About the book:

Be careful what you wish for…

The last thing covert operative Mitch Weaver wants is to be partnered with a gorgeous, reckless newbie. Still reeling from the death of his former partner, Mitch doesn’t need the responsibility of keeping anyone else alive, especially when they volunteer to be a killer’s target. Not to mention, his attraction to the too-perky blonde is the kind of distraction that could get them both killed in their line of work.

Andrea Carnegie’s first assignment isn’t going quite as she planned. Her partner might be sexy but he’s completely frustrating with his determination to keep her out of danger. Masquerading as a billionaire’s sister to bait a possible killer is her chance to shine. But if she wants to catch the person threatening their client, she’ll have to find a way to work together with Mitch while still keeping her distance. Even as the air between them sizzles, Andrea knows the worst possible thing she could do is fall for her partner.

EXCERPT

Andrea Carnegie swung open the weight room door expecting to follow her normal routine for the rest of Sunday afternoon: pump iron, jog ten miles in the crisp November air, fire a few dozen rounds at the shooting range, then spend an hour practicing Russian or Arabic before sitting down to savor a medium-rare steak.

“Damn it, Carnegie! Throw the ball.”

She froze as someone shouted her name in the break room across the hall. A second later, picturing the all-too familiar scene, she let her shoulder muscles relax. Some of the other operatives must be watching the big game. Her superstar brother Damian was in as quarterback and scrambling to avoid a tackle.

Was Damian about to eat dirt? Hope trickled down her spine, quickly followed by a torrent of guilt. She should be rooting for her own flesh and blood.

She huffed out a breath. In a normal family, that would be true. But the Carnegies were anything but normal. After twenty-six years of living in Damian’s shadow and fending off his venom, she couldn’t help but wish he’d be fallible. She hustled across the hall and pressed her back tight against the wall, listening.

A groan erupted inside the break room. “Shit. He’s down. There goes the game.”

Yes! More hope surged. Could Damian’s team actually be losing?

The commentator announced a time-out. Her colleagues in the break room debated the coach’s options: go for a field goal or give Damian a chance to throw.

“Give the ball to someone else. Go for the kick,” Andrea mumbled.

Damian’s head was already bigger than Texas. If he pulled this game out of the Dumpster, he’d add the story to his repertoire and she’d be forced to endure never-ending replays of another moment of glory at every family get together. He loved nothing more than bragging about games he’d won or spewing graphic accounts of his sexual exploits.

“There’s the decision, folks. Carnegie’s coming back out, going for a Hail Mary pass.” The men in the room whooped in celebration. Andrea’s balloon of hope deflated.

The commentator went on, “Okay, they’re lining up. There’s the snap. Carnegie’s got the ball and falling back. Looking. Jogging right to avoid a tackle. He’s found a receiver. Wiggs is open in the end zone! Carnegie throws. Wiggs has it! Touchdown!”

Crap. Why couldn’t Damian ever botch a throw? Just once, she’d love for one of her brothers to drop a ball, trip over his feet, or draw a penalty. Right now, if the guys in the break room changed the channel, another of her brothers would probably be making a spectacular catch while a commentator gushed about his fabulous speed or ball control.

Andrea shook her head in disgust. She’d never had any hope of keeping up with her NFL superstar brothers. She was the only offspring who’d failed to exploit Coach’s athletic perfection gene. And as the youngest of four and the only girl, she’d been at a disadvantage from day one.

In other families, a girl living with three older brothers and her father might have been protected and prized. In her family, ridicule, cruel practical jokes, bullying, and nicknames like pipsqueak and runt had lashed the little kid who’d been dumb enough to worship her siblings. Toughness and competition had been rewarded. Crying or a hint of compassion scorned.

She reminded herself of her vow to never be vulnerable again and rolled her eyes at the crazy idea that she’d once wanted to be like her brothers. Being like them was aiming low, settling for being cold and unfeeling. She’d be different and better, make her own mark. She wanted to matter somehow, and she would. Just not in their game.

Squaring her shoulders, Andrea turned to leave. A voice in the room said, “Shit, I really need to date Andrea so I can meet her brothers and father. I bet she can get prime seats at any game, even the playoffs.”

She spun back.

Kathleen Mix writes stories with a thrilling mix of romance and suspense.  She took an indirect route to becoming an author. After her three sons started school, she returned to college and earned a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering. Working as a software engineer, she consulted on applications ranging from submarine combat systems to biological research databases.

Weekends and vacations were always reserved for boating. And as an avid sailor and licensed charter boat captain, the itch to sail away into the sunset soon became too strong to resist. She and her husband moved aboard their sailboat and headed south. By the time they reached the Caribbean, they were hooked on a cruising life. Since then, Kathleen has spent many years roaming the U.S. coastline, exploring the Bahamas, and enjoying the tropical islands of the Caribbean and the coastal countries of South America.

She began her writing career with non-fiction sailing and travel articles. But she was sailing to lush, exotic islands under starry skies and walking on the most beautiful, white-sand beaches in the world. She started imagining stories of romance and adventure and turned to writing romantic suspense.

Book Beginnings & Friday 56 - #52

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Every Friday we share the first sentence (or so) of the book we’re currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

My Book Beginning:

Fatal Identity (Fatal Series, Book 10) by Marie Force

STANDING BEFORE THE Internal Affairs Board that would determine her fate, Detective Lieutenant Samantha “Sam” Holland was at peace.  If they busted her down a rank or two, so be it.  Her life would be a whole lot less complicated with someone else in charge of the Homicide unit.

My Thoughts:  I have been glomming on this series since I started it last week and have already finished this book.  “Sam” did something in book 9 – which I frankly applauded – that got her in trouble with the Chief and now she’s facing the consequences.  She’s also totally in denial about being okay with someone else being in charge – she is a true Type A personality female.

What do you think?  Don't forget to leave your book beginning below and to link-up at Rose City Reader.

Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice on every Friday.

To Play along here are the Rules:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your post below.
*Don’t forget to add your post URL (not your blog url) at Freda’s Voice.
*It's that simple.

My 56 is also from Fatal Identity (Fatal Series, Book 10) by Marie Force – about 56% thru Kindle version:

Scotty came into the kitchen wearing his grumpy morning face and scowled at the sight of them Kissing.  “Knock that off, I haven’t had coffee yet.”
Sam lost it laughing.  “You don’t drink coffee.”
“When will I be old enough for coffee?”

My Thoughts:  As all of my friends and family know – you don’t interrupt me on the way to the coffee pot in the mornings if you want a pleasant greeting….lol….Scotty is Sam and Nick’s 13 year old adopted son and he totally cracks me up.  He complains about their public displays of affection and they keep telling him that payback will happen when he gets his first girlfriend.  I really enjoyed reading this installment and all I can say is….”Write faster Marie!”…..lol.

So what do you think?  Would you read this book?  Don’t forget to comment below and link up at Freda’s Voice

About Fatal Identity (Fatal Series, Book 10) by Marie Force

Every family has its secrets…

As the first anniversary of her marriage to Vice President Nick Cappuano approaches, Lieutenant Sam Holland is dreaming of Bora Bora—sun, sand and a desperately needed break from the DC grind. But real life has a way of intervening, and Sam soon finds herself taking on one of the most perplexing cases of her career.

Government worker Josh Hamilton begs Sam to investigate his shocking claim that his parents stole him from another family thirty years ago. More complicated still, his "father" is none other than the FBI director. When a member of Josh's family is brutally murdered, Sam begins to question how deep this cover-up goes. Is it possible the revered director was part of a baby-napping ring and that others involved are also targets?

With a killer intent on deadly revenge and her team still reeling from a devastating loss, Sam's plate is full—and when Nick and their son, Scotty, take ill, is her dream of a tropical anniversary celebration in peril too?

EXCERPT

“If you need to study, you’re right, you’ll be doing it here, because I’m not going anywhere near those cameras unless I have to.”

My muscles relaxed as I realized she wasn’t going to renege on our deal and not tutor me. “I understand.”

“Okay then. Do you have your schedule so I know what classes you have?”

“I have every class you do.”

Her mouth dropped open. “How is that even possible?”

“I needed to know you could help me, or take notes if I had to miss class.”

Because I engineered it that way.

“Did you sleep with the registrar or something? How did you make that happen? You know what? I don’t even want to know. We have seminar at nine a.m. tomorrow. Do you think you can make it? Or were you planning on waterskiing behind the ship or something?”

“That’s not even...” Huh. I wondered if it was possible.

Maybe if the rope was long enough, and we launched from—

“Unbelievable. No wonder you need a tutor. You’ve killed off all your brain cells doing stupid crap. Tell me something—are you just here for the Renegade Channel?”

My eyes widened. “I thought you didn’t know who I was?”

She rolled hers. “Come on. We’re still close enough to port to have good internet, and there’s not a lot of Paxton Wilders running around. Google is pretty nifty with the whole search thing.”

I swallowed. How much did she know? “What did it tell you?”

“That you run a YouTube channel with a few friends who all have ridiculous stage names, you’ve won a couple X Game medals in motocross or snowmobiling or something.”

“Both,” I answered automatically.

“Great. You enjoy flinging yourself off mountains and buildings and generally see exactly what it would take to kill yourself, and I’m responsible for getting you through this academic year while you’re doing it all over the world, right?”

Fuck. She put it together so quickly. “What makes you think that?”

“Well, I doubt those hugely expensive cameras are here to document some boring reality show featuring your academics center stage, so the only plausible explanation is that you’re here to take your little channel international. Or is it bigger?”

“Bigger,” I answered truthfully. “Some of the things we have planned aren’t exactly legal in the U.S., so it seemed to be a great time to shoot the documentary. What else did you learn?”

“That you prefer leggy blondes who have a disproportionate ratio of breast to waist. Which is fine with me; I’m sure there’s a full treasure trove here to select from, and I’m safe since I don’t fit any of that criteria.”

“Whoa, when did I even hint—?”

She threw her palms out. “You didn’t. I just figured I’d get ahead of you. Look, you almost killed me, dumped me into a huge pool, and now I’m stuck with you if I want to stay on this trip. I understand what I signed up for. But I will not be involved in anything you do—like I was today—ever again. You and I are business only, got it?”

I nodded slowly. “Got it.” What the fuck just happened?

“Good. Now you can leave. I’ll see you at seminar in the morning.” She walked to the door and held it open until I left her room, closing the door behind me with a loud click.

I was halfway to my room before I started laughing. Little Eleanor Baxter had done the one thing no other girl had done in my lifetime—dismissed me outright.

I knew I liked her for a reason.
