About the book:

Sex, money, and terrorism
What do the violent takeover of Fez brothels and a new stream of terrorist funding have to do with the disappearance of Alicia Harmon from the Fez office of Femme Aid Maroc? When CIA analyst Lee Carruthers tries to find out, she is swept into a tangled web of dirty money and human trafficking, and people will kill to find out what Alicia knew. If only Lee knew. She’s working blind, and in this case, ignorance is death. Her search takes her through the slums of the Fez medina to the high-rises of the new city and finally to a terrorist camp in the Algerian desert.

A CIA analyst thinking about a career change, a missing aid helper and a new group of terrorists using dirty money to fund their war take center stage in Marilynn Larew’s The Spider Catchers, the first book in the Lee Carruthers mystery series.  A strong female protagonist, plenty of physical action and lively dialogue kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next.  Set against the backdrop of Morocco and Northern Algeria, Ms. Larew’s book is sure to thrill many readers.

Arriving back in Paris from a recent assignment, CIA analyst Lee Carruthers is surprised to discover her boss waiting for her in her apartment.  Being sent to recover a missing aid worker, who’s really another CIA analyst, is not part of Lee’s job assignment but is something she’s going to have to do.  She just never planned on encountering a new group of terrorists determined to pick up where Bin Laudin left off.

Ms. Larew does a really good job developing Lee’s character; she’s smart, brave and really talented at doing her job.  The secondary characters, including her ex fiancĂ©e, are well developed and add depth and color to her story.  I especially liked Kemal, one of Lee’s informants, and their more than friends relationship. The mystery of what happened to the aid worker, and what the terrorists are up to, is also first rate.

Will Lee find the missing aid worker before it’s too late?  Will she make it out of North Africa alive?  You’ll have to read The Spider Catchers to find out.  If you’re looking for the female “Jack Ryan”, give “Lee Carruthers” a try.
