Description:

Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. After coming face to face with the one who got away, he decides he's waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of old friends, a few wishing rocks, the world’s largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack thrown into the mix, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

My Review

A contemporary romance with forty something aged characters, Daisy Prescott's debut release, Geoducks Are For Lovers, is an interesting cross between a coming of age story and a second chance romance. Likable characters, frank and adult language, and friendships based on shared college experiences, kept me turning the pages from the very beginning. Set in a small town north of Seattle, the scenery and natural wildlife also play a part in this story.

Getting back on her feet after caring for her sick and now deceased mother, Maggie Marrion is ready to move forward. Looking forward to a weekend pre-reunion get together for her college friends, Maggie is looking forward to food, wine and reminiscing. She wasn’t planning on being given a second chance at love or on having to come to terms with the woman she’s become.

History professor Gil Morrow was one of Maggie’s best friends in college. At least until they tried to take their relationship from friends to lovers. Now twenty years later, still friends but no longer close, Gil finds himself as someone’s “date” at Maggie’s get together. Now he just has to decide if he’s willing to take a chance on love with the one who got away.

The scenes between Maggie and Gil are full of angst, sexual tension and lively dialogue. While still friends, their relationship has changed as much as they have since they were young adults. Now mature grownups, both Maggie and Gil have to face what went wrong in the past so they can move forward into the future. Ms. Prescott does a good job of developing both of their characters, while giving us insight into who they were and who they are now.

The secondary characters are well developed and all play an important part in this story. From their close college friends; especially Quinn and Selah, to Maggie’s next door neighbor John, who they’ve nicknamed “Paul Bunyon”. While there is no “villain’ in this romance, both Maggie and Gil have to make peace with romantic choices they made in the past, and in Maggie’s case, the way she guards her heart along with the past choices she's made.

Will Maggie finally realize that Gil is really the “one” for her and that love is worth taking a risk? Will she finally let go of all of her “safety” nets? You’ll have to read Geoducks are for Lovers to find out. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Ms. Prescott's work.
