past.

Ms. Metz also does a good job developing the secondary characters and I really enjoyed getting to know Jackson Wright, an admittedly handsome man, who is attracted to Tess and worried about her safety.  I also enjoyed getting to know “Lou”, the elderly woman who owns the town’s bookstore and becomes Tess’s boss when Tess becomes a part time employee.  The mystery, which begins in 1930 at the height of the depression, centers on a bank robbery and the three men who held up the bank.  Ms. Metz does a good job pacing everything as she takes us between the past, and the present, and I enjoyed reading about the case while wondering if Tess was going to be able to remain safe while the descendants of the original criminals tried to keep the case closed.

Will Tess be able to solve a decades old case without stirring up a whole lot of trouble?  Will her attraction to Jackson help her or hinder her while she starts a new chapter in her life?  You’ll have to read Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction to find out.  I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Ms. Metz’s work.
