I’d take a picture, but vampires don’t show up on film.  By Pamela Fagan Hutchins, author of Leaving Annalise

All the vampire craziness started while I was in the middle of my 60-cities-in-60-days nationwide book tour via a 24-foot RV dubbed the Bookmobile. I guess that bears a little explanation.

I hit the road last summer to promote the Katie & Annalise series, since the first book in the series, Saving Grace, had done so well, and because Leaving Annalise, the next in the series, was scheduled for a late summer release. I toted my one-eyed Boston terrier Petey along the whole way, and I was joined by a revolving lineup of four of my driving-age offspring, my mother, and my husband as drivers/assistants. In other words, they were there to make sure I didn’t go all crazypants under the strain.

My 18-year old ADHD/Asperger’s son known as “Clark Kent” had joined me for his leg of the tour. After a wonderful event at a Barnes and Noble in Oklahoma City, the drive to where we were spending the night was a long one, but worth it. We were staying at the (extremely) rural home of my online friend/beta reader/collaborator Nan. Clark Kent, while not always useful for much more than a laugh at book events, was always willing to drive and carry the heavy stuff, so drive he did, until 11:45 p.m. in Alma, AR.

Swirling blue and red lights appeared in our rearview camera. I handed Clark Kent the insurance, a drill I was quite familiar with now as this was the third time we’d been pulled over during the book tour. A state trooper appeared at his window.

“Did you know you’ve got a tail light out?” a 30-ish white officer with short dark hair and a friendly tone of voice asked.

“No, sir, we didn’t. Sorry about that.” Clark Kent sounded very mature and looked him in the eye. I was proud. He handed the officer his license and insurance.

The officer checked out our credentials then was back. He asked a few polite questions about our origin, destination, and what we were doing in his fair state, then sent us on our way with Warning Number Three of the summer. Clark Kent and I switched and I drove the last 45 minutes to Nan’s.

As we drove up her long, winding driveway between sleepy white cattle on either side, Clark Kent said, “Mom, you don’t really know anything about this woman. I’ll bet she and her husband are vampires, and you’re making us spend the night in their lair.”

Clark Kent’s girlfriend Allie laughed, but I could tell that neither of them was fully comfortable with my decision to home-stay.

“She’s an ordained minister,” I replied.

“So she says.”
