About the book:

A place of history, secrets…and witchcraft.

Devin Lyle has recently returned to the Salem area, but her timing couldn’t be worse. Soon after she moved into the eighteenth-century cabin she inherited from her great-aunt Mina—her “crazy” great-aunt, who spoke to the dead—a woman was murdered nearby.

Craig Rockwell—known as Rocky—is a new member of the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI’s team of paranormal investigators. He never got over finding a friend dead in the woods. Now another body’s been found in those same woods, not far from the home of Devin Lyle. And Devin’s been led to a third body—by…a ghost?

Her discovery draws them both deeper into the case and Salem’s rich and disturbing history. Even as the danger mounts, Devin and Rocky begin to fall for each other, something the ghosts of Mina and past witches seem to approve of. But the two of them need every skill they possess to learn the truth—or Devin’s might be the next body in the woods….

If like me your thoughts turn to the paranormal at this time of the year and you’re looking for something new to read, you just might find what you need with Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series.  Set in Salem, Massachusetts, The Hexed, gives us the story of Devin Lyle, a writer specializing in children’s novels and Craig “Rocky” Rockwell, a new member of the FBI’s team of paranormal investigators.  Both colorful and likeable characters they have one thing in common; they can see and speak with the dead.

Ms. Graham does a good job introducing the characters in this story and also introducing the “Krewe” itself; while this is the first book in the series I’ve read, I was able to jump right into the story and enjoy it on its own.  Using the location of Salem and its history with the witch trials, Ms. Graham sets up a murder mystery with a serial killer who is selecting specific targets who all happen to be members of the local Wicca group.  The secondary characters are also well developed and I particularly liked Devin’s “Aunt Mina”, who died before the start of the book, helped to raise Devin as a child and left her home to Devin.  A home she now haunts.  I also enjoyed getting to know Craig’s high school friends and getting a look at his past – it’s not every day a young man passes up a promising football career to become a federal cop.

The romance between Devin and “Rocky” is pretty low key but at the same time it’s nice; it adds an extra element to the story without being overly graphic.  The mystery of the killer’s identity is well handled and there are plenty of twists and turns in the plot.  The pace is also good and kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next.  Though I thought I knew who the killer was, Ms. Graham does a good job and the final reveal wasn’t what I expected.

Overall I enjoyed reading The Hexed and look forward to going back to the beginning of this series to discover how the “Krewe” got its start.  I know I’m looking forward to seeing where Ms. Graham takes us next in this series.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns
