Silver Borne ( Mercy Thompson, Book 5)- A Review

Author:              Patricia Briggs

Genre:                Paranormal Romance

Purchase:         Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5)

Synopsis:

When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she'd previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.

It seems the book contains secret knowledge-and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side-leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam's life forfeit.

All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn't careful, she might not have many more to live...

My Review:

I waited in anticipation for almost a year for this book and I was not disappointed.   This book picks up a couple of weeks after the events of the last book (Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4).  Mercy is dealing with getting accustomed to having a mate in Adam and in still having a roommate in Samuel.  She also is dealing with getting accustomed to being in Adam's wolf pack and the politics involved with that.  She's not overly thrilled to be back in wolf pack but is doing the best she can to try to keep everyone satisfied.

Mercy is also changing as a person now that she is part of a pair, she still manages to get into trouble but she has fallen deeply in love with Adam and is willing to overlook werewolf behavior that used to drive her crazy.  She's also dealing with being a non-parent involved in a teen's life in that she is spending more time with Jessie, Adam's daughter.

Mercy is still loyal to her friends though and she notices behavior in Samuel that alerts her that all is not well with her friend.  Samuel is still dealing with issues of resenting his werewolf nature and of being alone, with no mate.  Inadvertently, Samuel puts Mercy in a situation where she finds herself not being completely honest with Adam or with Bran, the Marrock. On top of this she then has to deal with a strange phone call regarding the fae book that she had borrowed when dealing with the fae (Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, Book 3)

There is again quite a bit of action that takes place in the book.  There's an attempted assassination, a bombing, a kidnapping and an evil Fairie Queen.  All in all this was an extreemly enjoyable book and the only negative thing is ....that we have to wait for the next book in the series.  We also get to see the romance between Mercy and Adam and how it is developing, which I just loved.  I highly recommend that anyone who wants good paranormal fiction read this entire series.

Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock Book 2) - A Review

Author:            Faith Hunter

Genre:              Paranormal Romantic Suspense

Format:           Both Print and E-book

Purchase:        Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, Book 2)

Excerpt

Back Cover Blurb:

As a vampire hunter and skinwalker, Jane Yellowrock is public enemy number one in the vampire community- even though she's also the key to their survival.  Now she's about to learn that working for the enemy can be just as dangerous as hunting them.

The Vampire Council of New Orleans has hired Jane to hunt and kill one of their own who has broken sacred ancient rules.  But she quickly realizes that in a community that is thousands of years old, loyalties run deep.

With the help of her witch best friend and local vigilantes, Jane finds herself caught between bitter rivalries- and closer than ever to the secret origin of the entire vampire race.  But in a city of old grudges and dark magic, Jane will have to fight to protect both sides, even if no one will protect her.

My Review:

This is the second book in the Jane Yellowrock series.  I really loved this book.  The heroine is an alpha female who is also deeply caring and loyal.  This book takes place within a week or so of when book one ended.  Her best friend Molly ( a witch) and Molly's children have come to New Orleans for a visit because Molly's husband Evan (a sorcerer) had to go out of the country on business.  Jane is under contract to the Vampire Council to capture/kill a rogue master vampire who is making other vampires outside of the law.  Jane is also still trying to deal with the little bit of insight that she got into her past history in the first book and is also still being pushed by "beast", her shifter nature, to take a mate.

There are 3 strong alpha type men in this story that are all interested in Jane for a romantic liason.  Rick, the undercover cop from the first book, who is no longer undercover and is seriously attracted to Jane and lets her know it.  Then there is George (aka Bruiser) who is the blood servant of the Leo, the Master Vampire of New Orleans.  George is a serious hottie according to the description and "Beast" is seriously attracted to him.  Finally there is the Master Vampire, Leo, himself who is attracted to Jane but in this book is dealing with the loss of his son.  He is in a bad way and can't decide if he is attracted to Jane or wants to kill her.

There is the rougue vampire that Jane has to locate and I certainly didn't see who it was coming, that was a real surprise.  So were some of Jane's weaknesses.  It was nice to see that Jane has as many human issues as the rest of us.  It was also nice to see the scenes where Jane was dealing with the men and how they affected her.

Overall this is an excellent follow up to a great first story and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.  I will say that I was surprised by the choice of boyfriend that Jane made at the end of the book and don't know if the relationship will last but it will be interesting to see what happens in her love life and to see how she uses the additional knowledge about the creation of the first vampire and vampire history.

I highly recommend this book.

Wolf Games- A Review

So since I did a contest with the book last week, I thought that I should review it.

Author:             Vivian Arend

Genre:               Paranormal Romance

From the Publisher:

True love’s path never did run smooth.

Granite Lake Wolves, Book 3

After seven years of total denial, Maggie Raynor’s body—and her inner wolf—are in full revolt. Weak and shaky, she literally falls into the very large and capable arms of the Granite Lake Beta, Erik Costanov. The last thing she wants is a mate, particularly when just looking at another wolf scares her to death. And one as big and sexy as Erik? Really bad idea, no matter what her libido says.

Erik expected to meet Maggie in Whitehorse to escort her to the home of her sister, his pack’s Omega. Sheer chance puts him in the right place at the right time to catch her, but the realization that hits him with the force of a full body shot is no accident. She’s his mate. An even bigger shock? She wants no part of him—not until she resolves her issues.

She’ll have to work fast, because they’re both selected to represent the pack during the premier sporting event for wolves in the north. Not only will she have to work as a team with Erik, she’ll have to face down her fear of wolves. Let the Games begin.

My Review:

This is the 3rd book in the Granite Lake Wolves series by Ms. Arend and it is a another solid installment.  The hero of this book is Erik, the beta to the Granite Lake pack.  He is a very large man, tall with wide shoulders, who also happens to be a "hottie", but the best part of him is his character.  He is highly intelligent, speaks 7 languages, and is caring, loyal and fiercely protective of those in his care.  The heroine is Maggie, sister to one of the pack's Omega Wolves (Missy from book 2, Wolf Flight), a woman who has lost touch of her inner wolf.  She hasn't been around wolves in 7 years for a couple of reasons.  She now has to learn first hand that not all wolf packs are the same and that every strong wolf is not dangerous or criminally inclined, like the ones from her previous pack.  We see Maggie grow alot in this book and deal with her inner demons.

Erik and Maggie both know that they are a mated pair from the moment that they meet but Maggie talks Eric into waiting until she can get to know him before they act on attraction to each other.  I really liked that aspect of the story because they get to know each other as people and not just as wolves.

We also get to spend a little more time with TJ, the younger brother of the pack's Alpha, and we get to meet another young male member of the pack, Jared.  Both of these young men grow thru the book also and are funny characters in themselves since they both consider themselves "ladies" men.

The "games" are just that, a werewolf version of Olympic games.  There are other packs involved and Maggie must learn to deal with other wolves, which is another aspect of the story.

Overall I really liked this book, the only thing I would have liked to read more of would have been to have more of Erik's backstory as we got quite a bit of Maggie's.

Flashback Sunday- To The Edge By Cindy Gerard

So in continuing with my theme of Flashback Sunday, here is another book that I missed the first time around and just finished this week.

Author:            Cindy Gerard

Genre:              Romantic Suspense

Purchase:       To the Edge (The Bodyguards, Book 1)

Excerpt

From the Author:

Nolan Garrett’s on a roll. For three months he’s managed to sustain a string of booze-soaked days and mercifully dreamless nights, searching for a comfort zone at the bottom of the barrel. Just when he thinks he’s getting close, life takes a turn for the worse and dumps him back into the thick of things.

He’s found a job. Or rather a job has found him.

Job title: Bodyguard.

Objective: Keep Jillian Kincaid, the only child of one of the richest men in Palm Beach, Florida, alive.

Prospects: Not good for this ex-army Ranger who’s more interested in working on his own not-quite-subconscious death wish.

Jillian Kincaid doesn’t have a death wish. She’s got a life wish – to carry on with the one she’s built on her own, disconnected from her father’s power and wealth. She’s used brains, savvy and in-your-face determination to carve out a career in the highly competitive television news industry. And she’ll be damned if she’ll let a couple of death threats take it all away from her when she’s on a fast track to a cable network anchor. Duck and run? Not in this lifetime.

Only this lifetime is growing shorter and shorter for Jillian as a sick, sinister predator stalks her with only one purpose in mind. To see her dead.

My Review:

Nolan Garrett is an Ex-Special Forces soldier who has come home after his service in Afghanistan/Iraq and is carrying a ton of guilt on his shoulders.  He feels guilt for the soldiers that never made it home that were under his command and also for some of the ones that made it home and are damaged.  So instead of trying to make up for it....he's feeling sorry for himself and is on a self destructive alcohol binge.  Lucky for him his family steps in and bascially hounds him until he agrees to go to work for the family business, E.D.E.N. Securities, Inc.  He agrees to take on a case of being a bodyguard for Jillian Kincaid.   Suddenly being responsible for someone else's safety makes Nolan take a good look at what has been going on in his life and he is finally able to start taking control again.  Basically this saves him from himself.

Jillian Kincaid is the daughter of one of the world's richest and most successful men.  She has spent her whole like not understanding her own family, her father is driven to success and has controlled a good portion of her life.   Her mother is somewhat cold and distant.  Jillian is finally out on her own and is resentful of anyone or anything trying to control her life, to say she didn't want a bodyguard is telling it lightly.  However, circumstances force her to have to face the facts that someone is trying to kill her and she has no choice but to give in to her father's demand that she have protection.  She too has issues from her past that need to be dealt with, a recently ended affair with a man who turned out to be married and a news story she is working on for a victim of a mugging that is taking a toll on both the victim and her.

Neither of these 2 people look at each other as friends much less in a romantic way at the beginning of the book.  Having to depend on each other though changes the way that they look at life and also the way that they look at each other.  This does have a very good mystery that is being solved, who wants Jillian dead and why.  The resolution of the mystery caught me completely by surprise.   I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes romantic suspense books.  This book is the first in the series of the Bodyguard series, there are 6 books total in the series.

Wolf Games- Vivian Arend- Contest

Vivian Arend is celebrating the One Year Anniversary of her Granite Lake Wolves series.  The first book, Wolf Signs was released by Samhain on March 24, 2009.  I too am celebrating an anniversary along with Vivian as Wolf Signs was the first Ebook that I purchased.  Congrats Vivian!

From Vivian Arend:

When I started reading romance ebooks I went into werewolf overload. It was like an addiction took me by storm—one shot and I was hooked—literally, my first ebook was a werewolf romance. I had read paranormal and fantasy before, but I think there are times and places in our lives that things happen for a reason, and having the wolves call to me was one of my special moments.

Like any addict, I feed my habit regularly—starting at Ellora’s Cave and then moving over to Samhain where I purchased every book that remotely mentioned werewolves. Slowly a group of common denominators began to emerge. The secretiveness in most groups. The clan loyalties and pack hierarchy.

And most of all, the soul mate. While having the hero repeat MINE in all caps or italics at regular intervals reduced me to hysterical giggles, the concept intrigued me. I’m a firm believer that there is such a thing as falling in love forever, with the right person, but I think it takes more than pre-fated chemicals to make a happily ever happy. More about that in a minute…

When I started writing I took my favorite parts of all the werewolf legends and tried to make a world uniquely my own. Since I also loved the ‘mind speak’ ability of many wolf books I’d read, I knew I had to have that element. That’s where the spark of inspiration for Wolf Signs came from. What if someone who was deaf could suddenly hear again? In a very special way?

Book two was about a hero who had grown up in the human world and now tried to balance his wolf reality with his human morals.

And book three? In Wolf Games both the hero and heroine know they are wolves. They know shortly after the start of the story they are mates, and they still wait to complete their mating. To me, the real love is shown in how hard Erik and Maggie work at their relationship in spite of knowing they belong together forever. As a married woman, that’s the kind of love I need to live out everyday.

I hope you enjoy Erik and Maggie’s love story, and you enjoy visiting the Granite Lake wolves as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.

Excerpt:

Erik caught sight of the women as they strolled down the boardwalk, one of them swaying from side to side. He laughed quietly. He’d have a set of slightly tipsy females to keep an eye on while they soaked. The youth from his pack traveling with him played off to the left in the cold pool section of the natural hot springs. Splashing and hooting and the sounds of carrying-on filled the air.

Wolves—they were such children.

He waded through the water toward the deck. The woman on the right looked familiar. Petite, blonde, youthful features. If she’d been hugely pregnant he would have sworn it was Missy, the Omega for his pack, although she wasn’t the kind to get falling-down drunk. It appeared he was about to meet his reason for driving south sooner than expected. It had to be Maggie weaving toward him.

He watched with growing concern as the women’s forward motion slowed. It wasn’t just a tipsy ramble anymore, something seemed wrong. Erik grabbed the edge of the railing, wondering if he should offer assistance.

“Oh shit, help, someone. Damn it. Help.” The brunette waved her arms, the frantic motions drawing his attention to the other woman as she wavered on unsteady limbs. He leapt out of the water, droplets spraying from his body to soak the worn boards underfoot. Long strides carried him down the boardwalk just in time to be able to catch the blonde before she collapsed.

His world shifted three feet to the left.

Shocks—like small electrical connections—registered where their bodies touched. Trickles shot through his limbs and up his spine. Tingling. Snapping. Oh hello, it felt completely and wonderfully right.

“Thanks—she’s been getting dizzy and I didn’t want her to collapse and hurt herself.” The dark-haired woman kept rambling, but the entire focus of Erik’s attention centered on the beautiful female he held in his arms. He turned and walked back to the water, taking the steps while still cradling her close.

“What the hell are you doing? She’s passed out. She needs to recover and—” The friend followed him down into the pool, tugging at his elbow.

“—stay warm. Don’t worry, I’ve got her.” Erik had no intention of letting her go. Ever. But that probably wasn’t what this other woman wanted to hear. He settled on one of the submerged benches scattered through the natural pool and rearranged his mate in his arms, her head resting on his chest. The sensation of her cheek on his bare skin made his whole body react.

His mate.

Flashback Sunday- Hunter's Moon

So I wanted to start something new by reviewing a book every Sunday that is at least 5 years old.  It will be a book that is new to me, that I missed the first time around.

Author:           C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp

Genre:             Paranormal Romance

Purchase:       Hunter's Moon (Tales of the Sazi, Book 1)

Back Cover Blurb:

She needs a White Knight

Sue Quentin has reached the end of her rope- she's desperate and there's only one way out: death.  Her plan doesn't include falling for Tony, the mysterious hit man she hires.  He listens when she speaks and somehow convinces her that maybe her problems aren't entirely insurmountable.  He even thinks her little potbelly is sexy.  So what if he's a werewolf- everyone has flaws!

Sue enjoys being coddled by Tony, and for his part, tony likes the way Sue moans when he touches her.  She begins to think that she and Tony might have a shot at a future together, despite his unorthodox profession....and even though she doesn't know his real name.

But when Tony's enemies- not all of whom are fully human- decide Sue makes a perfect target, will Tony risk letting his darker side out during the day to save her?

My Review:

This was an unusual book.  I enjoyed it for many reasons, one of them being that finally someone wrote a book where the heroine is not a size 6 Barbie but is a real sized woman with real hair issues.

Sue Quentin, a size 14 woman, is at a point where she thinks the only thing left she can do to get peace in her life, is to die.  She doesn't want to kill herself because she doesn't think that she can do it right, so she decides to hire the job done.  She manages to get in touch with a young hit man, who turns out to be a teenage psycho, who in turn recommends that she get in touch with Tony Giodone, a hit man at the prime of his game.  She meets with Tony and things  become complicated.

Tony Giodone has spent his whole life working for "The Family", the organized crime family in town.  He also has a secret, one year ago he was going after a "target" that backfired on him when she didn't die and in fact came after him and almost killed him.  After he managed to survive he noticed that things had changed in his life, he could smell emotions and at some point realizes that he has become a werewolf.  His second nature doesn't interfere with his lifestyle so he continues as a hitman.

Tony realizes upon meeting Sue that he can't kill her, at least not right away if at all.  Turns out that Sue had recently won the Mega Millions Lottery in their area, to the tune of 238 Million dollars and her picture had been plastered all over the press.  He does tell her that if she is sure she wants him to go thru with it that he would be willing to consider it a year in the future.  Tony is also highly attracted to Sue and the way she smells.  He convinces her to confide her story to him, which she agrees to do in a more private setting.  They proceed to go to Tony's hotel, where Sue confides that her family is manipulative and driving her crazy and where Tony looses control and becomes a werewolf in front of Sue.  Instead of being scared, Sue becomes more attracted to Tony than before and they become lovers.  We find out that when Sue was a child she had seen a werewolf in the forest.

Both characters in this book have similiar problems.  Neither is willing to deal with certain issues in their lives.  Sue has no backbone and knows it, she does however begin to get therapy during the book so that she becomes more able to deal with issues.  Tony has been a werewolf for over a year and has not bothered to find out anything about his transformation or if there is any kind of heirachy in his new existence.

The suspense element in this book is handled very well.  Things are well explained and any necessary background is dealt with.  The supernatural element is addressed in detail near the end of the book and Tony finally deals with what it means to be a werewolf.  This is the start of a series and I really look forward to reading the next book, Moon's Web (Tales of the Sazi, Book 2).

No Mercy

Author:            Lori Armstrong

Genre:              Mystery/Suspense

Purchase:       No Mercy: A Mystery

From the Author:

Mercy Gunderson is a straight shooter with a hard edge. On medical leave from the Army, she returns home to South Dakota, which isn’t much safer for her than Iraq. Arriving just after the death of her father, it is up to Mercy to decide what to do with the family ranch. Trying to deal with her irresponsible sister and nephew and feeling guilty that she didn’t make it home soon enough to see her father one last time; Mercy is suddenly pulled into the local community when the body of a Native American boy is found on her land. But nobody seems to be doing anything about it, especially not the local law enforcement.

When tragedy strikes again, Mercy is ready to throw all her energy into her own investigation, and she’s out for revenge. As she digs up the truth behind the shocking crimes, Mercy uncovers dark and dangerous secrets and must race to stop a killer before everything she’s fought for is destroyed forever.

My Review:

The main character, Mercy Gunderson, is a very complex woman.  She has been in the army for the last 20 years and has only come home to South Dakota on the occasional leave.  Her family never really knew what she did in the army because it has been a secret, she was an army sniper.  Her family thought she drove convoy trucks.  Throughout most of the book you realize that Mercy is dealing with a truck load of guilt and with feelings of not belonging anywhere.  Her family owns the largest or at least one of the largest cattle ranches in South Dakota but she has been haunted by horrible memories of her mother's death (she feels responsible for this event) and the death of her sister's childhood friend (somehow she feels guilty for this too).  Now she has added missing her father's final days and death to her list of things to feel guilty about, never mind that she herself was in the hospital suffering from an injury that would end her military career.

While Mercy is trying to come to grips with the responsibility of either keeping or selling her family's ranch and watching over her fragile sister and nephew, things start to go wrong.  A Lakota boy is found dead on their ranch and no one seems to know why he is dead or if it was an accident or a murder.  Things are complicated in that the former sheriff was Mercy's dad and his replacement is not exactly living up to what people expect.  The new sheriff, Dawson, is a former marine and was hand picked by Mercy's dad, but she doesn't understand why her dad picked him and there is some tension at the beginning.  It also doesn't help that Mercy is very attracted to him on a physical level, but there is no trust.  One thing leads to another and Mercy ends up agreeing to investigate the young man's death, only to have tragedy strike her family again.

There are 2 more deaths that take place during Mercy's investigation into what is going wrong in her part of South Dakota.  She also ends up finding out about some of her family's secrets and about dealing with situations and relationships that she has run away from all of her life.  She finally also starts to respect Dawson and they begin to act on their mutual attraction.

I did not see the resolution of the mystery and murders that took place coming.  I was leaning towards one character in the book being resposible for everything, only to find out that there was more involved and part of it dealt with Mercy's family's past.  At the end, Mercy has finally come to terms with herself, the end of her military career, and feels that she is finally home.

I truely enjoyed reading this book.  I do feel that I need to state that Ms. Armstrong did a very fine job in her description of South Dakota and with the situation on the reservations.  She has written another series of books, The Julie Collins series, that also deals with aspects of how America continues to deal with and make mistakes with the Native Tribes.  There is a rape that takes place in this book, however, it is mostly discussed as something in the past and it takes place off scene.

I would highly recommend this book to lovers of mystery and strong alpha type women.

Born To Be Wild

Author:         Christine Warren

Genre:           Paranormal Romance

Format:        Print and Ebook

Purchase:    Born To Be Wild (The Others)

From the Publisher:

Josie Barrett brings out the animal in men. Literally. As the local veterinarian in a town that’s approximately seventy percent Others—mostly shapeshifters—Josie deals with beastly situations all the time. It’s practically part of her job description. But when the werewolves of Stone Creek, Oregon, start turning downright feral, Josie smells a rat—among other, more dangerous critter.

Teaming up with the ferociously sexy Eli Pace, a full-time sheriff and part-time were-lion, Josie tries to contain the shapeshifting problem before it spreads like a virus. But when more shifters get infected—and stuck in their animal forms—the fur really begins to fly. Josie and Eli have to find the cause, fast, before the whole town goes to the dogs. But first, they have to wrestle with a few animal urges of their own.

My Review:

This is the 9th full book in "The Others" series by Ms. Warren.  The heroine in this book is Josie Barrett, the veterinarian, is an interesting character.  She has been pretty much focused on one thing and one thing only since she has been a small child, becoming a veterinarian and taking over her dad's practice.  She really hasn't had much of a life outside of that goal.  She has now reached the goal and is beginning to realize that she is missing a major relationship in her life, she hasn't had a date in quite some time and realizes that she is lonely.  The thing is that she is not sure what she is going to do about that.  She has known about the existence of  the "Others" since she was a small child, it's the open secret of her town.  She has also known Eli Pace, the sheriff, for 3 years and has known that he is a shifter of some kind, just not which brand.  It isn't until he brings an injured lupine to her clinic that she suddenly sees him in a different light.

Eli Pace is the town sheriff and he is also a lion shifter.  He brings an injured lupine to Josie's veterinary clinic due to an emergency, the town Dr. is on vacation and she is his only hope. While he is at her clinic, he suddenly realizes that Josie is his mate.  However, he is torn as to what he should do as he has a professional responsibility to keep things on a business basis.  Pretty soon he decides that there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to have both a professional relationship and a personal, more intimate relationship with Josie and sets about to do that.  Eli is described pretty much as perfect male specimen.  He is tall, strong and very attractive.  The only thing that I felt was missing between the heroine and hero was some of the "heat" that the other books in the series had.  Otherwise the romance is developed in a nice pace.

The shifters in the community have an "unseen" enemy who is conducting some kind of test on their abilities as "Others", testing to see if their strengths and weaknesses can be identified and possibly exploited.  It isn't until near the end of the book that you understand entirely who the enemy is and what is at stake.  I personally didn't have a problem with who the enemy is and how it is revealed and handled.  Like the rest of the books in the series there is a happy ending for our couple.

My Rating:  4 out of 5 Crowns
