Kathryn Long is a recently retired school teacher
who has enjoyed writing mysteries for several years. Credits include mystery
shorts, “Betrayal in an Envelope” and “A Good Man”, both published by The
Piker Press. Long has ventured into self-publishing the cozy Lilly M.
mystery series with titles Whips, Cuffs, and Little Brown
Boxes and Gangs, Illegals, and a Rose Tattoo, as well as a
series of YA novels, Cinderella Geek, Not So Snow
White and Alice in Realityland under the pen name
Jennkrist. Dying to Dream is her latest mystery gone to print with
indie publisher, Mainly Murder Press. Future publications include a
romantic suspense novel titled A Deadly Deed Grows, which will be coming
out next year with The Wild Rose Press.

My ReviewThey warn you “not to judge a book by its cover” and that is certainly true of Kathryn Long’s Whips, Cuffs and Little Brown Boxes. The first book in the Lily M. Mystery series, Ms. Long’s well developed characters, hilarious dialogue and non-stop action kept me turning the pages to discover what was going to happen next. Ms. Long has now become an author I’ll be keeping my eyes on.Finally allowed to go on a “ride along” by the local police, mystery writer Lily Millenovanovich receives a frantic phone call from her family telling her that “Aunt Fran is missing”. While reluctantly agreeing to keep her nose out of the investigation, due to some “misunderstandings” while attempting to help the police solve a previous case, Lily has no intentions of staying at home. Dragging Mona, her best friend and cousin, into the case, Lily soon has both of them neck deep in danger.Ms. Long does a really good job developing Lily’s character; she’s smart, single, forty-something, and has a mouth that just won’t stop. She’s also feisty, loyal and determined to get to the truth, all while dealing with a kooky family, a “secret” boyfriend (one of the local cops) and a very colorful neighbor (who insists on being called Davey Crocket). Ms. Long also does a good job developing the mystery, there are several twists and turns throughout the story and I wasn’t sure about the “villain” until almost the end.Will Lily and Mona find Aunt Fran before it’s too late? And will Lily’s romance still be a secret when the mystery is solved? You’ll have to read Whips, Cuffs and Little Brown Boxes to find out. I enjoyed it and can’t wait to see what Lily M. gets up to next.My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Crowns
