About the book:

Move over 50 Shades, there’s a new romance in town. Superstar Wendy Williams brings on the heat in her first ever, no-holds-barred, down and dirty, romance novel.

Kimberly Kind is trying to get beyond her roots. A successful, beautiful, smart lawyer, she’s finally finding direction in her life and getting out of the streets. But a terrible accident threatens to throw her carefully laid plans off course. Now Kim’s hiding a huge secret… one that could threaten everything.

Enter King. A perfect mix of Justin Timberlake and David Beckham, the man oozes sex and has more swagger than anyone Kim’s ever met. Their chemistry is off the charts. But after passion-filled nights, the intensity of their emotions takes both of them by surprise.

Love was not supposed to be an option. Now it’s the only thing holding them together. When their pasts come back with a vengeance, can love possibly be enough?

Sometimes you agree to read and review a book because you expect it to fit into a certain “niche” or “box” due to the genre or category a book is advertised to be a part of.  When I agreed to read Wendy Williams’ Hold Me In Contempt, I was expecting a typical romance with interracial characters whose different races were at the heart of the conflict in the story.  While Ms. Williams’ book does have some romantic elements, and the main characters are from different races, her book is much different than what I expected.  So I’ll be doing something a little different with my review.

What I really liked:

1.    Character Development: Ms. Williams’ does a good job developing all of her characters.  While they may not all be likeable, they are well written and you can identify with them.
2.    Setting: Ms. Williams’ knowledge of an urban setting and the language spoken in the “neighborhood” is strong and not intended for anyone who gets easily offended.
3.    Political/Societal Topics: Ms. Williams is willing to confront the issues that plague our modern society and isn’t afraid to shy away from what’s relevant (race issues, sexual orientation, and drug issues).

What I had issues with:

1.    I felt the romance was under-developed and while I did connect with both the hero and the heroine, I didn’t always like them though I did end up rooting for them at the end.
2.    Language: clearly intended for adults and I’m not sure some of the language was necessary for the story.
3.    Cliff hanger ending: While I know this type of ending has become more popular with authors as of late, it’s always been something that bugs the heck out of me.

Overall, I think Ms. Williams’ has a good, strong voice as an author.  Her story was easy to read and I did find myself turning the pages quickly to find out what would take place next.  I look forward to seeing how her “romance” style develops.

My Rating:  3.5 out of 5 Crowns
