“He looks so happy in those pictures. Why would he kill himself?” A sob tore through Sam.

“I don’t know. Please leave it be.”

She spun around. “You have to know, Mom. You were his wife. We were happy. I see it in your eyes in all the pictures. Why’d he do it?”

“Some things are better left...”

“No, Mom. It’s long overdue. I want some answers. WHY DID HE DO IT?”

Other than the wind howling outside the window and rain slapping at the glass, there was only the sound of the large grandfather clock ticking away.

“Was I such a disappointment to him?”

“No!” Her look of horror was almost enough to make her stop asking.

“Why then?”

“Oh, Sam.” She burst into tears. Sam rushed to her side, wrapping her arms around her, holding her tight just like she had the many times Sam had cried on her shoulder. Sam felt a rush of uncertainty, like the rug had just been yanked out from underneath her feet - she’d never seen her mom cry, ever. Not when she’d had five kids to keep in line, organized, moving forward. Not when she’d had to be the stern disciplinarian and her kids got mad at her and told her how unfair she was and that they wished Dad was still around. Not when others were mean to her or her kids. Not at her dad’s funeral. Not when anyone picked on DD or treated her like she was less than. No one ever made that mistake twice though with her mom.

Sobs shook her slender shoulders, Sam hugged her tight. The tears finally stopped flowing and she gently pulled away from Sam and limply lay back in the chair.

She reached out and cupped Sam’s cheek. Sam lifted her shoulder up to return the affection.

“There’s so much to tell. I should have told all of you a long time ago but I couldn’t. I didn’t want to ruin...” she bowed her head, “your memories of your father. He was a good man.”

Sam bit her tongue, which had to have been the hardest thing she’d ever done, outside of staying still in that crouched position waiting for her mom to continue.

“I don’t know where to start. We were so happy. So in love. When all you kids started coming, we were in heaven. Life was so good. But...” Sam covered her mom’s twisting hands. “I don’t know what happened. One day he just vanished. He was just gone.”

“What do you mean gone?”

“I mean he just up and disappeared. He’d been acting kind of strange for a few months before that. I tried talking to him but he wouldn't tell me anything. He kept saying he didn’t want me hurt. He didn’t want to tarnish what I knew. But he never explained what that meant."

“Is he dead or not?”

“I don’t know.”

“What? Mom! We had a funeral. People said he’d committed suicide. That he took some pills and drowned in the lake.”

“Oh dear, I had hoped you’d never hear those rumors.”

Sam stood up, taking long purposeful strides across the room. “People talk. Please tell me you know more. You have to know something. You were close, right? So what was going on?”

“Don’t–”

“I’m a big girl. I think it’s time you told me the truth.”

Her mom put her hands in prayer, pressing them gently against her chin as she closed her eyes. A few minutes passed before she shared what she knew.

“Your dad was defrauding the company and he was having an affair.”

“NO!” She thumped her fists against her thighs. “Impossible. I don’t believe it.” She raced over to kneel at her mom’s feet.

“How do you know? What proof did you have?”
