Cinnamon and Synonyms by H.A. Somerled

          I’ve been through many training programs, two of the most recent being culinary school and a literary program. Food and writing, doesn’t sound like a good combination, unless you plan on being a food critic or cooking magazine writer.  I however was just following my passions.  I left the Navy to become a chef.  I took a sabbatical from cooking to learn how to write.

          One is crafting dishes from ingredients to feed one’s body, the other is crafting words to develop stories to feed one’s soul. Both are creative, both can be transcendent, and both can cause the creator anguish and exhilaration.

          Cooking and writing have been passions of mine since I was young.  I’ve always enjoyed a good story, and tried to emulate some of the books I’ve read over the years: Along Came a Spider, The Vampire Lestat, The Stranger.  Cooking came to me through 4-H and was enforced through cable cooking shows like Great Chefs, Yan Can Cook, and The Frugal Gourmet.

          Learning the craft, for both skills, is an ongoing process.  Sure, I learned the basics, got a firm grasp of the English language, learned how to chiffonnade basil and other precise knife cuts.  However, the more I write, the more I cook, the more I read, I realize how little I know.

          Then there are the critics. People don’t like the subject, the texture, the length, the amount served. It’s too bland, too spicy, boring, over done, cliche, trite, and just plain weird. They don’t understand how much of my heart went into the dish/chapter, how much I tried different ingredients, phrases, techniques, and scenes. But it only takes one, one person, to absolutely love it.  They will rave about it, tell everyone what a great experience they had, tout your attributes and defend your reputation.  Those are the people I aim to please. I take their suggestions and modify to their tastes, they are the ones I can trust to give me the best advice and in turn I give them my best work.

He looked up to Angel’s flat and his heart dropped when he saw the burned-out windows as fire continued to consume it. How could she have escaped that? As Danny gaped at the ruins, his eyes filled with tears. She’s gone!

 AUTHOR INFORMATION:

H. A. Somerled lives in the Missoula, Montana area. After an uneventful tour in the U.S. Navy, she followed her passions and enrolled in Culinary School. She graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art and has also completed a writing course from the Long Ridge Writer's Group.

She has two dogs, a puggle named Fritter and a pug named Flapjack.  She considers herself lucky to be single and claims she's half the age she really is.
